WRHS218 and 3 others reacted to SteveShannon for a question
Look, I had the same problem understanding your question that they did, so I simply ignored all the bullshit about radios and antennas and answered your hearing aid question (or at least what I interpreted as the question.) A wise person once told me "If you're not getting the answers you want, maybe look at how you asked the question." You included a bunch of confusing bullshit, whether as an attempt to be funny or perhaps you thought we would understand some analogy. You removed your antenna and inserted the symbolic 1500 foot mountain between you and us and now you’re upset that we cannot hear you. Don't take it out on this forum because you posted a bizarre unintelligible plea for help.4 points -
Well, with all of this super advanced technical information that has been bestowed upon me, I have decided to leave my Roger Beep in a state of perpetual WTF. Thanks for all of your opinions3 points

@mitzvah your original post was random and not a cohesive train of thought. A bit of fun was had at your expense. I recommend you try reading your own post before posting it. This isn’t the first time people didn’t know what you were trying to say. Moving on from that @SteveShannon I think has some good advice for the hearing issue which must be frustrating. Two things I wish the radio companies would do. The first one is practical. Make the Roger Beep Off/On feature a "per-channel" feature. In other words, you could set the Roger Beep to be on or off on each channel and choose which Roger Beep option, just as you do CTCSS tones. That way, you could have it "off" on repeaters that prohibit its use and on for simplex and other repeater channels, rather than the global Roger Beep settings that they all have, currently. The second is a vanity thing, but make nature's original Roger Beep, the squelch tail (.5 to .75 seconds of white noise) as one of the ending Roger Beep options.3 points
-
I guess I am a bit ornery, I will turn the Roger beep on just to trigger some people. I normally don't use the Roger beep but it doesn't bother me one way or the other.3 points
-
I have found that new users like the beep because it is a positive indication that the other party has stopped transmitting. The radios I hand out for family simplex all have the beep turned on. Radios I use for repeaters have the beep off. Either way, it's just not a big deal. Edit: Added "simplex" for clarification.3 points

Because it doesn’t make sense. It looks like two separate thoughts, with the only commonality being the 1500’ mountain. Maybe it makes sense to you, but you failed to explain what you are asking in a way that the rest of us can understand. Frankly, it looked like a drunk person late night posting. If you can explain what you’re saying maybe we can help. (1) “So to fellows we will call them #1 and #2 are in a flat desert and 10 miles apart. Both can TX and RX each other. #1 removed his antenna, he thinks he is TX but #2 can't hear anything. #2 tries to TX #1, but #1 does not hear anything. Now we add a 1500 ft tall mountain between them and #1 and #2 can't hear each other. RIGHT” (2) “So I wear hearing aids. The last pair cost me $5,000. plus I had to pay a $500 maintenance fee. They claimed they were making adjustments to my hearing aid, But there was a 1500 ft tall mountain between us. So I stopped paying the Maintenance fee, and darn the hearing aids stopped working. What do you guys think.”2 points -
Roger Beep
SteveShannon and one other reacted to nokones for a topic
Out of a gazillion mobile and portables radios I own, only one of my radios has the Roger Beep feature and that is my Midland MXT500 which the feature is not enabled. This radio is one of my loaner radios for my fellow radioless Jeep Creeps so they have trail comm on the runs. As for the my position on the Roger Beep, I don't care if someone use it or not, it's just another radio thing, like squelch tail, repeater kerchunk, MDC squawk, old LAPD Saber PT-T ID chirp, voting comparator control circuit status tone blurps, or plain ol' RF Static. Radios and radio systems are prone to emit noises. It's the nature of the beast, it is just part of it.2 points -

It seems there are countless people who lack any self awareness. Post a question to random strangers on an Internet forum, then criticize their answers. Similar to the guy on the thread about “linked repeaters” who seems to think his arrogant replies are winning the day. Reminds me of…..2 points

Pin a piece off paper with your tower info and little precut tear away tabs with your phone number at the local laundromat bulletin board… I hope this helps, good luck bro.2 points

Time will tell how the Bridgecom repeater holds up. So far we have not had any issues and we tested it by pushing it before opening it up to the public. It has handled everything we threw at it to include a high duty cycle. The repeater has been up and running for a year now.2 points

