  1. I’ve got a kg uv9 and the knob on top is super annoying. I’m always hitting it. I have to lock it down all the time. And when it’s locked it will only transmit on the main channel not top and bottom.
  2. Most radios have a non use timer that you can program to turn off after 5,15,30,45min ect of non use. I grew up driving old cars that you had to manually turn off the lights so I’m used to checking and turning off my radio when I get out of the trucks. It’s just second nature. But if you can’t do that a pod switch system will work. Some people swear it creates noise so you may or may not have that issue.
  3. You’ve upset the mASS’s. Soo many people have no idea this is so easily done. Some people may be very upset at you. Some heads may explode.
  4. Looks good. You can always add the receive later. Send it. See what happens.
  5. Sounds good. Well if you have the coax and the pipe just toss it all up and see how it goes. Hope it works out.
  6. Yup. The “best” is a loaded question. From my experience a $20 ht transmits just as far a a $500 Motorola ht. So it comes down to features and build quality. Water proof? Budget? Open or locked? Noaa? Accessories? Extended battery’s? Easy to program? Type c charging? Ect… I’ll say 90% of the time all my radios that are over $50 sit in the shelf and my $20 are the ones I use since they can get lost, broken, run over, stolen, go in the creek, get stepped on my a horse, ect… and I don’t care that much. If some thing like that happens to my wouxons or Motorolas I’m gonna be upset.
  7. I’m not a fan of tram and if you can go higher I’d recommend a comet712efc but any height will help you out. Is you coax of good quality? How far is your run?
  8. What antenna are you using? How many watts on the radio? Your distance seams very close. What are the surroundings. Mine is 30’ to the tip and 60miles simplex is no problem at all with a 20w radio.
  9. But it doesn’t say anything about gmrs or uhf. It might not be gmrs certified.
  10. I know many people that use that one. Not the best but not the worst. It works for them. It’s nothing too special but it puts out enough amps for a 50w base station and does 13.8volts.
  11. Your radio is great. Many people I know run them and love them. I’ve got a few trucks and a couple radios at the house and other hobbys so I’m always on a budget so never had a kg1000. I always get the tallest antenna with the highest gain I can afford. But I don’t have a garage or parking structures or anything to get in the way. Run what you have and see how it works out.
  12. Yes you’re going to need ground plane with that antenna so the rear middle of the Cherokee Atleast 8-12” from the rear will be great. Mount it all up and see how it goes.
  13. Probably not. But why not just run a wired camera? You already have power running to the 3rd brake light and coax to the antenna so what’s one more wire to the camera?
  14. Are there better parts in the world? Yes. Do you need better parts? That’s up to you. Does this set up work for you? I personally can’t stand ghost antennas of any kind, but if it works for your needs then No you don’t need “better”parts. If it doesnt work for you you’re going to need to upgrade something. It’s Always best in my opinion to spend the time and money on good coax and good antenna. A radio is a radio and all transmit about the same per watt but an antenna makes all the difference. I hope it works great for you and your needs
  15. You can order 70’ of cable and put your own ends on it?
  16. Whaaaa? Problems with a first generation new piece of equipment? Really? I’m sooo NOT surprised. I’ve made it a point no never ever buy any first generation anything. There are many many better options that are proven to work well.
  17. Why get a radio you can only receive on most frequencies? None of my mobile units cost more then $150. All of them are full uhf and vhf transmit and they are all water proof and with the right antennas on the trucks 75 miles is easy and at home with a big antenna 200 miles is easy and happens every day. And I beat the heck out of my radios 7 days a week and have never had one issue. All are chirp and no one can tell what radios I have , not that I care what other people think.
  18. Just use a 771 and send it.
  19. So you rewired a whole truck custom and only used 14g wire for the radio? You had the opportunity to run 12 or even 10 and you went with 14g. Will it work? Yes but why limit your self? I’m also not going to get into breakers (very slow) in automotive use with barely adequate wire gauge. Ive built custom wire harness from scratch every day for over 20years in on road , off road, crawlers, race trucks and cars, classics and boats. Not once ever have I seen air craft breakers and that’s for a reason. Don’t bother insuring your rig. When it burns down they won’t pay out if they find out you used slow air craft breakers. Also dump the “sealed” connectors I assume something like a gm weather pack or similar and Just crimp solder and water proof shrink wrap I don’t use any “connectors” of any type ever Now to the point, yes they use junk. Yes tear them apart and make a new harness BUT any radio, gmrs cb ham should be wired directly to the battery with a fuse right at the battery on both negative and positive. Then they usually put another one at the radio for some reason (not me). I always use the called out fuse size and one up wire size.
  20. Well that’s dumb. I’m soo glad I’ve never bothered with Any firm ware update in my life on any item I’ve ever had. I just program the radio and use it.
  21. Do you have any other radios to test this out. 30 miles may just be on the edge of the repeater. Do you have a mobile or hand held you can start at your home and drive closer and closer untill you hit it? We’re I’m at we have very nice repeaters that are all 50w with great antennas that have well over 100mile radius but some just don’t. And honestly the antenna you linked to may not be very good. Kind of a no name antenna. Id send it back and spend a little more and order a comet 712efc it’s 10’ tall and 9db gain. Id also dump the co-ax and get real Lmr400. You spent all kinds of money on the radio and very little on the important antenna and coax. Unfortunately you did things backwards.
  22. Haha this would only matter on transmit. Not receive so the op was asking about receiving.
  23. Ignore the guy above. He didn’t get it. I’d bet your radios receive tone is not programmed correctly
  24. Awsome. Yes range can be surprisingly good given the correct circumstances. People tell me all day long I don’t get 200 miles from my 20w base station from Southern California to Las Vegas Nevada but it happens all the time. I make 2 nets a week. We also have a huge repeater that gets from the ocean to the desert And many in the club are 60+ miles away using hand helds. Radio….It’s a fun thing when it works out.
