Exactly. Since GMRS was always intended to be a Short range or Local radio service to begin with. Everyone's ambitions about trying to make Gmrs a nationwide thing would be better served if they just studied up and got their amateur radio license instead, then they would have Several avenues available to them to accomplish Nationwide comms.3 points -

1) Actually you can use a tablet or phone. As for tech savvy, if you can figure out tones for a repeater I think you can figure out Facebook or a group page. 2) When it comes to GMRS at present it isn’t. 3) Amateur radio certainly can do it legally, in part because it has the room for it. I understand the desire but I don’t think it’s essential to talk to my neighbors via radio from across the nation. A phone will suffice just fine. That’s what I do if I need to speak to a neighbor while I’m away. There are internet based radio like services as well. It doesn’t need to be or IMO even should be GMRS. .023 points -

Nope, not too geeky at all, and absolutely Correct. I've got 9 ISS contacts under my belt, so far. 5 from my FT991A and a Comet SBB5 antenna at 50 foot, and 4 contacts from my FT70 talkie with a Signal Stick antenna . Of course the ISS app helps with tracking it overhead.3 points -

Historically so, but side to side testing shows the current batch perform well and the Japanese brands remain the gold standard of perfection. In the field even experts rarely are able to discern the differences, only expensive sophisticated instrumentation consistently shows differences.3 points -

The cost is actually $25 for each program and an extra $15 for both Windows and Mac versions by contacting RT Systems at time of purchase. RT Systems does not charge sales tax, or at least I didn't get charged the few times I purchased from them. I haven't had a chance to mess with the KG-1000G CPS yet but the RT Systems CPS is easier to use for my Icom radios compared to the Icom CPS.2 points

My son who lives in Alaska carries one of those for bear protection. He loads it with Buffalo Bore hard-cast flat nose 320 grain .45 Colt magnum rounds. He also keeps it beside the bed, because nothing says "f*** you" like sending your engine block into orbit. Personally, I wouldn't choose a single-action, but he's a former national Mounted Pistol champion and he can work that action ridiculously fast. However, being armed won't keep someone from breaking into a car in a state as unfriendly to protection of self and property as California. The mopes aren't accustomed to thinking in terms of personal danger while committing a crime. The laws are much more homeowner-friendly where I live, so the miscreants are less likely to target a vehicle parked in front of a private property. They typically break into vehicles in parking lots in the city. I live on a dead-end driveway off a dead-end street in a town of 6,700 people. They probably figure (correctly) that I have every feature ranged. I have to be more careful if I'm leaving for a couple of days, although I have left power tools on the back deck while I was gone for more than a week and they weren't touched. In the city, I just pull the power head off and conceal it. I may also unscrew the antenna and toss it inside the car if I'm in a little more sketchy neighborhood. That's really about all I can do, so beyond that, I don't worry about it.2 points -
The home base antenna won't be going any higher, it's at 40' at the base of a 7.2dBi gain. The plan for the repeater antenna is to go from 40' to 80' and go from a Retevis 7.2dBi gain to a Comet CA712EFC 9.8Dbi gain antenna in the future trading up from M&P Hyperflex13 to 1/2" hardline.2 points

Maybe, but if you’re willing to incur $20,000 in legal fees and loss of that nice 1911 (and possibly prison time) to defend yourself after brandishing a firearm (or worse, shoot someone) to protect a $100 radio you’re not thinking very well. Plus, you’ve now broadcast in a public forum that you’re willing to use a firearm with less than self defense as the reason.2 points -

I actually had the one on the left, as a child. Mid-1960's I believe. Made by Mattel. The barrel retracted into the frame and the grip pivoted into the bottom to make a toy camera. Push down a small lever on the outside and the barrel extended and the grip folded out, as in the picture. I believe it fired roll caps.1 point

Well, I split the difference between collect and accumulate. I acquire. I do this by the simple means of impulse buying. When I was younger purchases had to be planned and saved for. These days I simply see it & buy it. Turns out I have "acquired" some of my favorite things that way. Now some could say impulse buying is simply giving into momentary lust. But, one of my favorite things I "acquired" do to lust (and at the time nothing more) I have been married to for 52 years.1 point

Radioddity GM-30 PLUS only hears 1 side of the conversation
AdmiralCochrane reacted to 73blazer for a question
Yeah somethings up likely something is misprogrammed. . How did you program the radios with the native software? Chirp? On the radio itself? I would start with, as @OffRoaderX mentioned, removing all receive tones. It sounds almost like there is competing receive tones like there is a DCS and CTCSS receive tone both programmed and the radio doesn't know which one to use, I've seen this on a Retivus radio before, they came with pre-programmed DCS receive tones (no idea why) I didn't notice, and allowed you to add a CTCSS tone and then you hear nothing. But the radiooddity may be switching back and forth between them. @WRXC445 Please pay no attention to the town drunk @Socalgmrs. Consider it the random mumbling of a drunk while defecating in front of your building. It's just another example of negative Nancy dissing radios he knows nothing about, I think he's dissed every brand on the market. Because he never says which Chinese GMRS radio he does prefer so we can all run out and get it so we no longer have to subject ourselves to these what he says are these worthless Midland,Radioddity, Baofang,Tidradio,Wouxun,Retivus,Btech,Rocky radios he hates so much. Oh wait, that pretty much just leaves illegal to use on GMRS Motorola or Icom or Kenwood .1 point -

