UHF radio wave are mostly line of sight. As long as nothing is in the way distance can be very far with the curvature of the earth being the limiting factor. Altitude is the best way to remove obstructions from the path. If you can get hand held radios on top of hills with nothing in between you may be able to talk 100 miles or more. Hook them up to mobile antennas in cars is even better. It's when things start getting in the way that more power helps to penetrate forest's and buildings etc. You want to keep the antennas in the clear as much as possible. Radio require a fair amount of just you experimenting to learn what works for you in your situation. Good luck and have fun.

Midland Xtakers for Christmas present

Cool! Hope he likes them. They will be handy around the neighborhood. -
GMRS is analog.

I have been going back and forth on this idea for a while now. But I keep thinking that if we did have a sticky and newbies actually would look at it then it would give us all a lot less to talk about. These forums are already very quiet most of the time. I don't know.

How are you testing? Do you have a friend that has a radio at a known location/distance or are you reaching out to strangers? If you are hearing folks but they do not respond they may be using a repeater and if you are not set up for that they will not hear you. It may also be that they have no interest in talking to strangers. GMRS is intended primarily for friends and family to stay in touch and not really for making random contacts. However if you ask for a radio or signal check many people will come back. It is also possible they are using privacy tones between their own group and will not hear you. Or they could just be out of range. Quite often you will hear folks but not be able to reach them for various reasons. The best thing to do for testing is to have a friend with another radio so you two can confirm that things are working and also to drive around your local area and map out where you can and cannot reach.

One other advantage I discovered is that it makes good use of a little power. A 5 watt HT is all I have needed even 30 miles is no problem. Its a very well built antenna as well. Very happy with it so far. Had it about six months.
-
In my use case it works great. I live on a hill top about 5 miles from our small town and most of my use is in that direction in about a 30-40° arc. I have it pointed to about the center of the arc and get excellent coverage of my contact area. Its not as deaf in the null directions as I was expecting. I still get usable coverage in most directions. You can always use a rotator if needed.

That is an excellent antenna but it is directional. You have to point it in the general direction you want. I have one for my base station. Did you have a question about it?

High Watt mobile designed so the main unit can be hidden

Now imagine switching to a taller high gain antenna. That will really let that 50 watts sing. -

Has anyone tried the KG 1000M yet?
WRWE456 replied to Craws907's topic in Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS)
I think they should have a version of the KG-XS20G although that would still be overkill with capabilities but half the price of the 1000m. I believe they came out with the KG-1000m before the XS20G so already have a MURS mobile on the market but who knows. My wife and I use the KG-935G plus for GMRS mobile's with mag mount antennas that cover MURS also and we swap the 935's for KG-805m MURS HT's quite often. The 805m puts out the full two watts and works great as a mobile as does the 935G. Takes the same speaker/mic and antenna adapter which make swapping them a breeze. So far we get 5-6 miles easy which works fine around our area. Have not tested further yet but will soon. -
Cheap Vs Expensive - what do you really get?
WRWE456 replied to Tiercel's question in Technical Discussion
This report should help reinforce the point. https://rumble.com/v3nhca7-the-wouxun-kg-935g-still-the-best-gmrs-ht.html -
I have not tried one yet but have heard that they are good if you want to limit your range intentionally such as using your radios as an intercom or just around the yard for example where you don't need the whole town to hear your conversations. Another tool for the radio tool bag I suppose.

Cheap Vs Expensive - what do you really get?
WRWE456 replied to Tiercel's question in Technical Discussion
If your life or the lives of loved ones depended on having a working radio for whatever reason which would you chose? One made to the absolute lowest price point as its primary goal or one that was designed to be a truly good performing and durable radio as its goal? Just like with most anything else it depends what you are using it for. Is it just a toy or are you needing it for important serious work? -
Could be the meter or connections? It happens.
-
For some reason I do not see the picture just audio so can't tell what is happening in your video.
-
Are you using a meter between an HT and its stock antenna?
-
Its just like on modern cars how law enforcement have your car shut off if you are not stopping or whatever. Come think of it that could be useful on CB's at times.

Newbie looking for HT to cover both GMRS and HAM frequencies...
WRWE456 replied to WRZE000's topic in General Discussion
Great choice of radio! I have 3 KG-935+. My wife and I use them for mobile's as well as HT's. Mag mount antennas, some type of mount/holder and a speaker/mic make a great choice for mobile if the 5 watts works in your situation. You can also get the optional battery eliminator power adapter for cig. lighter plug. No permanent install required and no need for an extra radio. We also use a KG-1000G+ as a base radio in our hill top home that over looks our most used area (with a directional Yagi antenna on the roof) but for our use it has proven to be over kill as the 5 watts of the 935 is enough in most cases. Out to ten miles is no problem. We live on an island and that is the travel limit. That said in a suburban setting you may need more power. Sounds like you are off to a great start. -
It may be helpful to know how far it is from your place to your buddies tall building? Is said building where he lives? If it is maybe he can just put up an antenna on the roof, that may be all you need. If not then a repeater may be the answer. Also is there power there that you can just plug into?

Total Newbie with multiple questions:
WRWE456 replied to CyborgAlienWRYG738's question in Technical Discussion
Why not call a radio dealer and just have them put a package together for you? That sounds like what you are asking for. Here you will get a bunch of different answers and recommendations that will likely just be confusing. For GMRS contact Buy Two Way Radios. https://www.buytwowayradios.com/ They will be glad to help you. Now if you really want to learn about radio so you can make your own decisions then this forum is one of many good resources. Radio is very technical and to be competent requires some understanding of how it works and experimenting and practice to learn what works and what does not in your situation. -
High Watt mobile designed so the main unit can be hidden
WRWE456 replied to Tiercel's question in Technical Discussion
If that is the one you want just order it now rather than waiting for it to come back in stock. You will be that much further ahead in line. -
I will second that welcome!

I will also recommend the KG-1000Gplus. It is likely the best mobile/base on the market as well. It is my base radio and I love it! https://www.buytwowayradios.com/wouxun-kg-1000g-plus.html?___SID=U
