  1. I love my 48” foldable antenna. With a stock antenna I can do about 15miles. A 771g gets me out to 30-40 miles and a 48” will hit 50miles. My foldable 48” is always in my pack just in case
  2. No. At no time do you need to ground the antenna. It needs a ground plane yes but not a chassis ground. Cb antennas need to be grounded to the chassis but not a gmrs mag mount. If it needed that it would have a place to put a ground wire. Just run it. I’ve got great distance 40-60 miles and swr with a mag mount and 20w radio.
  3. Yes soo and dcs is the same thing. It’s just a digital tone and it analog. Did you input them correctly do you have the programing set to cross tone? Are you programming in the radio or on the computer? What radio is it? Do you know for sure you could health that particular repeater before? May it have been a different repeater or simplex? If you leave the receive tone off you will have no idea what you’re listening to…ie another repeater or simplex. There is no reason at all to leave the receive time off. Just program it Correctly and go for it.
  4. I’ve got too much going on in my life to worry about tuning antennas. I get pretuned antennas and get over 200miles from a 20w base station. Never have over 1.4swr on any gmrs frequency. Even my little mag mounts on the trucks are 1.2-1.5 and do 50-60miles no issue.
  5. I would just be concerned you’re not getting the greatest ground plane with that antenna mounted on the edge of the hood like that. Cb antennas would work fine that way but a uhf ground plane antenna usually would needs 12” min all the way around and to be above the cab/passenger compartment. It’s seams that may be a very front right heavy transmit and receive location.
  6. Nothing about this picture is professional or correct. I mean the placement of the radio alone is soooo stupid.
  7. Yea love those mounts very good quality. But they do put the radio in a problem area.
  8. Where is it mounted that is going to get that hot? Is in on the dash in direct sun light?
  9. What antenna is that on the lip mount? Obviously it’s a no ground plane antenna?
  10. Did you read the book? Watch you tube videos? Exactly what is the problem?
  11. But you still paid 2-3xs the money of a better radio. for the money I’d never own a midland radio.
  12. I use water proof marine shrink wrap personally. The mentioned tape works great as well.

    Gmrs zello

Yes you can. Zello needs to be running on a computer that is connected to a radio that is programmed to the channel or the repeater you want to connect with. It takes a computer that is on all day and a specific type or radio that will net work with the computer.
  14. If this is too much you may want to re evaluate things in life. First, yes the fcc web site sucks but oh well. Every one else gets it. Second this site takes time to update. Usually a few days. Oh well, it’s a free web site that is a huge wealth of info. Be patient. 3rd I don’t think any radio comes with pre programmed repeaters. You must look them up on sites like this and program them with the specific tones provided. Lastly gmrs is ment to bring your own friends and family. Gmrs use is not primarily repeater use. Get a programming cable and down load some software chirp is free, rt systems cost money. There may be others. Computer programming makes things 100xs easier. Learn to use your radio. I have a uv9r. Other than the crappy programming port it’s a great starter radio. It’s actually my go to since it’s cheap and is water proof (ish). Get your family or friends or buddy’s at work a $20 radio and start talking. Look up every repeater near you ask permission if need be and program it in and start talking. Life is about relaxing and taking things slow and learning. Many guys myself included will take time from their personal life to sit on the phone if need be and help you get your radio programmed. Or even email you a starter program for your radio. your in San Diego so there are many repeaters that you can hit and many that are just out side San Diego that you may consider. Slow down and have fun with it. This isn’t HAM
  15. Sma female. Kinda pointless to test an HT I’ve never felt the need. Mine work from 1/2 mile to 30miles depending on line of site. That’s about all I need to know. And you won’t be able to reliably test swr on an ht
  16. What are you asking? It’s a radio same as any other just in a different package or maybe some different options. It still receives and it still transmits same as any other 5? Ish watt radio. You may get 1mile or less you may get 30miles or more.

    New to radio

Just go away. Stop allowing the fcc to rule your life. It’s not your place to care if a uv5r (probably the single most popular ht in the world) is gmrs certified. Just go away.
  18. I still want to know why all this yagi and tram and 2 antenna stuff for just 15miles. My hts do over 30miles easy just get a comet 712efc some lmr400 and a 20-50w radio and your set. Woods or not it should blast right through and you’ll only need one antenna an no tuning. If I can do 235miles with a 20w radio with mountains in the way you can do 15miles with woods keep it simple
  19. Unlesss they tuned your antenna in the factory the ma09 is tuned for all gmrs frequencies. You may have something else going on like the adaptor from the ht to the coax. personally I’d run 2 antennas. I’m not a fan of anything retivis but I’d keep the repeater exactly how it came. then buy a comet 712efc with some lmr400 and mount it as far away from the other antenna has you can and at a different height preferably 12-14” higher or lower then the other one. My 5w ht with the comet does 40-50 miles. My 20w base statin does over 200 miles with the comet.
  20. 1st why any one would live in a hoa in the first place and why any one would build a home in an hoa is beyond me. We should be boycotting these freedom robbers at every turn. It’s your home. You should be able to do what you want in it. It’s like your building your home in prison on purpose 2nd a repeater usually only benefits others and not you. If you can’t get your antenna up high with good line of site it will do very little good anyway. I’d concentrate on (not living in an hoa) getting a good base station set up with good coax and a good antenna in the attic. It will work but you’re going to severely neuter your transmit ability.

    New to radio

    So what if it isn’t?
  22. This is why you don’t go out alone. I learned this when I was 5 yrs old.
  23. Wow. This is a lot of words for a problem that I bet doesn’t affect most people.
  24. I know the 20v4 can be unlocked so I’d bet this one can be. As for noaa you would need to set the frequencies into a channel. I also ways start noaa on 100, 101,102…ect.

    New to radio

The easiest way to program your radio is on a computer. Look up local repeaters and ask permission to join. Chat with them. Many have nets once a week or so to test equipment