How to advertise available tower space?
SteveShannon reacted to WRKC935 for a topic
Don't know if he approached it from that angle,,,, but if they just told him 'good luck' something ain't right about it. I have seen damn few towers that some ham would pass on putting stuff on. Especially if the price was right. So I really question what's wrong with the site overall that would illicit that response.1 point -
Issues With Accessing Repeater
DeoVindice reacted to BoxCar for a question
Put the mag mount on a cookie sheet or 16 inch pizza pan and test again. Unless your antenna is specifically marked as a No Ground Plane required, it needs a ground plane as the ground plane is actually an integral part of the antenna's makeup.1 point -

What is your antenna mounted on in your office? You need to have it connected to a piece of metal as a ground plane for the antenna to work correctly.1 point

If someone is on they will let them know if they are not receiving, and people do radio checks, I guess it is more of an extra assurance. It also lets them know they are on the repeater channel since the tone we use is not shared by anyone's radio. We also provide coverage maps for up to 60mi for 5w handhelds, and so far from testing it's pretty dang accurate. I'm onboard with whatever makes the end user happy.1 point
-
Are you sure your radio is set to the correct channel for the repeater you are trying to reach?1 point
-
For what it's worth, the much-maligned, but still world-famous Baofeng UV-5R (and perhaps its variants) can be set up to transmit a customizable DTMF series of tones of up to 5 "digits" either on key-up, (BOT), after PTT release (EOT), or both. It can be set up by channel. It's much less annoying than the standard roger beep. I have two radios set up this way with EOT transmissions.1 point
-
We have a courtesy tone on the repeater here because we find it helps new users understand that they reached the repeater, and don't need to keep asking "Is anyone hearing me on the repeater?" Some users still have their roger beep on, so you get a double tone every now and then, but it's not a huge deal. This is because a lot of users also talk on simplex, and they like to have the beep on. If this was on more radios, that would definitely help our double beep "issue".1 point

As I said in my above post about losing my Firestik II on a Jeep run, I received my replacement Firestik II 5 Foot antenna a couple days ago and the early morning temps today were in the 80s so I made time to tune the new antenna. My spare antenna was only a 2 Foot Firestik II antenna. I was able to tune the new 5 foot antenna to 1.0:1 across the board. The meter needle did moved off of "0" but barely and it was not even close to "1.1:1. I have never seen a tune almost perfect like this before. Just for giggles, I rechecked the 2 Ft. Antenna and I was 1.2:1 to 1.3:1 across the board. On my next Jeep Trail Run, I'll use the 2 footer antenna on the trails and just use the 5 Foot antenna for highway use only.1 point

How to advertise available tower space?
WRZK593 reacted to SteveShannon for a topic
This sight (mygmrs.com) has a classified ads section for its premium members. I think everyone can see it, but only premium members can post ads.1 point -
You could always try Craigslist of course. After all, it's free. Since this is a commercial effort you might invest in some ads. I've noticed there are many regional GMRS Facebook groups, like this: https://www.facebook.com/groups/11269704740628881 point

I don't care either way. I recently signed on to a repeater. The owner requested that I disable my roger beep. He is gracious enough to open his repeater to all users. I am happy to abide by this simple request. I do find it odd that anyone would have a strong opinion about this, one way or another.1 point

This is good news. Stay safe. I saw a similar photo from the lake fire in Santa Ynez where the fire came right up to a radio tower fence. The fact that the tower was still there must have been due to the great work these fire fighters do.1 point

Lots of evacuations from this one, probably over 10,000 acres burned. We have 3 big fires going here now, the Airport Fire, the Line Fire, and the Bridge Fire. Our repeater site is down for the foreseeable future because the power is out. Fortunately no fatalities that I know of.1 point

dB difference = 10*log(p2/p1) 10*log(50/7.8) = 8.07dB 10*log(50/5) = 10dB At least that's how I understand it. And every 3dBi is a doubling.1 point

Smart people do. Smart people also understand that there’s a lot more to the science than meets the eye, that limited data and shallow assumptions are not the same as science, and that scientists must always be willing to admit that they don’t know what they don’t know.1 point -

