If you want to talk to strangers you need a repeater-capable radio. But here is Bay Area repeaters are closed/private anyway, so maybe it's moot. Only open repeater I'm aware of is BARN-R1, and it's far and behind the mountain ridge. I can't open it from Livermore with handheld, although I can open it with my mobile radio, but signal reports are not great. Airwaives are busy, though, especially on weekends. Somebody always talking on GMRS around lake Del Valle, where there is no cell service. Rancher kids, hiking buddies, fishermen on water, etc. That's how I use my radios: family communications on camping/hiking trips. GMRS is mostly used as utility tool, and if you want to be able to make random contacts get your HAM ticket. There are number of popular busy HAM repeaters around this area.

Good to hear you are getting back into the game. I will be rootin for ya. Yes, it looks as  if our uninvited visitors have reprogrammed and or moved along. We are in our heat and rainy season, so I am prepared they may have just left the area for cooler weather, we will have to see. Will be awesome having your input here at MyGMRS, Best regards mate...

This past weekend at field day the local club held testing as usual. Several there encouraged me to test to upgrade. My response was I didn't feel comfortable yet as a general to upgrade. Several basically it will show you how the test is. They know I've been going over the pool questions. I just didn't think knowing the questions was good enough. A few of the older guys gave me the knowing approval over my not taking the test. Outside were others setting up field day ops with the portable tower and I hear one of the "extras" saying the plug doesn't match my radio (n connector). What do I do? I kept my mouth shut as im just a general... when do you people think it is right to upgrade? Let's not go the code no code route..

Try search string, :programing 2 way radio for GMRS

Also try searching :common radio acronyms

Consider watching "Youtube" videos with the same or similar search strings.

Last week I actually had a Walmart employee (he seems to monitor/greet customers on the way in and retrieves shopping carts outside) and he seen my handheld on my belt. He said politely, "You know, you don't actually need a license?" he uses a Baofeng B6 for the job site and was looking for an upgrade, mostly because the other employee's take his battery's / charger (they're compatible) I've seen other employee's inside using some Motorola's. I didn't question him what frequencies he or his team uses (although I think I recall hearing employee's on FRS/GMRS 5 one day) He seemed nice, so, I just went along with it and stayed friendly. That is kind of a downer about that announcement, though. You technically don't for FRS, but, I feel that answer wasn't as clear. I don't like promoting those radio's and people get the idea that they can use any channel. Reminds me of three kids that kept swapping channels earlier for hours. They even got on the REACT team, as I was monitoring that as well. On an understanding note, though, I can't fault it much. I feel that It's nice to have a couple unlicensed services. My grandmother for example is ill and elderly and simply has no interest in radio's or studying and paying big for a license. FRS is great for that purpose (close range, of course) and with my GMRS license, I can authorize her for GMRS use. Perhaps if the licensed and unlicensed services were split into separate radios, it could limit the unlicensed from using licensed services. And clearly printing on the outer packaging to highlight that rather than slipping it into some fine print in the back of the manual.

Edit: Dang, they're actually still playing around. I keep hearing them mumble and using those call buttons that produces a ring.

for listen only just enter the output frequency of the repeater into your radio, and listen away. 462.*** there is nothing else to it. as you listen and study you will learn how to make the hand set repeater ready, with tones and an off set. When you do get permission or are ready, Please do not kerchunk the repeater over and over. Please do, identify your self and ask to conduct a radio check. Best of luck.

The characteristics of the wire used and environmental conditions present will affect the physical lengths of the radiators needed to achieve the best SWR curve.  If you build the antenna, be sure to allow extra radiator length to compensate for wire characteristics and factors such as ground quality and “capacitance” caused by proximity to trees or buildings.  The extra wire can be left dangling at the radiator ends and trimmed as needed to achieve the best SWR curve.

frequency, PL/CTCSS or DSC/DPL tone, Offset +/-, MHZ of offset ie: +5000 for GMRS, There are many tone combinations for repeater access, the radio manufacture can not pre-program for every repeater possibility.

    Hello Dimitry,
I have had a similar radio to your GMRS V-1 by BTech for some time now and what I have found that works for me is to purchase a programming cable from the manufacturer. (A word of caution, there does exist many after market programming cables that are somewhat cheaper but it is my advice to go with the cable sold by BTech or Baofeng.)

Once you get this programming cable, the next thing to do is go to Miklor.com and download their free CHIRP software and open it up. Once this is done, first thing to do is upload the firmware from the radio. Now you can make the necessary changes you want or need for your area and download it into the radio.

Another word of advice, I am sure you know by now that you can only receive outside the GMRS spectrum. I would highly recommend programming the seven NOAA weather radio frequencies and perhaps local ham radio repeaters BUT, be cautious about programming in public safety frequencies (police, fire, EMS, etc.). Laws vary from state to state and even within some communities as to whether or not it is legal to listen or monitor those frequencies while walking around or using your radio that way inside of a vehicle.

(There are legal ways to avoid having that problem, if it exists where you live or work, such as getting a ham radio license or joining your local CERT organization.)

Hope this helps you and enjoy your new radio.

    Best wishes,

knock it back to 20 or 25 watts or you WILL be replacing caps and finals in the pa. Set the repeater on about 10 watts and use it for an exciter. It was not made for a full blown repeater, just a  portable one.

What's confusing is I used to be able to talk for at least 30 minutes with out any problems and that was with an older, lower capacity battery. The issue seemed to show up after the two Motorola's were programmed this last time. We added some frequencies, checked the power output to a dummy load, and also checked the frequency alignment. Everything looked good. I'm wondering if the CDM 1550 LS+ series has an internal adjustable set point for the low voltage alarm? Maybe that inadvertently got changed to a higher voltage number. Does that sound reasonable?

I have also been considering what you are suggesting with a duel battery set up, more so for emergencies than just my convenience.

I have NOAA alerts on my repeater, 45 second time out, just because that's all you really need to get the point of the alert. I concur that the VHF is sufficient, but we don't keep weather radios in the vehicles or on our person at all times, so it's convenient and good for safety sake, especially in the middle of 1,000 acres.

Baofeng/Pofung makes good solid radios, this particular radio is designed to be GMRS Part 95 certified and I believe is a very wise choice for a beginner.

Interconnection, Wireline and PSTN references are all in rules that are pre-dating internet. They all pertain to switched telephone services and dial up connections voice audio.

They do not pertain to point to point leased lines (that do not run through a telco switch) and they do not pertain to internet. Period.

I worked with all this stuff, in commercial radio, back in the early 90's when only 1 guy in the neighborhood had dial up internet!

There is no use debating HOW the internet is delivered or routed, it doesn't matter, internet is not PSTN in any form.

I think the usual "stock antennas are junk" is kind of overrated. It's always nice to upgrade with better quality accessories over stock accessories, but, I think a lot of people overlook how well some stock accessories actually are. I've done some testing with various Nagoya antennas and various Baofeng antennas (stock antennas from different Baofeng models) and there was little to no difference. I feel the stock antenna actually receives better on FM broadcast than Nagoya and transmits and receives a bit better on UHF than Nagoya, with the exception that I did get an additional five feet distance with the 771 and 774 and the 805-3 seems to be closest to the stock antennas with FM broadcast unless the 771R or 774 is completely retracted. However, this is with my terrain and comparing with Nagoya. Perhaps a different make such as Comet or Diamond would provide better results to compare and different terrain. I've tried the stock antennas in basements and metal wall constructed buildings, and they seem fine, at least for the needs compared with Nagoya.
