  1. Agreed - from actual usage/experience. The XS20G is GREAT if you will be very dusty/wet environments - and it is very small which is great if dont have a lot of room. Also a few $$ less than the 1000G
  2. I have had/used every brand of GMRS radio in my Jeep(s) and almost every model of every brand, and for Part 95 "GMRS" radios, I prefer the Wouxun KG1000G. It is a better quality radio than BTech and most (maybe all) the other brands, it outputs a full 50W, and has a remote-mount removable faceplate. Several of my off-road friends use this radio and they are all happy with it. And FYI - even though its spelled Wooks-On, it's pronounced "Ocean" .

I understand the reasoning, but this is GMRS - a huge percentage of GMRS users just turn on their radio and start talking with their group - they aren't thinking about power levels or anything else, other than "can my friend hear me" ...

This is an assumption or opinion. Around here we go full-blast all the time.
  5. As an internet legal scholar and couch-based constitutional expert, you should know that complaining about it here is not going to accomplish anything other a bunch of back and forth verbal & grammatical masturbation.
  6. Congress gave the FCC the right to get involved in local wireless communications, as well as justification to exist as an agency when they passed the Communications Act of 1934. And just FYI, complaining/arguing/chest-beating about it in an online forum wont change anything - If you really want to change/eliminate the FCC start by contacting your congressman or an attorney.
  7. For making contacts and talking anonymously with strangers, you should also look into the Grindr app for your phone.
  8. PL, CTC, CTCSS, are all the same. DP, DCS, DTC are all the same. USUALLY a DP/DTC/DCS tone is "N" (Normal) unless specified as "I" (Inverted) In your example D205N = 34 on your chart. If your radio only allows you to enter the 2 or 3 digit numbers (34) then that is what you enter on the radio. MOST radios like the KG-Q10G allow you to choose the actual CTC/DCS tone (ie; 141.3 or D023N) - you dont "enter" it, you choose it from the list in the DCS TX or RX menu setting.
  9. Did you ever get an answer? I would like to do the same thing with my listing.
  10. Parallels is great and I use it on my M1 Mac to program all my radios.. If your Mac is too old for Parallels then it will probably run Boot Camp, which lets you run Windows directly/natively on your Mac so you should check that out to see if it will work on your MacBook.
  11. This is almost certainly a Windows/comport/driver issue - do you have any other radios that work using CHIRP?
  12. I was going to castigate you for not just looking on the Retevis sales page or online user-manual to get the answer to this question, but it turns out that all they say is "GMRS" and it would be very unusual for a radio like this to not also be able to receive 2M, 70CM and more... So now I want to know the answer too! PS: Welcome to the exciting and dynamic world of radio.. If people make fun of you here its because they love you.
  13. I came here to read about Terry Sullivan, not some dumb question about a radio! Clickbait!!!!1
  14. IIRC, i never measured the power because I didnt want to break the antenna and/or i didnt have a good way to measure it off the connector. and I dont think the power was mentioned anywhere in the sales literature or documentation (that i can recall).. Since they dont brag that its a "Full 5 Watt radio" I assume it is closer to 2 or 3W, if that.
  15. Only "Some people" could over-complicate sticking a piece of wire through a wall in their desperate attempt to validate themselves..But he did a VERY good job of showing everyone how smart he thinks he is.. I for one am VERY impressed! But he's clearly not smart enough to read the room and know his audience...
  16. The 511 does not do digital texting, it has no GPS, and it is more like an FRS radio than a GMRS radio. Source: I have one.
  17. Easy! It's because the FCC says so!
  18. You are correct, you cant do it by just slapping it inline with the coax - I assumed he meant he would do it the "right" way.. But upon reflection and realizing that would cost more than the repeater, I have re-evaluated the situation. UPDATE: DO NOT TRY TO SLAP A POWER-AMPLIFIER INLINE WITH YOUR REPEATER.. IT WONT WORK. Good catch @Sshannon
  19. If you can do both, then do both. If you can only do one, then raise the antenna higher.
  20. IMO, it is important to point out that the RG-58 coax that comes with most magnet mount antennas, while not "the best" you can buy, is more than plenty 'good enough' for average, normal, GMRS users.
  21. Yes, you can do that, and nobody would care... But dont forget that the HAM version does not have "channels", so you would have to program them all as you mentioned, and also manually set & configure your repeater channels.. Not a big deal if you know/understand how to do that, but based on your question I am guessing that you may not know how. Also, as I'm sure you know, there is virtually 0 difference in farz between 8 watts and 10 watts - the only difference you will see is the battery draining faster.
  22. Generally speaking, in GMRS we dont use "tuners" .. What most of us do is use an SWR meter to cut/tune our antenna to the correct length OR, purchase a "GMRS" antenna which requires no tuning/cutting.
