you could have interference in your area. faulty after market antenna? I am guessing you have TX set for High. something is defiantly wrong though. Building top to LOS building top is easy. Maybe faulty radio? I over see a dozen Baofeng/Pofeng radios and they all function very well. Never found a faulty unit.

a mobile repeater could do the trick, if mounted in your car or truck in a parking area, can increase coverage nicely. add a small mast and improve coverage even more. murs is VHF and I hear its signal can travel with the terrain. GMRS is UHF and requires line of sight.

I only mentioned nano beam, because I have learned it will do it. not that I own one yet. I am still learning about Rocket, Bullet, M2 and M5, always very careful before I spend any money. I just got my antenna support structure installed, so I am excited to play with some nice new equipment. I am thinking the Rocket M2, because it has 2 antenna connectors and can be flashed with DD-wrt or open-wrt, I have a number of 2.4 ghz antennas, not as pretty as the Ubiquity nano units. still holden onto my cash till I know what I really want. It's only a hobby.

the radio you have can interfere with any of a number of licensed only services. including government frequencies. It can also be programed to work on properly MURS since it can TX at or less than 1 watt, but it can not be uses on FRS since it can not be turned down to 1/2 watt. Legality is further complicated for GMRS as no Baofeng/Pofung radio I am aware of is Part 95 certified. Many consider this cert. necessary to operate legally on GMRS that you seem to be licensed to use. If you are not a HAM do not key up HAM frequencies and stay far away from Government/ Public Service frequencies. interfering with PS could cost a life.

I was just in DC, thy could use a GMRS repeater there. I only found 2 REACT repeaters both marked private. I did listen to a few of them had conversations, sounded like preppers.

If you are friendly with the other sysop, there are many ways to link repeaters even a simple talkback repeater could be used with permission, I like 2.4 or 5.8 ghz Nanobeam for point to point. But if you do not have LOS, maybe two UHF yagi's for the link. I know some have used the Internet for the link, but seems to break the rules on not interfacing with telephone system. a repeater can get real expensive especially with a link. sometimes there is a much simpler solution that matches then need.

If you chose any Baofeng radio, you can not legally operate on FRS since FRS has a 1/2 watt power limit. GMRS should be no problem with a 50 maximum. also keep in mind higher power seldom equates better coverage. Height of antenna has far more impact than power output. lastly not a single Baofeng/Pofung radio carries Part95 certification, Many consider this Cert. necessary to operate on GMRS legally. Take your time and chose wisely.

you could use a scanner, to efficiently scan the entire GMRS/FRS/MURS bands. I am sure Alaskans are not all Ham lic. yet I know they use radios for point to point comms as well as community announcements. Don't be surprised if you find more unlicensed than licensed users. Not an issue I would push in Alaska. Yes, with a strategically located mountain top repeater, You and other licensed users could achieve hundreds of miles of point to point coverage.

for a portable scanner I have a Bearcat 125AT, not real fast, but scans limited GMRS channels fast enough for my needs. operates on 2 AA battery or car/home cord. bout 120 dollars.

My duplexor came with LMR400 jumpers. I see no issue other than lack of flexibility during install and maintenance.

since radio has non removable antenna, you will have best luck outside and way up high. When i played with these radios I climbed up onto the roof and could get local repeater, but sounded tinny and cheap. took them back and got much better radio with removable antenna.

I also own a Uv5r and it is 4yrs old, it has been submerged in water dropped and run over by a truck, has had antennas broken off and left in the sun for hours. Still works perfectly. I have a friend who also has one, his was flooded by water running down the feedline, still works like new. Output power matches original test no splatter on adjacent channels. just a few days ago, it was dropped at a shell station, we went back and found the 50 dollar BF radio, If it was gone, I have a drawer full of replacements. I can not be trusted with a 400 or 500 dollar HT, some of my friends are even worse. I see no quality issues with BF, just the lack of certification.

I am a mixed fan of BNC connectors, but I don't think that's your issue, either you bumped the duplexor, or that coil is resonating
