Dude asks about hearing Morse code on GMRS. 23 hours later an argument breaks out on the same thread about who pulls cable for HP.

    New base for a NFG.

I got my 50FT of LMR400, pre-cut with ends on it from Amazon.. Was delivered the next morning.

I understand. In my area LEO and Fire all still use VHF and I listen on the 935G. A few small towns are using UHF in the 460's. Unfortunately LA county is using UHF that we can't get on the 935G. Good luck.

If I remember correctly the city of Santa Clarita doesn't have a police department. They have a Los Angelas County Sheriff's Department substation there, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station. If it is still that way then their radios are above 480.0000 MHz which puts them out of the range of the KG-935G Plus. Hopefully someone can give you a more up to date answer. The KG-935G Plus is a fun radio either way.

You should be able to listen to your emergency frequencies as long as they are within the freq-range that the 935 can pick up, and are analog signals.

  8. I am dead-center in the path of the storm... Extreme rain and hazardous squalls were predicted to arrive beginning at 4am... it is now almost 1PM and we got some light drizzle that stopped a few hours ago, and I think we had a couple of wind-gusts that might have topped 3-4mph... The local news is really having a rough time finding anything to scare us with but God bless them, they're trying.

  9. Which desert? I know that Joshua Tree/29 Palms area was getting heavy rain Fri/Sat, but not directly related to Hillary... I'm in the IE and so far all the predictions of death & destruction that were supposed to have begun 6 or 7 hours ago have amounted to nothing more than a little light drizzle (which stopped 2 hours ago) with 0 wind.

  10. Unfortunately these two sentences pass along bad information. I’ll take them separately: Yes, it’s generally best to use feedline that matches the impedance of the radio, but swapping a minor impedance mismatch has fewer disadvantages than using RG-58 or 58x which has incredibly high attenuation at GMRS frequencies. Using 75 ohm feedline with a 50 ohm radio simply means that you start with a theoretical SWR of 1.5. That’s not terrible and PL-259 connectors are available for both of the common 75 ohm cables. So are adapters. RG-11 attenuates RF in the 400 MHz range at the rate of 3.5 dB per 100 feet. That’s a little more than half of your power lost in the cable. RG-58 attenuates RF in the 400 MHz range at the rate of 11.2 dB. That’s more than 90% of your power lost. I wouldn’t use RG-58 for GMRS feedline for anything longer than 10 feet. https://www.w4rp.com/ref/coax.html

I did for a while. To be honest with my answer, as you requested, which, by the way, I always am, I had a pair if Midland handhelds, GTX 1000s, I think. I found them to be junk. They went to Goodwill. I have since moved on to better radios.

Probably a dozen. Nearly everyone I know who gets radios for their kids or themselves (but are not hams) goes to the nearest sporting goods store or Walmart and buys a pair of Midland or Motorola (or no-name) radios in the heat sealed blister pegboard packs. There are four of us who graduated to Garmin for the GPS, which we buy at Cabelas. I probably have four of the bubble pack radios in my rocket trailer now that people have donated. I have yet to see someone show up with a Wouxun, but I do see a few UV5R radios that folks order from Amazon. I also see people buying blister packs at truck stops. I would guess that those are the ones that end up on construction sites. What is it you think we would be less than honest about?

    Tropical Storm Warning

If you are in Southern California you can hear info on the tropical storm coming on the NOAA channels. A first for California. I am picking up info at 162.400 and 162.475 north of Santa Barbara.

You are correct, SCV has Sheriff's Department. I just want to be informed of what's happening around my surroundings. when I hear sirens or see a helicopter flying around my area.

  23. You should be able to here from the repeater on your UV-5R, no tone needed to listen. It may be your radios are to close to eachother though. desensing can happen when radios are close to eachother causing one not to receive transmissions. Try moving them further apart like fifty feet or so.

  24. Actually there’s nothing wrong with you transmitting to the repeater and listening on your UV5R. It’s totally within the rules and if anyone tells you otherwise they’re full of it. But transmitting on one radio and listening on another right next to it doesn’t always work because the receiving radio “desenses”, which means it is swamped by the stronger signal and fails to reproduce it. That’s especially true for inexpensive radios.

    Tropical Storm Warning

please remember that there is no such thing as a "small hurricane" and that even "only" a tropical storm can be very dangerous, so don't let your guard down (trust this Floridian who weathered 8 hurricanes and too many storms to count!). Also, please remember that most people die *after* the storms. And we all know that anything named "Hillary" is infinitely evil, right? Good luck and God Bless.

I agree with the first part of your post but I believe an open repeater means the owner is inviting others to use it. You will know if it’s open or not by it being listed that way. Also why does a squelch tail or roger beep mean it’s an open repeater?

  27. The kind of short version is we share a well. The booster pump and reservoir tank are closer to my house. The tank is 10 feet lower than my house and 20 above his. Over the last 6 years we have experienced at least 15 power outages with several of them being multiple days long with the longest being 5 days. The pump house with it's own electric meter is closer to me. With a transfer switch we can run the well and booster pump on a generator. The 5 day outage was accompanied by 6 feet of snow over a week which made snow shoeing up and down the hill the only method of travel. We will run the generator for the well and booster pumps on a schedule and use radios for coordination. He was using one of my radios. Now he has his own. Last week we lost power three times for 3-4 hours at a time. We have started turning on our radios when we lose power just in case.

  29. The DILA 550 repeater is an open repeater thus doesn't care what language is inputed into it. Whatever goes in should come out the same.