How to advertise available tower space?
WRKC935 reacted to MidnightMan for a topic
I think yall are missing the point of the question here. I asked where I should advertise it. I did NOT ask for your opinions on the structure itself. And don't try to make the claim that what you're saying is relevant to my question. It's not. If someone sees the listing and doesn't like the setup, that's up to them to decide. But first the listing has to be up. That's what I'm asking. I will not market to some commercial company to try and have them build a tower. THAT WAS NOT THE QUESTION and wasn't even in the scope of this project whatsoever. Don't worry about the wind loading or configuration. That's completely irrelevant to the question. Unless YOU are an advertising agent, you simply don't need that info to answer my question. Please don't be thick in the head here. If you don't know, you don't know. Don't try and blow smoke up my ass all day to make yourself think you are being helpful.1 point -

WRUU653 reacted to SteveShannon for a question
If this is a serious question, and I think maybe it is, you should find an independent hearing aid center and ask them to diagnose your hearing aids. If they both stopped working it is possibly related to wax blockages in both. I assume you tried new batteries, but maybe that is a bad assumption and maybe you even have the new hearing aids that do not have replaceable batteries. If you get them fixed that’s great, but if not, Costco and other places have hearing aids for a much more reasonable price and don’t believe the marketing hype that says the difference in price is worth it. Look at Consumer Reports to see if they have published a review of hearing aids. Radio #1 guy needs to put the antenna back on. The second word in your story is correctly spelled “two”. You can click the three dots and edit your post.1 point -
We are using the Bridgecom UHF repeater for GMRS and haven't had any issues. Though we did buy it without the built in duplexer since we had a better duplexer on hand. Bridgecom will program it for you with what ever GMRS repeater channel and tones you want. Programming is pretty simple with their software.1 point

Looking for recommendations on mobile units/setups
WRUU653 reacted to SteveShannon for a topic
Respectfully, I disagree. Although using the cigarette lighter jack is convenient for very temporary use, that also constrains you to a radio that has lower RF output power. I would simply add PowerPoles to the power cable to make it easy to remove a radio and take it into the house.1 point -
There are MANY choices in a mobile radio that you have to consider, so it is difficult to make an actual recommendation on a specific rig. For mobile, of course, a good antenna, securely mounted, is needed. I would suggest a trunk lip mount if you don't want to go the permanent (hole!) mount, and to avoid the mag mounts. If the antenna is going to be mounted on the side of the vehicle, I would suggest the left side of the vehicle; being farther from tree branches at the curb, and kids' hands! As to the actual rig, in a mobile, the physical size and power level are important. Since most vehicles don't have much room for a radio you have to consider where and how to mount it. You also have to run DC power to the rig, and that should come from a heavy (10-12 gauge) cable from the battery. For low power (10-20 Watts) you might get away with using the 'cigarette lighter' socket on the vehicle, but much better/safer to go right to the battery no matter what the power level. Radios can vary from about 15 Watts up to the legal maximum of 50 Watts. For mobile use, something in the 20-40 Watt range would be ideal. With some you can vary the power as needed for distant and local contacts. You have much to consider; I would look at on-line reviews of radios from the popular makers, since you are not on the air yet to ask for local opinions! Some you-tube videos from the more popular posters can also be helpful. Some makers of mobile type radios to think about would be (in no particular order!) Wouxun, Midland, Radioddity, Anytone, Alinco, and Retivis.) Of course there are others too. Some models may be made by one maker, but carry different 'brand' names, which can confuse things a bit. Hope you get some other advice; good luck getting on the air.1 point

Eh. I ain't worried. The ISM band is filled up with so many LoRa devices they aren't just going to suddenly stop it. Meshtastic has continued to grow and be developed. There are a ton more devices on the market and we are now seeing MeshTastic devices ready to go without assembly. https://store.rokland.com/products/wismesh-pocket?srsltid=AfmBOopDuYyc38PNZ6uV2JIoHmiSzKw7670XSZsNnOQ2waQAdeyZL-001 point

That is the way it works. you need to have the radio off when plugging the USB cable in while the programming software is open. This goes for pretty much every hand held radio I have programmed and no matter what programming software I use. Glad that you figured things out.1 point
