What is the purpose of GMRS channels 8-14?
AndyOnTheRadio and 3 others reacted to WRYC373 for a topic
Short answer its to allow full compatibility with frs. Those channels were originally FRS only pre 2017. Yes if operating a gmrs radio you need to by rule announce the same as any other channel. Those channels if you look at frequencies are close to repeater inputs and the reason why power is low is to prevent any interference on the repeater inputs.4 points -
Input Tone? Output Tone? Am confused.

Well mine doesn't look so impressive from a distance. It's only when you get close and look underneath that you see the armor bits and sway bar disconnects and LT-E tires, etc. My kid thinks I should get a decal for the hood: "Curbicon". So you can go to the mall with CONfidence! (Que up the "Honest Jeep Commercial". Look it up.)3 points

Radioddity DB25-G Constant hissing
WRXB215 and 2 others reacted to SteveShannon for a question
Turn on squelch. It’s purpose is to mute the radio unless certain conditions are met: Carrier squelch mutes the radio unless a threshold signal strength is exceeded.3 points -
I'll preface this by saying I'm no expert. But I have dealt with alternator whine on my radios. The approach that fixed it for me is a homebrew inline filter between the battery and the radio. Here's the link to the filter I built. It looks very similar to the IBNF30 you bought. https://www.sanantoniohams.org/Tips/whine.htm But, since you say you tried the filter and it didn't work, I would suspect a ground loop. This can happen when two devices are grounded to different places of the vehicle. And in your case, connecting the Midland to the car stereo with a cable introduces yet another ground path. Without knowing what your wiring setup is, I'm guessing. Perhaps you could try to run the Midland off a battery that is completely isolated from the car's electrical system and see if that has an effect. If so, grounding the Midland to the same place the car radio is grounded to might help. Additionally, because the cable connecting the Midland to the car radio introduces a direct ground connection between them, an audio isolation transformer might help. Something like this. It completely breaks the electrical connection but it passes audio. https://www.connection.com/product/c2g-stereo-audio-isolation-transformer-3.5mm-m-f-black-4in/40000/13364621 Bottom line, do some research on ground loops in car audio systems. If I were a betting man I would bet this is the issue.2 points

Alternator whine with a twist
WRUU653 and one other reacted to SteveShannon for a question
I do not connect my two-way radio to the car radio. I am curious if you hear the whine when the cable is unplugged from your car radio input. What is the impedance at both ends of the connection? Typically speaker level outputs should not be connected to line level inputs. Line outputs or earphone level outputs are better matched.2 points -
Thanks. Just trying to figure out which term applies to opening the receiver. It would help if Wouxun's manual employed the same terminology as their software, at least. As the radio comes from the factory there is nothing set for either decode or encode for any of the channels, so basically the radio is good for simplex, but not for repeaters (which makes sense). I'm going to go with enc to send the tone and see if that works. Then I can get in on all the conversations about the weather, etc.2 points

I get the trouble taco out from time to time up here in New England. 2017 taco, sport (couldn’t find an off road any where in the US when buying) 33s, 2inch lift, full protection underneath. We run on ch16. Wicked good times up here in New England for wheeling, cmon snow let’s go all ready. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points -
How to pull broken pin in SMA connector?
WRXB215 reacted to SteveShannon for a question
It might be rough on the radio but the only way I can think of would be inertia. Tap the antenna jack with a plastic mallet and check often to see if it’s working its way out. Once it’s poking out slightly maybe you can pull it out.1 point -
Alternator whine with a twist
Kyler reacted to SteveShannon for a question
Your phone output goes to earphones or an amplified speaker, devices which expect low levels, not directly to a speaker. A speaker output typically drives a 4-16 ohm load (the speaker). If your radio has a headphone output, that would match your car radio input better.1 point -

@OffRoaderX Love the photos! I have seen you guys on YT wheeling also. Would love to come out sometime and catch a trail or two with you guys. @bd348 Hey I love seeing rigs no matter what. I like seeing ideas and you guys personalities in your rigs. I find it interesting. @NHPLAY I am wanting some snow myself. It would be my first time in my Jeep playing in snow. Can not wait! Post a couple pics my friend. Would like to see your ride.1 point -
Reverse cross-patch?
WRXB215 reacted to Radioguy7268 for a topic
If I follow what you're asking, you would have radio users on one system (non-GMRS) with the ability to generate traffic on a GMRS repeater. It's not going to be legal. If you end up relaying their voice traffic from this 'private' system over to an analog GMRS repeater, I also question how 'private' the system would remain. You would be basically be wiretapping your own private system, and then broadcasting the audio over an open analog channel.1 point -
@H8SPVMT Love the water crossing photos! I haven't gotten to do a good water crossing yet. Looking forward to it.1 point

Jeep JT pickup, Sport model, stock height, 32" LT-E all-terrain tires, various control arm and shock skids, aluminum engine and transfer case skids, hitch skid, bed skids, the wider Mopar HD rock rails with step assist, Apex Autolynx sway bar disconnects, Bilstein 5100 shocks, Timbren SES rear bump stops due to bed cap and towing hitch weight, Timbren offroad front bump stops (not yet installed), bed cap, Midland 275 GMRS behind the dash under the steering wheel, 1/4 wave mag mount on the hood on a sticky plate, upgraded coax, Garmin Inreach Mini 2. We tow a hard-sided popup and get decent fuel mileage as we cross the country from the midwest to get anywhere interesting. Did some Ouray and Moab, plus a bit of VA out east. With the engine/transfer case skids sticking down a bit, and no lift, it can scrape a little on two track. On the other hand, it's awesome for carving up twisty mountain roads. Like many others here, I have to get my family to and from some pretty distant places, so I can't take "might break something" risks. But a single trip blew the stock front shocks, and the skids got some scrapes, so I'm not totally babying it either. I used the InReach a few times just to update the family while they're back home or in camp. I used GMRS once while they were in the trailer a few miles away with a mountain ridge between us. Made a thread here about how the signal was probably going along the valley, bouncing off the mountain at the end, then up the next valley to the trailer. I had the 1/4 wave on the Jeep, the family had a half wave on the handheld in the trailer. Heard some groups on GMRS while on the trails out west. Heard some locals in various areas during cross-country travel. GMRS is out there in rural America, usually being used w/o call signs.1 point

I’m not sure if I follow. I’m not going to speculate about the legality without fully understanding what you’re describing. It sounds like you want your friends to use GMRS handheld or mobile radios to talk to an GMRS repeater which is patched to another, more private system of some sort. What is that “more private system?” A diagram would be helpful.1 point -

Sorry, I don't agree. He simply made a joke about the thread title. His joke was funny, and not offensive. Your response however, was, in calling someone a DICK. I clicked on the thread expecting it to be about someone other people on the forum might know, perhaps asking if anyone had heard from Terry, or maybe if anyone thought a product or service someone named Terry offered was worthwhile, or maybe letting people know Terry had passed away. Nope, just a post asking a question about a radio. Good question, bad thread title, which I am sure was not intentional on your part. Thread titles are used so people know what the thread is about. Calling someone a DICK for making a joke about a thread title that doesn't come close to describing what the thread was about is an emotional knee-jerk reaction. Maybe take a second to breathe and rethink. ONce again, I believe your mis-named thread was not intentional, but it did nothing to tell anyone what your thread was about, hence the joke.1 point
