The fees for a GMRS license have been reduced.Thank you for the information. One issue though, when I got my license at first, I payed $90 online through the FCC site, even when most people commented that it was only $70. Are there any other charges attached to this that I did not know at the time and that's why the extra charges?

Bear in mind, use of a uv-5r is illegal on GMRS and MURS. They do not have part 95 certification.I have a dozen of the Baofeng UV-5R radios that are programmed for all of the GMRS and MURS frequencies, as well as the 2-meter and 70-cm ham frequencies. They are easily programmable via computer and are dirt cheap on Amazon.
One thing I like about them is that they have an alphanumeric display so instead of having the frequency displayed, it can show the name of the channel or repeater, ie: GMRS 1, MURS 3, HON REP, etc. Or you can opt to have the frequency displayed if you prefer.

DNT most certainly requires a license. Either a commercial license or an Amateur Radio license.

Well there really aren't even any GMRS bubble packs out there that even come close to 2 watts. Looking at Fcc data, most bubblepacks are below 1 watt. The industry has had the opportunity to make radios up to 5 watts; but none have done So. We will see, I guess.

Priority mail is my favorite. 2 to 3 days. Beats UPS or FedEx imho.

The original 14 channel frs only radios did have those channels as narrow band. When they created frs, they dropped the frs channels in and between some pre existing GMRS frequencies.Okay, I see. Anyone know why those channels are shared?
When the New regulations take effect, sometime in the coming couple months, all 22 channels on bubble pack radios will be legal for frs users with a 2 watt limit. Frs users will be able to use the wide band channels.

Well those channels transmit in wide band, which is GMRS only. FRS only permits narrow band use under current Rules.I thought channels 1-7 only required a GMRS license if being used above the legal FRS power limit considering those channels are FRS/GMRS shared and a lot of "bubble pack" radios have low/high power to select on those channels to comply?

The Miklor site has a good explanation of the chirp squelch adjustments. The factory thresholds generally need tweaking. Suggested values are presented.

Not sure about that.

It goes into effect 30 days after being published in the federal register. I think equipment must be compliant in 180 days.According to info on RR, the R&O was minimally discussed and passed as published.
Now we just have to see when it goes into effect. I am going to fix the programming in my radios of .650 and .700 now since we'll be above Line A in the near future. Yippee!

You cannot register unless you have a GMRS license.

Reading into it more....I reverse my previous statement.I think if they meant for it to be legal, they would say "operate" instead of "Control". Seems to me, linking would be illegal.

I believe GMRS regs require a 15 minute ID interval.

They are only part 95 approved for 2 watts. Their higher power grant was dismissed.I'm measuring output power around 2 watts on low power, and about 3.5 watts on high. I get a similar reading with my two UV82's on the same (GMRS) frequencies. The UV82's have 2 watts on low but have 4.75 watts on high on amateur frequencies. So I assume, that the GMRS-V1 is just a dumbed-down UV82, they could have at least tweaked the output power for GMRS freqs.

Yeah.. Allow users to easily mark a repeater as out of service. Are you looking ot change the website or the forums ? I think there is a real need for the website to be able to be updated with inaccurate info (old repeater sites). As for the forum I think its good. I'll be honest I come here for GMRS only. I go to RR for ham or commercial stuff. Keeping somewhat on a single topis is good and think there is good balance here.

The uv5r series is hit or miss. Some earlier versions had poor audio. Being designed around a commercial model, the microphone circuit isn't very hot, to prevent picking up background noise.I have a uv 5r v2+, have had a few people saying audio is very poor, trying to figure if its the radio or what

Yeah....that's true.Depending on what permissions you have set. In my case its only being used by me and my buddy if either of us are out of range or don't have a reliable signal. The repeater we're on is about 15 miles away in a rough spot putting out 40 watts, its not the highest spot in the area. I'm within range most of the time, but for those rare times him or I am not, we still have a way to communicate with the users on it. The Zello Channel is passworded as well as Zelect+ were only Admins, Mods, or Trusted Users can talk and listen. So its pretty secure as far as that goes.

Well, there is a risk of an unlicensed person getting on the zello channel and using the repeater.Does anyone know if it's legal to link GMRS repeaters to the Zello app and create a channel? I'm starting to see owners all over doing that here in the USA and Canada. However I do think it's a good idea. If it's mainly ment to be used by family members it's great to stay in touch when out of range and in the event of anemergency.

Data communications are, however, allowed on MURS.

There is a new family on one of the shared frequencies. That isn't a big deal. All I've heard recently. Fortunately, I rarely listen to those...they lean on the call tone too much.
