  1. OK, I just had my second mic fail on the KG-1000G unit that I've had for about 1 year now, and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue since I believe it is a "thing". I use this radio a lot - it is mounted in my Jeep and it is used all day long for a couple of days every third weekend or so. My first mic failed after about three months of such use. My replacement mic just failed this past weekend (incredibly frustrating when on a group trip and I lose primary comms!). Luckily I had a couple of backup HTs, but I digress....] The "failure" seems to manifest itself in the PTT button losing its tactile feedback (it becomes difficult to tell whether it is being "pushed" just by feel, if that makes any sense). This physical failure is accompanied by a deeply attenuated transmission - where people report that my voice has suddenly become "washed out" or "drowned out" by static. This is exactly what happened the first time, and after checking everything about my install (including replacing antenna and cable) I verified it was the mic. A replacement mic fixed the problem. I am going to reach out to Buytwowayradios today to hopefully discuss this issue, but since I have had it happen to me twice, I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue? I LOVE this radio, but this mic problem needs a permanent fix! Brent

Another idea. Find a farmer with a high hill. See if he would lease you a spot for a tower and small utility building. If you could get a group together to share the expense it wouldn't be too bad. You might also offer to provide a public service to the community during severe weather etc. Sometimes folks will be willing to donate a little towards something like that. If the local sad hams are a bunch of a-holes I'd get real creative and make something happen.

  3. You may have to save the downloaded from the radio to update your file then it should be what you changed!

Some guy **ahem** did a review on this radio recently. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Jqff37U58o&t=1262s Some of you might find it helpful when making the decision to buy this radio. I bought one a while back, and I'm quite pleased with it. Not top of the line by any means, but a lot of great features for the price.

  6. Then it seems you are one of the few lucky ones. When you get the whole thing reassembled do one more scan using the radio the battery replacer is installed on. If nothing is noticed you should be good to go.

  8. It is very simple: don't like nets, don't participate. For example, I do not like nets with check-ins, so I do not go there and do not check in.

  9. No.. Although many hams do slum on GMRS in many areas, the main use for GMRS is utilitarian communication - ie; when off-roading and in a group, hiking, traveling with multiple vehicles, etc. Sadly, it sounds like in your area many of the rag-chewers have taken over.. But once you get out of reach of their basements, like out adventuring in the desert or mountains, all their noise goes away. I run a repeater, partially run another repeater which is one of the largest/most used in Southern California, and run a group - not only am i not a ham, most in the group are not hams either.

  10. If you transmit on a GMRS radio without a GMRS license you will be fined $250,000 and/or go to prison If you transmit on GMRS frequencies on a UV-5R you will be fined $250,000 and/or go to prison You can legally use a UV-5R on GMRS frequencies if you just lower the power level.. If you don't, you will be fined $250,000 and/or go to prison You don't need a GMRS license to use a GMRS radio if you put it on low-power and use the FRS only channels. If you talk a non-licensed person on GMRS "the FCC will come after you" (this one was JUST posed on this forum last week!)

    Wouxun base station

I have learned that anyone that calls something "junk", or worse, "cheap Chinese junk!!" without ever even using the device is an idiot, and should be ignored. I have several Wouxun radios, including multiple KG1000Gs, and I have many friends that also have them. The radios aren't perfect, and there is always a chance of getting a dud, but assuming you purchase it from BuyTwoWayRadio, they have great support and will always take care of you. The KG1000G is my favorite high-power Part 95 mobile radio, I dont care what the "expert" radio-bigots say.

  12. Even moisture in the air causes attenuation of UHF signals.

  13. I'm enjoying this thread! Personally I have a small solar/battery system (and my fiancee just bought her own). We field-tested it for a week this summer and were able to comfortably power a base station, several portables, and several cell phones. That's in addition to a decent amount of stored food, propane, water, individual equipment, and the means to protect all of it. We went the P25 route for our private communications. AES is standardized across manufacturers so it's not a problem for subgroups to choose different equipment. Our gear is all EF Johnson and Motorola but integrating Kenwood, Tait, Harris, or BK gear is trivial. Subgroups get their own keyset that isn't shared beyond that group, along with a shared keyset for interoperability. A nice side benefit of this is that it forces you to get organized before needing to use the equipment for real. Rather than relying on fixed repeaters, I have a simplex repeater that can operate off any of my portables. It will pass encrypted traffic and is small and light enough to carry and drop off anywhere. I need to set up a second unit and work on an extended battery. Something else we've implemented is TMS. A quarter-second data burst can convey complex information while being nearly impossible to DF, and it seems to get out a bit better than voice. Between encryption, data, low power, transmitting while mobile, and terrain masking, it's not too hard to be miles ahead of 99% of potential adversaries.
