University using GMRS without license...
OffRoaderX replied to WRKV917's topic in FCC Rules Discussion
Statistically (and historically) speaking, no, they wont, and anyone that actually believes that this would actually happen is either living in a made-up fantasy world or being willfully disingenuous. ...just sayin... -
You got me curious so I tested one with my AA-650: No groundplane: Min SWR 1.16:1 @ 484Mhz, SWR @462.575 = 3.0:1 With Groundplane: Min SWR 1.49:1 @466Mhz, SWR @462.575 = 1.9:1

This newly listed repeater : https://mygmrs.com/repeater/7576 Is an unauthorized copy of this repeater: https://mygmrs.com/repeater/4744 and should be removed.

Hearing digital data sounds on GMRS8
OffRoaderX replied to rockwithrick's topic in General Discussion
Based on the actual track-record of FCC enforcements since 2012, statistically speaking, they wont do anything. -
When I go off-roading I always have my mobile radio set to scan all channels. But GMRS isnt really intended to "reach out" - it is more of a person-to-person radio service and is not the best choice for finding strangers to chat with. For that, H.A.M. radio or the Grinder app are probably a better choice.

Any Tips For Someone Thinking of Getting A H.A.M. License?
OffRoaderX replied to OffRoaderX's topic in Amateur Radio (Ham)
Obviously it is an acronym because "ham" would not make any sense. H.A.M. makes more sense to anyone with a good grasp of talking english good. -
I had a 2-KG-1000G repeater setup for a while and IF i remember correctly, you have to change a setting in the menus/basically turning off the repeater functionality before you can use it as a simplex base station - but, that is based on my very unreliable 2+ year old memories.

I am assuming it's receiving noise/static? If so, There are a few possibilities: The squelch is set too low. Try turning it up to 9 There are actually signals (static/interference/bleedover/illegal digital) coming in. Try listening with another radio to see if it comes in on both or just one radio Something in your Jeep such as LEDs, PWM, ignition, or lord knows what else, is causing noise/static interference - Good luck if this is the case Something else that i'm not thinking of that the other good members here will list below
-
Most (not all, but most) repeaters will give you a "kerchunk" or squelch-tail sound after you unkey. Some may have a roger-beep. If two repeaters in the same area are using the same channel and same tones, you wont know which you're listening to unless the signals are different enough to tell them apart; ie; one might be strong, the other might be weak. Generally speaking, you will never find two nearby repeaters on the same channel with the same tones because it would be a clusterphuc. My bet is that one is out of service or its a duplicate listing. (Bonus response!) Welcome to the exciting GMRS lifestyle!

The smaller one is quite springy, but the larger one is VERY stout and VERY stiff. I would not recommend putting it on anything less than a large span of solid steel.

Hearing digital data sounds on GMRS8
OffRoaderX replied to rockwithrick's topic in General Discussion
No, but people do it all the time. Not just DMR but P25 and NXDN also. It is much annoying. -
When you are off-road, nobody is going to be monitoring CB or GMRS to save you.... If there is nobody near you listening with a radio, then yah, you wont get a response.
-
I dont know anyone else that has one.
-
Sorry... Have you contacted BTech Support to see what they have to say?
-
To actually answer the question: On all radios manufactured since 2017 all GMRS and FRS channels are the same and all GMRS radios can talk with FRS radios and visa-versa. Most mobile GMRS radios may not have some of the channels (8-14) on them, but otherwise, if you put both radios on the same channel, you can talk. Narrowband and wideband radios can talk to each other - however you may notice some volume issues; many people do not notice at all. TL;dr: You can use your FRS radios and your MXT275 without any significant/real-world issues.

Has anyone bought the NEW Baofeng GRMS UV-5R?
OffRoaderX replied to Tommy2watts's topic in General Discussion
My UV-5R GMRS flavored radio transmits fine on GMRS Ch15 and VFO 462.550 The Low/High power (#) does not work on mine in Channel mode, but does work in Frequency mode No problem connecting/programming on multiple computers - Statistically speaking, unless you know that your computer/cable works/can program other radios, this is more likely a Windows issue than a radio issue. -
Has anyone bought the NEW Baofeng GRMS UV-5R?
OffRoaderX replied to Tommy2watts's topic in General Discussion
If a Factory-Reset does not help, throw them in the trash and spend $40 on 2 new ones from Amazon - problem solved and lesson learned.. That lesson being that eBay is a den of liars and thieves. -
Any "GMRS" antenna will work. I use the Midland MXTA26 on my Jeep - an antenna like the MXTA26 will work much better than your tiny antenna, but nobody can tell you exactly how much better. Can't speak to the cold, but the radio will do fine in your summer temps as long as it has some air-flow around it.
-
...and get further away from each other - at least 50 feet..after you turn off all tones in all radios... on the Talkabouts the tones might be called sub channels or 'privacy codes'.
-
TL;dr: Kirk is both a liar AND a moron. For many of us this was obvious from the very start, but now that we've heard BOTH sides, there is no more doubt.

Youtube is probably a good place to start, but here are some basics: Channels 1-22 are listening & talking channels. There are no globally accepted channels like CB Ch9 or CB Ch19 on GMRS To communicate with others, you tell your buddy/family member, etc to put their radio on the same channel as you, get within range, push the button, then talk. If you are looking to talk with strangers as a hobby, you bought the wrong radio. To make things more confusing, GMRS repeaters share Channels 15-22, so if someone is talking on a repeater you will hear them on channels 15-22, but (generally/normally) they will only be able to hear you if you configure your radio to use that same repeater. Again, Youtube is a great place to learn everything, but when you have a specific question, this place isnt too bad.
-
Dude - give him some time.
-
You will be able to listen to the repeaters but if you want to transmit on the repeaters you will have to return them and buy repeater-capable GMRS walkie-talkies, which is just about any GMRS walki-talkie that is not made by Midland.

Has anyone bought the NEW Baofeng GRMS UV-5R?
OffRoaderX replied to Tommy2watts's topic in General Discussion
Mine works just like the non-GMRS UV-5R, except with slightly less guilt when I use it on GMRS frequencies. It is 100% the same radio with just different programming. -
He just violated his agreement.. Looks like he only has two of the new models - Youtubers with real clout will be showing all 4.
