  2. No, I just know that "some people's" entire hobby revolves around finding strange men talk with, and I think Grindr is a great way for them to do that. I'm just looking out for them.

I'm new to GMRS as well, located in Fort Mill/Indian Land. Reading the manual for my radio tonight.

  4. Correct. If the tone type is none, then regardless of a tone code being present, it will not enable tone squelch. Same for DCS.

  5. It's very easy to program a repeater on a GMRS radio vs a ham radio. I always like to get started by learning how to program on the radio so I understand how it works, then when I want to program a lot of repeaters, I'll use CHIRP. Programming a repeater on a GMRS radio literally requires only ONE entry: Just select the correct repeater channel, and enter the TX/Encode CTCSS/DCS tone, and you're done. Optionally, when your ready to get fancy, you can enter the RX/Decode tone.

  6. Agreed, but without knowing exactly what you’re doing it’s impossible to help.

    GMRS Radio Funnies

When I lived in an apartment years ago I had my Kenwood Ham HT modified. That allowed the reception of the common 900MHz cordless phones at the time. I picked various phone conversations but it wasn’t any good. Just about every one in range was from the Middle East speaking their native language. Rather pointless and boring to try scanning anymore.

  8. @WRXB215 Beautiful, thanks for confirming/the concise answers. I'm going to take one of the HT's up on the roof this weekend (should get me closer to 30' up) and I may even try the UT-72G on a baking sheet. I'll check out that video above, thanks for the link, I'm sure they're close enough I can fumble through it. BTW, anyone else convinced NotA's a Grindr shareholder?!

  9. Had the same exact problem with an Antron 50 Amp in my garage.. House was new so i was able to get the contractor over to check things out with the Power Panel.. The electrician said exactly what LSCOTT said and suggested i change the breaker to a non GFI Breaker.. Electrician would not do it because of building codes, but i swapped it out in 30 seconds.. No more tripped breakers.

    20W vs 50W

But you can drive your car to a higher location sometimes or one with better line of sight. Really height is "might" as the saying goes. Elevation and line of sight make the most difference. That said extra power on tap is not a bad thing. If you can afford it get the KG-1000Gplus. Great radio.

  11. Wide/Narrow has nothing to do with it because that would not prevent them from transmitting/hearing each other. The issue is he is trying to transmit in frequency/VFO mode, which you cannot do on UV-5G radios.. Assuming there are no incorrect tones, putting the radio in channel/MR mode and set the correct GMRS "channel" should make everything work.

  12. On the UV-5G, Channel 20 is equivalent to channel 20 - try putting them on channel 20, get all the radios at least 50 feet apart, and try again.

  13. Someone mention about this issue when one radio is using wide band and the other narrow band check it out and let us know.

  14. My MTX575 is mounted under the drivers seat of my 4Runner. The Midland “Ghost” is mounted in the roof, at rear. Works excellent. We used an extension to give the Midland mic a plug-in on the dash. Under the passenger seat is the Wilson WeBoost, with its matching antenna across from the Midland, in the roof. I picked up a Motorola 5000 series mobile (40w) with the plan to install it, but I’m not sure where I’d mount the head, or if I have time to mess with it right now.

  15. In actual testing, compared to the larger MXTA26, the ghost antenna performs VERY well.. Surprisingly well... IF you can mount it in a good location. If any part of the ghost antenna is being blocked by parts of the truck, it works terribly.. Basically, if you can mount it on the center of the roof, its great but anywhere else, not so much.

    Jacksonville N.C. GMRS

Are there any GMRS users in the Jacksonville, N.C. area that would be kind enough to help this newbie out? I realize there isn't many repeaters in this area but could use some direction in at least getting a contact in this area. So far I've got nothing. Starting to wonder if it's useless to try GMRS in this area. Any help appreciated.
