On that Radio You Can NOT Change or modify Channels 1-30 and Channels 117-125 They are Preset that way
Using Chirp to program Channels after channel 30 will save all when you upload to the radio
You can change Some Settings  But some reset to Default setting
  2. Thanks

Steve is right. In that kind of setting, it's all about the obstructions, int this case, buildings. Increasing power doesn't penetrate a building.
Where I live and operate, we have lots of trees. In this case power does come into play. If you can't get above the trees(and I can't) then you have to go through them. When I'm at my house and on a UV-5R8W, if I use medium power, I can't hit my favorite repeater. On high power, I can hit the repeater just fine. When I'm near or on loop 610 with my mobile radio, it doesn't matter how much power I use, I get picket fencing. You just can't punch through buildings with a GMRS radio. You can, however, sometimes bounce off of them.
This is why trying to figure out the fars can only be done by a field test.

No, doubling the power won’t double the range.
You might be surprised but doubling the power might not make any real difference in range. Power isn’t the limiting factor.

No worries on my part. I don't let politics dictate my lifestyle or sway my views and opinions on the issues. Politics definitely don't influence me on how I vote, I vote on what "I" feel is the best for the greater good.

It’s impossible to reliably say. They might go from one block to another or they could go miles between upper floors of two different buildings.

    Hello
    New to GMRS.
I have seen several videos where it was said that it is possible to listen to frequencies on a GMRS radio that are not GMRS.
If this is possible, is there a web site I can check and see if I can find these frequencies based on location?
    Thanks.

So far the best luck I have had using the UV-9G has been the Nagoya 771G. I think I ended up using a bit of emery cloth to shave it down a bit as it was a snug fit on that radio. The Signal Stick is a great antenna but I don’t believe they make one tuned for GMRS specifically so like the UT-72 that’s probably not your best choice. I have no experience with the UT-72G. I agree with @WRQC527 ,being that it’s tuned for GMRS it’s going to do better than the UT-72 . Real world testing will beat speculation on how many fars you will get.
If you can get up on your roof or a ladder safely you may get some idea of the improvement height makes and think of a base station with an antenna mounted higher. If you know where the repeaters are this line of sight tool may help in seeing your path to them.
Oh and shout out to @WRQC527 nice deduction on the key strokes 😀

Multi-band antennae are compromises and not ideal when it comes to great distances. It's best to use antennae specific to your operating band for optimum performance and for the farz you're trying to achieve.

I will also add that if an analog signal comes along and happens to be as strong if not stronger than the digital signal you are trying to listen to, the analog will either make it impossible to hear the digital signal or you just wont hear it at all.

That concept of “additional tools” is why our club is discussing putting up a commercial repeater at the same site of our Amateur repeater so that in an disaster we could hand out commercial radios to specific unlicensed people.

I've had a amateur license for decades. Got it for the communications aspect during desert adventures. Unfortunately most of the folks I went with decided not to get a license. Moved to GMRS because most of the family and friends I am around now will use it. A couple of friends and some other family members have GMRS licenses now. I'm talking to a few neighbors about getting GMRS licenses and using the radios to check up each other during winter weather events and during wildfire season. I have a couple of older neighbors that don't have cell phones. I will keep my amateur license as well. As others have said, having more tools is good.

I really like my RT97..Works great for what I need, which is occasional use in the mountains for communications. I can get about a 30 mile circle which is more than enough for my needs.

Rich doesn't remove listings from the site. After 1 year of no updates it gets "hidden" on the map unless you click on stale and offline repeaters. It would be great if they dropped after 1 year completely from the site with no interaction as I'm sure many would disappear. Folks don't use repeater book as that's primarily a ham site. Most hams keep stuff up to date but I can tell you many are not valid there either. I'm sure both sites have good info for certain areas but none are perfect. Even LMR licensed stuff may or may not be on the air for a particular license.

This one reflects removing  LIC Expired as they would not be legal to operate..   Didn't have the formula plugged for this option

All repeaters listed here are connected to the ORN and MYGMRS network. If you are connected via a node assignment list it here (repeater name, Freq, location, and repeater owner) DO NOT list pl tone, if repeater is listed on mygmrs.com include link to the repeater owner directly for members to goto for usage request.

Welcome @WSAG780 and @WSAH452. GMRS is a great service and I know you will both enjoy it. As @gortex2 you should use type certified radios but don't sweat it. Half or more of the people I talk to on GMRS aren't using type certified radios and no one cares as long as they stick to all the rest of the regs.

Use of FRS radios is a controversial topic amongst GMRS users, as they mostly see it as more interference to their licensed activities.  So you are asking the fox how best to protect the henhouse!
I say: Just get yourself a GMRS license and now you can use detached antennas and more power!
    Good luck!
