Hey Spaz, Outstanding review. Thank you for the work. Check out the manuals for the GMRS-50X1 and the UV-50X2. They used a corrected version for the new radio. Probably just like the firmware. Thanks again, Keith T

Wow, there are jerks in this world and then there are JERKS,!!! Just got off another post here about HOA membership and how they did not exclude A$$ #ole$. Looks like owning a repeater does not guarantee a human response to a request for information.

GMRS-50X1 50 Watt Mobile Radio (Released Yesterday)
Elkhunter521 replied to WQPT412's topic in Equipment Reviews
Just for the record, If bought direct from Btech, $161 (using their 10% discount) No tax (at least to Wa state) Free shipping. But I would not make a decision about this or anything for 20$. -
Wow, thermometer on my covered patio hit 91° yesterday, Washougal Wa. Its just north and 15 miles east of Portland Or. Should be 65°. What happened to Spring?

Hey, Thanks

Is this modification necessary to enter pl tones from the panel?

I just had an ad pop up on Google for (2) Bf-888s for 19$ and change. Face it, 10$ apiece is a hard price to beat if you just want to talk a mile or so. (2 watt radios)

The FCC has incredible budget issues........ Wait, I will NOT stand up for a fed agency. Hmmmm, nevermind.

What is the hardware modification to enable FPP?

Hi new guys, You are entering an interesting and frustrating hobby. My first suggestion is to go thru the equipment reviews in this forum. Be sure of what your usage is BEFORE you buy! I didn't and it cost me $. Keep in mind that the best way to keep this radio band from going the way of CB radio is for EVERYONE to adhere to the rules. Welcome to the forum. Ask any question you want. Keith T

Corey, yur just mean. Some of the Chinese junk is good junk, and some of it is bad junk. Hmmm, I have some of the good junk and some of the bad (American labeled , you know who I mean) junk. Yup, yur just mean. Thank you for being honest and politically incorrect. !!, Keith T

As much as I dislike Midland, I do like their MXT275. It fits the same bracket as the XMT115. This bracket ia a well engineered mount. Ideal if you move one radio between 2 vehicles. (Unfortunately this is another narrow band radio) All radio controlls are in the handset, allowing for a remote mounting of the radio.

Im using a headache rack to mount antennas on my ford Superduty. The GMRS antenna is mounted on the top center of the rack. It is a unity gain (6") nmo mount on a 6"x6"x1/16 plate. Also on the headache rack are co-phase 4' firestick 5/8 wave antennas. They are 5'6" apart and mounted on plates 4 inches behind the rack. Both antennas are completely exposed to each other. The rack is bonded to the bed with 4 8ga stranded coper wires. The rack is also bonded to cab with 4 8ga stranded copper. I am also running a 30 mHz low filter on the system before it splits to co-phase. This brought swr down to 1.1.

Just an observation, I live near the junction of I-84 (major east/west) and I-5 (major north/south) Interstate highways. CB traffic is beginning to come back on I-84 which is across Columbia river from my house ( 4 miles and almost visible) I have only heard gmrs a couple of times but always on GMRS 18.(no call signs) CB is several an hour on ch 19, and ch 17. Again, just an observation.

Seeking logical rationale for Type 95

You do realize that you are expecting logic from an agency of the federal government. -
Front panel pl tones programming.
Elkhunter521 replied to Elkhunter521's question in Technical Discussion
Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback. Im still not sure on what radio to get to replace a XMT400. -
Front panel pl tones programming.
Elkhunter521 replied to Elkhunter521's question in Technical Discussion
Ok, Is there a type 90 radio that is front panel programmable for pl tones? -
Hi, I was just talking to a representative at USED RADIOS .COM. I was inquiring about a Kenwood TK 880. He stated that it was not front panel programmable for pl tones. He also stated he was unaware of any radio that was. Where have I gone wrong?

Can GMRS repeaters be linked to the web like Echo Link for hams?
Elkhunter521 replied to WRCP828's question in Technical Discussion
Hey Corey, Looking at it from a different viewpoint makes a difference. Other than my own trailer mounted repeater, there are none where I live. Gaining that kind of difference in distance is impressive. Sometimes the Symantecs overwhelms the subject. Then again, I do love a good rant. -
Can GMRS repeaters be linked to the web like Echo Link for hams?
Elkhunter521 replied to WRCP828's question in Technical Discussion
Hi all, Maybe im stupid, Ive been told that before, but I don't see a problem. GMRS is a radio service for people that want a family or a friendly radio service. People that just want to pick up a mike and talk. Why does everyone want to make this into something it is not and never will be. If you need something more than what it is, get an amature license. I dont have an amature license and Im happy with it. Wow, you got me ranting. SORRY. -
You stated you were using a Midland XMT400. Among other problems, this radio receives and transmits in narrow band. They do this to maintain useability with all the bubble pack radios they sell. The repeater you contacted was a wide band repeater ( most are)

Hi all, The power grid for Puerto Rico (PR) was crap before the last series of storms. After the storms wrecked what was left, PR waited for the US. To rebuild it. Hasn't happened. Before you shed a bunch of tears for PR keep in mind they pay NO income taxes to us as A US territory. Some of the PR population, some are quite wealthy , decided that privately owned and controlled com system was the answer. Private GMRS systems was their answer. This is not meant as a political statement. It is just my observation. Thanks for listen Keith T

Are GMRS repeaters required to identify every 15 minutes?
Elkhunter521 replied to WRAX891's topic in FCC Rules Discussion
Hmmmmmmm, well maybe I'm mistaken. -

Wow Corey, are you always so GRUMPY? -
Hi, You have options: 1. Use a part 95 radio on GMRS. Limited options that are not bubble pack and have been reclassified as frs radios. It is legal. 2. Use a part 97 radio on GMRS. ( ham radio) This is a cheap alternative. These are usually cheaper radios dominated by Bao Feng brand. These radios have problems broadcasting a signal that is clean and not interfering with other frequencies that may belong to emergency services. The use of these radios on GMRS is illegal. 3. Use a part 90 radio. This is a commercial radio that if you can find the software can be programmed to GMRS use. The best opinion (that ive found) has the FCC will ignore if not allow part 90 radio usage in part 95 service.
