Can I monitor HAM radio frequencies with a GMRS License?
OffRoaderX replied to WRWP693's topic in FCC Rules Discussion
C'mon man, dont joke around! As @Adamdaj pointed out, this is a very serious subject, i'm just waiting for his response because obviously the FCC takes these matters very seriously. -

What happens if you press the PTT on the H.A.M. bands without a amateur radio license? -

Any Tips For Someone Thinking of Getting A H.A.M. License?
OffRoaderX replied to OffRoaderX's topic in Amateur Radio (Ham)
Thank you. I was skeptical until I saw how long you've been a H.A.M., but now I am very impressed. -
No, I just know that "some people's" entire hobby revolves around finding strange men talk with, and I think Grindr is a great way for them to do that. I'm just looking out for them.

Baofeng uv-5g wont communicate with Midland 1000
OffRoaderX replied to ShaneF's question in Technical Discussion
.... ^ that... -
If you have purchased GMRS radios to 'make contacts' or to find strangers to talk with, then you have purchased the wrong type of radios, as talking with strangers and 'making contacts' is not what GMRS is intended for. It sounds like H.A.M. radio or the Grindr app might be better choices for you.
-
Wide/Narrow has nothing to do with it because that would not prevent them from transmitting/hearing each other. The issue is he is trying to transmit in frequency/VFO mode, which you cannot do on UV-5G radios.. Assuming there are no incorrect tones, putting the radio in channel/MR mode and set the correct GMRS "channel" should make everything work.

OffRoaderX replied to ShaneF's question in Technical Discussion
On the UV-5G, Channel 20 is equivalent to channel 20 - try putting them on channel 20, get all the radios at least 50 feet apart, and try again. -
Contact the seller/manufacturer and tell them to send you one that works as advertised or give you back your monies.

What's your GMRS mobile setup, and how does it work for you?
OffRoaderX replied to WRQC527's topic in General Discussion
In actual testing, compared to the larger MXTA26, the ghost antenna performs VERY well.. Surprisingly well... IF you can mount it in a good location. If any part of the ghost antenna is being blocked by parts of the truck, it works terribly.. Basically, if you can mount it on the center of the roof, its great but anywhere else, not so much. -
I use the Tram 1486 because it is not very expensive, it's relatively high-gain, and it does not look like an alien spaceship on the roof. It was also easy to trim/tune - I got 1.01:1 SWR on the first try. You should use good/decent coax, but do not listen to "some people" that will try to convince you that you MUST USE hardline or Heliax, or some other $45/ft coax. I am using LMR400, which is plenty "good enough". You should ground both the mast and the coax (using a lighting suppressor type inline ground block), but i wont get into the details about how/what to ground them to as no doubt "some people" will be starting ongoing arguments over proper grounding techniques any minute now.

Antenna question sending vs receiving
OffRoaderX replied to WRYS366's question in Technical Discussion
Adding a larger, correctly tuned and well-placed external antenna will almost always certainly perform better than the stock antenna, but depending on your terrain, and 3million other variables, you may or may not notice. With good line of sight, you might get 20 miles of farz on the radios using the stock antennas, but if you have a mountain at 21 miles, then no big antenna is going to get you 22 miles of farz. Dont overthink it.. If you are getting the farz that you need with the stock rubber ducky antennas, then use them. If you need more farz, then connect to a correctly tuned and well-placed external antenna. Queue the overly complicated, 10 paragraph responses that don't really address or answer the question: -
I dont see how using an app to find and talk with anonymous men is any different from using a ham radio to do it.. So, here you go, here is the link: https://www.grindr.com/ Hopefully i saved you the 12 seconds it would have taken you to google it yourself.

SWR Talk - 1.5swr with 1.5ref let’s talk range!
OffRoaderX replied to WRYR550's topic in General Discussion
I get 40+ miles in MY city - but how many farz you get in YOUR city depends on what is between you and your friend. Are there any big buildings, hills, mountains, trees/forests, or houses full of fat people between you and him? ..you said you're on 467...? - do you mean you are transmitting to a repeater, or you are on one of the lower channels that are restricted to low power? What exact channel are you on? -

Newbie Trying to Program UV-5G & UV-9G to Repeaters
OffRoaderX replied to WRWL358's question in Technical Discussion
It's very easy to program a repeater on a GMRS radio vs a ham radio. I always like to get started by learning how to program on the radio so I understand how it works, then when I want to program a lot of repeaters, I'll use CHIRP. Programming a repeater on a GMRS radio literally requires only ONE entry: Just select the correct repeater channel, and enter the TX/Encode CTCSS/DCS tone, and you're done. Optionally, when your ready to get fancy, you can enter the RX/Decode tone. -
GMRS is not a "hobby" GMRS IS intended for people to bring their own audience (ie; your group while off-roading) GMRS is NOT for people that "want to make contacts" It seems you have been misinformed about what GMRS is for, and what its primary purpose is. It sounds like amateur radio or the Grindr app are more of what you are looking for.
-
Probably because he knows that quite literally, he has a greater chance of winning the lottery than there is of the FCC doing anything.
-
Then the best way to make it stop is to turn the channel-knob on your radio.
-
A KrakenSDR and a couple of local angry GMRS users can usually make it stop... fairly quickly..
-
I was just using mine today and i was thinking how many people will love it, and many will not love it, very much.. I very much do not love mine because I use my HTs primarily when i'm adventuring/off-roading and I need something that I can see in the bright sunlight and that has quick/easy to use unambiguous controls.. This radio does not fill those needs. However people that love to tinker and use the radio from their couch to 'make contacts', talk on the local repeaters or learn new stuff/etc, will love it.
