  1. Whoever can actually explain how any of this applies to Dual watch to scanning FRS radio, wins.
  2. This video goes over all the different settings on a UV-5R. The UV-9G has many/most of the same settings:
  3. My favorite "adventuring" radio! this is great news!
  4. are you sure you're transmitting in wide-band?
  5. This is the obvious answer.. Everyone knows that CB Ch19 is the unofficial official road channel so it makes sense that GMRS Ch19 would be the same.. Someone should go on Youtube and decree it, to make it official..
  6. Yes - The XS20G is an SOC (not SuperHet) - Source: The owner of the only XS20G authorized dealership in the United States - he also designed/spec'd the radio for manufacturing. I too have a KG905G (a few), KG-935G (several), KG-805G (a couple), multiple KG-1000Gs, and some KG-UV9s... and I can tell NO difference between the XS20G or 935G (both SOC) and all the other Superhet radios - they all receive the same, from everything I can see/hear and from reports from human ears, they transmit the same - the signal sensitivity , although maybe different on a scope - i am not able to perceive any difference.. and the squelch,as best as I can tell, are the same.. ...However... i CAN tell a (HUGE) difference in the $30-$50 SOC radios (Retevis, BoofWang, etc) and any of the Wouxun SOC or SuperHet radios - even the BTech 50X1 - huge difference in receive sensitivity and even bigger difference in squelch operation.
  7. I do not believe that radio is FCC Part 95 approved, so technically, it is not permitted.. However, the FCC has stated publicly that people using that type of older radios on GMRS, as long as they are remaining within the spirit of the rules (power limits, , etc), will not be singled out..or bothered. Based on the FCC's track-record (all public in the FCC enforcement database) they have N E V E R issued a warning, citation, fine, jail-term, or death-sentence for anyone simply using this type (or any type) of radio on GMRS frequenices.
  8. Just for info - I have tested and used dozens of antennas, and the one I now use on my Jeep is the Midland MXT26A GMRS antenna. It has 6db gain, and right out of the bag it had a near-perfect 1.1:1 SWR so no cutting was required. And, oh yah, it transmits just fine
  9. If a tree falls in the woods, does it make a sound? If the FCC writes a regulation that it never enforces, does it even matter? If someone wins an argument on the internet, does anyone care?
  10. I have had both an MXT500 and MXT575 for months.. But.. i'm not allowed to speak of them until the official release date, which so far, has not been confirmed by Midland...
  11. I don't usually like to post videos, but this video was inspired by many comments that I have read here and in a few ham-radio forums.
  12. Pretty sure Crestline .575 is not linked.. If it was you would be seeing everyone complaining about the non-english long-talkers on it all day with out ever ID'ing with a callsign.
  13. Yes, you should be concerned..That behavior is not by design. Had you been transmitting a lot? ie; was the radio hot?
  14. Yah, that is a 3rd-party cable and software package - the 3rd party charges more, thats why BTWR charges more for this option. Most people buy the $15 cable from BTWR, use the free software that comes with the radio, and call it a day.. Those of us that have programmed hundreds of radios have learned (the hard way) to stay far away from those cheap $11 cables...
  15. I dont know what cables you are talking about, but I got my programming cable from BTWR for $15 - anyone can, right here: https://www.buytwowayradios.com/wouxun-pco-001.html FWIW, i have also had about 5 of those $11 amazon cables and they either didnt work at all, or stopped working after a few months... The extra $5 for a cable that is virtually guaranteed to work from BTWR is well worth it.. No voodoo or anything required on Windows or Mac.. just plug it in and it works.. Unlike your $11 junk cables.
  16. It's very simple... You need to know what channel the repeater is on, go to that channel, then go into the menus for the TX Ctcss and RX CTCSS (or dcs) and enter them, and you're done.. If you want to create a new, custom channel, it's a PITA on the radio, but super-simple, almost self-explanatory using the software - just fill in the blanks basically.
  17. I cant imagine that software being $30 better than the free Wouxun software, but, I await your notes.
  18. Seems that a lot of people are going to be disappointed when then learn that the 500 and 575 are wideband...
  19. Midland has not yet set a release date. My sources indicate it will be at least a few more weeks. The worst part of that means that I cant talk about it for at least a few more weeks!
  20. Midland has not yet announced an official release date for the 500 or 575 ... I have both.. but I'm not yet allowed to talk about them... ?
  21. I dont have my list in front of me but I think those may be Crest repeaters.. 550 is the most jammed frequency in this area.
  22. I can display a custom line on the top with my KG-935G, but I cant find that option for the XS-20G in the software...
