  1. So you rewired a whole truck custom and only used 14g wire for the radio? You had the opportunity to run 12 or even 10 and you went with 14g. Will it work? Yes but why limit your self? I’m also not going to get into breakers (very slow) in automotive use with barely adequate wire gauge. Ive built custom wire harness from scratch every day for over 20years in on road , off road, crawlers, race trucks and cars, classics and boats. Not once ever have I seen air craft breakers and that’s for a reason. Don’t bother insuring your rig. When it burns down they won’t pay out if they find out you used slow air craft breakers. Also dump the “sealed” connectors I assume something like a gm weather pack or similar and Just crimp solder and water proof shrink wrap I don’t use any “connectors” of any type ever Now to the point, yes they use junk. Yes tear them apart and make a new harness BUT any radio, gmrs cb ham should be wired directly to the battery with a fuse right at the battery on both negative and positive. Then they usually put another one at the radio for some reason (not me). I always use the called out fuse size and one up wire size.
  2. Well that’s dumb. I’m soo glad I’ve never bothered with Any firm ware update in my life on any item I’ve ever had. I just program the radio and use it.
  3. Do you have any other radios to test this out. 30 miles may just be on the edge of the repeater. Do you have a mobile or hand held you can start at your home and drive closer and closer untill you hit it? We’re I’m at we have very nice repeaters that are all 50w with great antennas that have well over 100mile radius but some just don’t. And honestly the antenna you linked to may not be very good. Kind of a no name antenna. Id send it back and spend a little more and order a comet 712efc it’s 10’ tall and 9db gain. Id also dump the co-ax and get real Lmr400. You spent all kinds of money on the radio and very little on the important antenna and coax. Unfortunately you did things backwards.
  4. Haha this would only matter on transmit. Not receive so the op was asking about receiving.
  5. Ignore the guy above. He didn’t get it. I’d bet your radios receive tone is not programmed correctly
  6. Awsome. Yes range can be surprisingly good given the correct circumstances. People tell me all day long I don’t get 200 miles from my 20w base station from Southern California to Las Vegas Nevada but it happens all the time. I make 2 nets a week. We also have a huge repeater that gets from the ocean to the desert And many in the club are 60+ miles away using hand helds. Radio….It’s a fun thing when it works out.
  7. AND…. Even if that’s true, he did say gmrs compatible, who cares. I’d be very willing to be there are more non compliant radios in gmrs then compliant.
  8. Well normally I’d say ANYTHING is better than midland but retivis is waaaay down on the list as well. One is waay over priced and the other is still over priced. One well work ok and one doesn’t work well at all. There are much better radios available for the same or less money with the same or more features.
  9. I still use uv5r radios all the time. I have many other motorola and wouxun radios as well but the cheap boof wangs get used more. all the hand helds all transmit just as far $20 or $500
  10. Put the plus 5 back in. It has to be there. The repeater receives on 1 and transmits in the other. If you sent it up correctly it will work. Also put it on high power. Get everything set up then lower the power if you want if you can
  11. Totally agree. Hate them! Over priced junk. Can’t stand them. Don’t even want to look at them. Don’t want to hear about them. Marketing gimmicks. Total rip off.
  12. Get a programming cable, Down load chirp and use GM-5RH as the radio. 100xs easier then on the face of the radio. can you here traffic on the repeater? How far are you? Are you close enough to hit it with an HT? Good line of sight?
  13. I’d remove the battery’s because IF anything happens to them, they get too hot or too cold ect, with lithium batteries you never know, you won’t loose your radio also. I like to long term store lithium battery’s in fire proof battery socks seperate from radios.
  14. Do you have a need to transmit on ham bands or emergency bands in the event you’re in a life threatening situation where cell phones are not useable? Some people spend a load of time far away from cell phone and gmrs repeaters. Some times those activities can put you in life threatening situations. If that is you I’d leave it open to all frequencies and program as many repeaters and emergency frequencies as I could get my hands on that are local to the area you will be In. If that’s not you are you worried about end of the world, shtf, apocalyptic events? If so leave it open. If your just a gmrs operators that doesn’t care about anything else then set it to gmrs and have fun
  15. Looks ok. Are you sure it’s still active? Can you hear other people on it? Can you email the owner to make sure nothing changed. Maybe they have a weekly net you can check in on.
  16. How far away are you from the repeater? Do you know for sure your radio is working well? Good line of sight?
  17. Yes post the screen shot and post the tones in and out.
  18. Gmrs is super cheap to get into I mean a $20 ht will get many people by once you get out of the city or big mountains. It’s $35 for a whole family for 10years. Other than the stupid fcc web site it’s super easy to get into. Many people see things on the wall and in our future and want some emergency comms. This fits the bill nicely. I do talk to many people that are taken in by ads promising 500mile ranges and what not so they buy the radio only to have to clue how to use it. From what I see ham is growing also just not as fast. For some gmrs is a gateway drug but others are very happy with gmrs especially with all the repeaters and groups and clubs.
  19. Well. You have a retivis sooooo ANYTHING is possible. I’m no help as I stay away from retivis radios.
  20. You don’t sorry. They can hear everything said anyway so it’s not private in any way no matter the tones. So I’d say just change them often if it becomes a problem with jerks scanning then harassing you.
  21. This seams to be the mindset of a sad sad ham. You’re the “some people” I’ve been warned about. This has nothing to do with kerchunking or roger beeps. However roger beeps are a personal thing unless a repeater owner asks you to not use them. or they are over used to annoy others. This issue is about the alphabet and some jerk jumping on some one for mixing up alphabets. We are NOT calling in a drone strike here. We are talking with friends and family. I don’t care if some one says apple, banana, cat, dog, emerald, floor, goober, hill, igloo, jello, dam-it now I want some jello. Anyway it’s no one business what phonic alphabet some one uses. to the OP. Go ahead and use or confuse what ever you want. Have fun and keep on the air. to the other guy… get your ham tick and leave gmrs alone.
  22. Who cares what you use or how you mix it. If I found out something like that upset some jerk on the radio I’d do it 10xs more. It’s non of their business. I’d make my own and mix all 3.
  23. What is the hurry? I mean really. You’re in a big hurry to find local repeaters and ask for access from them from the private owners that may or may not even get back to you. Just slow down. Take a breath and wait. It’s really not a big deal. You may ask for access to a repeater and you may never hear back. No one even has to give you access. So you could be weeks or more away. I’d suggest you start listening to local traffic and see if you can make simplex contacts. Remember gmrs really Is for friends and family. For bringing your own contacts not for rushing a privately owned site to get access to privately owned repeaters.
  24. Is your uv9 a boofwang or a woxoun I have both. The boofwang uv9 uses a female sma. The woxoun uv9 uses a male sma. they make foldable antennas for both.
