  1. Depending on what permissions you have set. In my case its only being used by me and my buddy if either of us are out of range or don't have a reliable signal. The repeater we're on is about 15 miles away in a rough spot putting out 40 watts, its not the highest spot in the area. I'm within range most of the time, but for those rare times him or I am not, we still have a way to communicate with the users on it. The Zello Channel is passworded as well as Zelect+ were only Admins, Mods, or Trusted Users can talk and listen. So its pretty secure as far as that goes.

    Yeah....that's true.

  2. Does anyone know if it's legal to link GMRS repeaters to the Zello app and create a channel? I'm starting to see owners all over doing that here in the USA and Canada. However I do think it's a good idea. If it's mainly ment to be used by family members it's great to stay in touch when out of range and in the event of anemergency.

Well, there is a risk of an unlicensed person getting on the zello channel and using the repeater.

  3. Honestly, this not a particularly useful answer. Why do I say that? Simple. If you don't know the bloody FCC ID (i.e. "Grantee Code" + "Product Code" there's just no way to find the records...

...this is like giving someone a fishing pole, and line, but leaving out the hook and bait. That man is going to stay hungry.

It was assumed the OP has one. It can also be googled....but here it is: 2AGND-GMRS-VI

  4. Jwilkers can you post the source of your comment that the V1 is only allowed 2 watt output? And also the source that the V1 5watt application was denied. It would be appreciated if both can be posted here. Thanks

I no longer post sources, as people still don't believe me after I do the hard work of researching for them. What you need to do is Google "FCC ID search" and then enter the FCC ID of your radio where it asks for it. You can then display the FCC Grant. It is all there for everyone to read. If you are diligent enough in your research, you can even find the correspondence from the FCC rejecting the radio's 5 watt application and their order for them to not market this radio, if it exceeds 2 watts.

I'm not attacking...I'm simply reporting what is public information.

Responsible *licensees* welcome such 8ninformation, in order to assist them in operating legally.

  5. I'm hunting no one. I'm stating the truth. Anyone can go read FCC correspondence.

  6. Either that or he was checking for any spurious emissions on vhf. If that radio can be unlocked, then it further violates it's FCC certification. You may as well use a Baofeng uv82

  7. Good point. Let me also just place a comprehensive Part 90 line item here for consideration...

    47CFR90.407: Emergency Communications >

The licensee of any station authorized under this part may, during a period of emergency in which the normal communication facilities are disrupted as a result of hurricane, flood, earthquake or similar disaster, utilize such station for emergency communications in a manner other than that specified in the station authorization or in the rules and regulations governing the operation of such stations. The Commission may at any time order the discontinuance of such special use of the authorized facilities.

Now, let's look at the Part 95 line item that is worded in much less specific detail >

47CFR95.114: Managing a GMRS system in an emergency >

(a ) The stations in a GMRS system must cease transmitting when the station operator of any station on the same channel is communicating an emergency message (concerning the immediate protection of property or the safety of someone's life).

(b ) If necessary to communicate an emergency message from a station in a GMRS system, the licensee may permit:

(1 ) Anyone to be the station operator (see §95.179); and

(2 ) The station operator to communicate the emergency message to any radio station.

    _____________________________________________________________________

Has anyone ever received a ruling from the Commission regarding section (2 ) above and the words "any radio station" ?

"Any radio station" under the rule part in which the phrase appears. For part 95, it would be any other part 95 GMRS station. Service rules do not cross services.

  8. You need an external antenna, tuned for GMRS...on both radios. The rubber ducks are poor radiators.

  9. Have you tried e-mailing the owner through MyGMRS? On the main site you will find a national list of repeaters and each has an e-mail so you can contact the owner. Make sure your logged into MyGMRS and you may see the tone is listed. If anything I would try the travel tone.

The mygmrs database is woefully inaccurate at times, since there is no way to correct or remove invalid data. Maybe the OP could postal mail the owner, providing contact info.

  10. That probably is the smallest (at this time at least). There's no mention of the number of channels, nor of programmability for that matter.

Also, it is rated at 1 watt, but FRS can be no more than 0.5 watt to be legal for Part 95A.

FRS is part 95B, not 95A. 95A is GMRS.

  11. I just got my GMRS license last week. When I applied, the form said the fee was now $80, however, when I checked out with my credit card, the charge was only $70. I guessing they may be raising the price again shortly, and the database hasn't caught up yet.

Likely a typo. I've seen nothing indicating further fee increases.

  12. A little bit of help here folks. Does anyone have the link to change my address with the FCC for my GMRS license. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Just log into your FCC ULS account and make the change.

  13. I just got a pair. Factory software is ok. Not a lot going on with these radios. Just don't switch to a channel with nothing programmed....you'll get a loud, annoying tone , until you switch channels. They really aren't a bad deal.
