Jeez - you're going to give your cat cancer.

BradfordD reacted to wayoverthere in What I heard on a three day road trip... (not much)
It can be, though a speaker mic definitely helps.
I picked up a short cable (18", I believe) from amazon that has so239 on one end, and sma-m on the other (I use a sma-f adapter from signal stuff as needed). This has been working well with a mag mount nmo, on both the truck previously, and now on the beater car for ham.
    Edit:
This is the one from my Amazon history, though check the major radio retailers (DX engineering, antenna farm, etc) as they may have better connector options (depending if your radio wants sma-m or sma-f). I tried ordering the little DHT 2 pack twice....disappeared en route both times, 3rd try was what I have: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07CPVF1GG/

Wanted to take time to give an Atta Boy to Buy Two Way Radios.com. Being a Noob, I ordered the wrong thing.  Figured it out at the last second, and sent them a message to cancel my order.
Just about then, I got an email that my order was ready to ship.  NUTS!   But, lo and behold, they intercepted the shipment, canceled the order, and credited me my purchase.
Good customer service is hard to find now a days, so when it happens, I think its worth sharing.

I'm baffled by the amount of folks who think they want to re-write the rules and channels to benefit them. Until a few years ago we had 8 repeater splits and thats it. For folks above line A they lost 2 off the bat. If your talking simplex use a channel not in a repeater. Its simple.

This is a classic example of a thread going off topic.

BradfordD got a reaction from Woodsman in Anybody using "Viewshed" in Google Earth to determine repeater coverage??
Is anyone using the "Viewshed" tool in Google Earth to graphically show a repeater's coverage map?   I know the tool is limited to a 6-ish mile radius - but IF something like this tool was available on the GMRS map - it would be fantastic!
To use the tool on Google Earth, you first pin or "Placemark" the repeater location - then right-click for the Viewshed tool (you can also adjust the placemark above ground).  This shows the Line-Of-Sight all around that location...
It works great - but the Viewshed radius is too limited for my uses.

I don't usually like to post videos, but this video was inspired by many comments that I have read here and in a few ham-radio forums.

BradfordD got a reaction from wayoverthere in Newbie. I just got a signal hit from a repeater channel - NOW WHAT?
I received a response (and an okay to use) from "MNT TOP 2 VALLEJO" and it appears to be the right repeater.   Was able to do a radio check with my SO and we both were able to TX and RX on it!
Distance 23.44 miles - RX and TX from inside my home.
I've added that as a specially named channel to my 935 with the frequencies and tones - leaving the original repeater channel "un-modified"...
To find the repeater - I did a search from the MyGMRS map and identified five possible repeaters operating in my area at the same frequency and sent the each a similar email...  Got several responses - but this one "lines up" with the tones.

Also just received my Call Sign.  For my first HT, I've ordered a KG-935G  - should be here 10/8...
Because the 935 shares the same battery AND charger as the 905, my future #2 will most likely be the KG-905G - but would like to see how well the 935 works before ordering.

Man... it kills me to see people keep saying that GMRS is not a hobby but Amateur Radio is.  It's like people forget the meaning of words and how subjective they can be.

First, I have to say, GMRS and FRS use can be a hobby. That includes rag-chew and anything else you can legally do on GMRS.  GMRS can also be utilitarian.  What makes it a hobby or utility is how YOU use it.  That's it.  Nothing else.

I would wager to state the opinion that Amateur Radio is far more utilitarian than GMRS would ever be.  Just because you can legally conduct business on GMRS and FRS doesn't take away that fact that for many private owners, it's purely an entertainment device.  It also doesn't take away the utility value of Amateur Radio.

Amateur radio is called such because of non-commercial exchanges, and no other reason.  The organization and practice of amateur radio has led the world for more than a century with new inventions of methods for moving data, messaging and voice comms.  There is wireless experimentation, self-training in electronics engineering, private recreational use, and emergency communications.  If that isn't less a hobby and more utilitarian, I don't know what is.  Radiosport, contesting and rag-chewing is just a small part of Amateur Radio culture.  And again, what makes it a hobby or a service is how YOU use it.

HAVING BOTH MODELS THE KG-935G OUT PERFORMS MY FOUR KG-905G'S WHICH HAVE THE STOCK ANTENNA AND THE 15" NAGOYA'S.  DON'T BOTHER WITH THE KG-905.
