  1. While correct, I suspect the crowd-funding would be significantly short of the cost to get one up in near earth orbit. I wonder what space dust and the extreme temperatures would do to a "mobile" duplexer though.

If I recall correctly, you have to do it in the software.

    zello app linking

No. There are no regulations or rules against a software company making software that can be used for among many other things, linking repeaters. It is the radio operator's responsibility to not violate the rules. Zello began deprecating the desktop version years ago when they stopped updating it and removed the direct-links to the download from their website.

  9. Where did you find this information? Only asking because I didn't see anything on their blog mentioning it. Thanks.

I wouldn't be too afraid of that. Pretty sure you would have to read and understand the manual or find the right YouTube video. Probably as likely as randomly hitting the tone by guessing.

  13. A lot of new radios have automatic tone ID. If both tones are the same, they only need to be within receiving range of the repeater. If the tones are different (or only input), they would have to be within range of someone transmitting to the repeater, but it is automated these days. No longer necessary to just quess.

    What did I do wrong?

I think it just comes out the other way. But full disclosure — I am a member of RR. What I really refer to is the people on there who see a forum post marked HALP MEH! and they chime in with "do your own research" instead of just helping a new amateur. It's like with Linux forums... mostly unhelpful jerks who pretend that they were born with what they know so others shouldn't ask for help if they weren't

I think the biggest difference between CB licensing and GMRS licensing is that CB Licenses were on paper and the reply was on paper and had to be stored in filing cabinet$ and someone had to be paid to handle all that paper and deposit the check and follow-up on bounced checks and returned mail, etc. My GMRS license was filed digitally, paid for digitally, and sent to me digitally. All on a Sunday (i.e. no human beings involved). Bits on a server are so cheap (not zero, but really cheap) that as long as people are willing to pay for a GMRS license, they'll take the money.

Nothing except the fact that most of the people who want/need an FRS radio aren't "radio people" and don't even understand the need for programming. Most will just give up if faced with the necessity to do more than push the button and talk. Admittedly, it's not a very high bar, but it does make some difference.

GMRS is actually not bad until you get into the bigger cities..Then it seem's 'Game off' time

  20. Well I went and ordered one. Getting it outside on the roof is going to be a bigger project than I expected so I threw it in the attic for now. Will see if it makes a difference compared to my little 2.5db antenna I had. Swr is 1.75. Dropped to 1.4ish when I held it down in the house below the attic so I'm guessing being so close to the roofing is raising the swr a little but not enough to be too worried about. Funny thing is my Ed fong antenna was a 1.05 but didn't seem to work any better (or maybe a little worde) than the cheapo amazon antenna I was running.

According to the FCC it's not illegal to link repeater to Zello channels. I called them and they said that it is NOT illegal those who says its illegal is wrong

  22. TNRonin, Youre getting good advice from radio professionals about the best antennas and feed line. That’s great if you really want the best. If that’s the case simply ignore the rest of this post. If you’re still reading you might be a hobbyist who’s just interested in “good enough“ and the financial savings that implies. You already have LM400 feedline. I think you already have a J-pole. A short run of LM400 will have nearly no discernible incremental losses compared to hardline. Just make sure you seal the connectors against moisture. A better antenna will make a difference, but how much is that worth to you? Hook up what you have and try it. It won’t cost you anything but your time and I guarantee you’ll learn from the experience. Then, if it doesn’t work like you want, you can always try a different antenna (or perhaps raising the j-pole). You can always upgrade the feed line as well. I would hate to see your enjoyment of the hobby diminished because you’ve been convinced that what you have isn’t good enough when the actual incremental improvement is only measurable to professionals. Don’t let the best stand in the way of the good enough. Lots of people use LM400 and j-poles with inexpensive repeaters and do just fine. In the end elevation and location are the most important factors and all the money you have cannot overcome that.

Well, there is a risk of an unlicensed person getting on the zello channel and using the repeater. AntiSquid Disclaimer: All posted content is personal opinion only and may not imply fact or accusation.

  24. It would have had to be channel 7 since channels 7-14 are the interstitial channels at 467 MHz.
