  1. My God! The horror! Let us know if you need any help or support getting through this.. Everyone knows how hard this type of traumatic experience can be for some people..
  2. There is no need to overcomplicate this like so many here tend to do: YES - If you hear a morse code ID on simplex, that likely means there is a repeater within range NO - this does not mean the repeater is open and this does not mean that no RX/TX tones are required to use the repeater If it is a repeater you cannot use it on simplex - you will hear it, but you cannot reach/use/transmit on it via a simplex channel
  3. No.
  4. If you tell someone that over the air, unless it is a business/LMR frequency that you have paid for, you deserve snark comments. Nobody can claim that you cant use a channel.. Well, they can, but you can ignore them or laugh at them when they tell you that. Then CAN claim that you cant use their repeater, and while you should honor their request, there isn't anything they can do to stop you, and the FCC wont care, just just play nice.
  5. I dont know if they have SAR/Anyone always listening, I'll leave that up to a local to answer, but I can tell you that unless you have good line-of-sight to whoever is monitoring, or the repeater they are monitoring, it wont matter.
  6. IMO, your best option is to not go alone and take a reliable source of communication like a Garmin InReach Sat-communicator, or a new iPhone with satellite connectivity.. Otherwise, unless you have someone waiting & listening for you, and you KNOW that your radio will reach them from wherever you may be (which is doubtful), you do not have a reliable means to call for help.. Or Pizza.. Source: I have done a bit of high-temperature, long-range hiking in the desert
  7. Nevermind.
  8. I have/have used both. The form factor of the 575 is much smaller than the 500 but like @marcspaz said, the programming/capabilities are the same, so no more repeater sites than the 500. If you want a small(ish) form factor with more capabilities have a look at the KG1000G which has a removable/remote-mount faceplate and mic controls or maybe the Wouxun XS-20G.
  9. Sadly, no.. They will keep this verbalmasturbation match going on forever in their terminal attempts at proving they are the smartest one in the room.
  10. Almost 2 weeks and we still don't know who the smartest one is.
  11. The KG-1000G or XS-20G are both very good mobile radios. I had a KG1000G in both my Jeeps for a couple of years before replacing them with (MUCH more expensive) LMR type radios.
  12. My GMRS repeater is at about 1,800 feet in Southern California and covers around 40-50 miles in 3 directions on about 25 watts, but only about 1 mile in one direction because of mountains. My group had another repeater at about 5,500 feet in Southern California and it covered LAX to San Diego and Scirocco Summit on 50 watts. Line of sight and antenna height are critical.
  13. It sounds like you don't understand. When you transmit on a [GMRS] repeater you are transmitting at 5Mhz higher.. So, you are not transmitting on 462.xxx, you are transmitting on 467.xxx - and that is further away from the antenna's sweet-spot, thusly resulting in a higher SWR,
  14. Me, and 99% of the rest of the normal people in these United States do not care. That is an FCC problem, not an us problem.
  15. My TalkPod A36Plus also transmits on MURS, right out of the box.
  16. The radio works on both services at the same time already.
  17. No, but I am hoping that maybe some of the "experts" will know!
  18. It is a fully functioning ham and GMRS radio, albeit horribly/incorrectly programmed for GMRS. It can transmit on 2M, 70CM, and GMRS. The manufacturer says that you can display any one of the 256 channels on Display A, and any of the other 256 channels on Display B. The same 256 channels on two different screens does not equal 512, by my math.
  19. Does it do this on every frequency and every signal, or only some?
  20. Dont forget to discuss the merits of picking up chicks via the proper and legal use of both a quality belt-clip and a wrist-strap.
  21. Three: you didnt actually program the repeater into your radio and you are trying to reply on the simplex channel you are hearing them on.
  22. In about 2 weeks ago.
  23. Because it would be way, WAY too hight/tall and might not be stable at high speed?
  24. Uh huh.
  25. All the good YouTubers talk very slowly and deliberately.