My situation changed a little today. Yesterday, I built a J pole out of 1/2 inch copper pipe. Today, I tuned it and took it outside. With good line of sight and a Radioddity GM-30, I was able to reach a repeater about 30 miles away. The people on the other end had a bit of trouble understanding me, but they were able to understand my call sign. More power should make the problem go away. We'll see what happens when my base radio finally gets delivered. -Steve WRXU8611 point

you "hear a call from our repeater, no problem" - so, the radios are receiving the repeater, but then when someone replies, which is no different from "a call", you dont hear it? This makes no sense to me as explained - please elaborate, and remove the RX tone and tell us what happens.1 point -
Sadly in the L.A. Metro area thefts from vehicles is rampant. And they take anything that isn't nailed down. They may toss it later, but they are going to take it. My particular vehicle is a Tacoma. One of the most popular pickups to steal, or just steal parts from. My property doesn't have space to park off street. So, while I have an alarm, kill switch and physical locking devices to prevent theft of the vehicle, it's still wide open to smash and grabs. Anything tempting in lain sight just ups the chances. I could go on and on why this is so, but the reality is there is no enforcement of the laws regarding vehicle thefts and thefts from vehicles. Oh, you can go online and file a report (at least the trees won't be harmed) but it will never been seen by human eyes.1 point

Yes, I have Plasti-Dip sprayed the pluck-a-fit foam in five cases with good results. Some years back I came across the tip on making foam, especially pluck-a-fit foam, more durable and tear resistant. It's simple enough to do, but there are a few tricks to making it work: 1) Do it in WELL ventilated area where over spray will not be problem. Use personal protection as needed. 2) Put the foam on a very large piece of cardboard and align it like it is in the case. 3) The solvent used in Plasti Dip can melt the foam, so the first several coats must be very light to create protective layer. 4) Make sure you spray inside the cut-outs and on the ends. Spraying the underside of the foam is not necessary. 4) Take your time and let each coat dry completely. 5) Add coats until the Plasti-Dip is thick enough to provide the desired protection. 6) Don't use the Plasti-Dip coated foam until the solvent smell is gone.1 point

As @Socalgmrs pointed out, there's not much of a market for used two-way radios. Burglars want a quick turn-around; they don't typically list their stolen goods on Ebay. Resellers of stolen goods may, but the prices they can get usually don't justify the risk. Pawn shops may still buy CBs (IDK), but GMRS or amateur radios are too much of a niche market for the usual fences to be interested in them. Crackheads aren't the brightest bulbs in the chandelier, so some of them may not have figured that out yet, but most thieves already have an idea what they can sell and what they can't. Nevertheless, I take some reasonable precautions. The radio is mounted under a seat and when I'm going to park somewhere sketchy, I remove the head unit from the mount and stick it under a seat or cover it up. I also remove the antenna to prevent vandalism. Most people probably don't even notice an extra 20" antenna, but the occasional jackwagon will break it off just because it's there. Of course, I lock the car just so they'd have to go to a little extra effort and might be seen breaking in, for whatever that's worth. Beyond that, there's not much you can do. Don't put anything on your car which might draw unwanted attention such as political stickers, firearm logos, or "Keep honking. I'm reloading." signs. Think of the "gray man" concept as applied to vehicles. If you drive a BMW, all bets are off, however.1 point
-
Locks only keep honest people honest. If a thief wants something they will just take it. As others have mentioned, you can get creative on how and where you mount radios. Taking the antennas off and removing the hand mics can help. One of the reasons I like having radios with remote head units is that I can just unhook the control cable and rove the heads. I won't put anytime of radio or firearm related stickers on my vehicles. Firearm related stickers are a sure guarantee that your vehicle will be broken into if you go to St Louis.1 point

Games handheld radio
Seapup reacted to OffRoaderX for a question
Hearing them talk a channel number between 15 and 22? If so, my guess, based on 1,000 other people asking the exact same question, is that you are hearing people talking on a repeater. They will not hear you until you configure your radio to transmit on the repeater. If not and you are hearing them on channels 1-14, then either they are using tones/codes so they cant hear you or, they just dont want to talk to you. Hope this helps!1 point -

I have the TIDRadio TD-H3 (a pair) and the Wouxun KG-935G Plus. The H3s are dirty as all hell and can often be heard over police and fire frequencies in my city. The Wouxun is very well-built, solid feeling, has a decent sounding speaker, the control knobs feel nice and tolerant, and the signal + audio reports I get for it are always good and people often ask me what I am using and when I tell them, they are shocked while claiming they never thought it would be a Wouxun CCR. Good day Fellow Enthusiasts, My name is Tony the Chief Radio officer for Sonoma County Neighborhood Auxillary Communication Service(non agency, volunteers). We have created a 20 plus repated system here using the Motorola SLR5700 series repeater. we have deployed 1000's of radios to neighborhoods and teach resilency and self preservation using GMRS/Amateur/Cup and string/smoke signals/bullhorns you name it we will try it, to communicate. I understand that we have very few GMRS frequenciesto use and we want to be good stewards to our neighboring counties. So i want to simulcast to minimize power output and fequency usage. We also plan to install backbone and redundancy using ubiquitous and LoRa radio. i am asking you good people for advice, reference material and/or experiences in how you have done this. Presently i am looking at using the RTCM thin client or a stand alone RPI. I know my way around a RPI enough to ge tmyself in trouble and would prefer a more plug n play approach. of course money is a big consideration since we are a volunteer group. i apprecaite you folks for doing what you do providing that redundancyfor your communities Tony Goodwin Chief Radio Officer: Sonoma County Neighborhood Auxillary Communication Service Sonoma County, CA.1 point
