My radio of choice is the BTECH GMRS-20V2.
Fully Programmable channels with unlimited flexibility.

I do. If I want to converse with strangers, that's what the amateur bands are for.

The uv5r is not fcc certified for gmrs use and is therefore illegal on GMRS.

Fcc regulations have the power of law behind them. It's called the Communications Act.It pretty much says the only way to have any regulations have the power of law behind them is for the legislature to pass the bill and send it to be signed by the president. That the administrative state cannot make regulations, enforce them, be judge, jury and prosecutor like they currently do.

I use a 20 watt radio as my home radio. Works great. Power does not need to be 50 watts to be effective

No. The reason being that it's illegal for one radio to be used on the amateur bands and GMRS.

A true factory reset requires loading in the programming file that was installed on the radio. You should always download from a new radio and save it away for situations such as this.

Many folks, however, actually believe the actual watts increase. I was trying to clarify thar. I consider your answer above to be valid. That is true, but doesn’t matter. The “effective” radiated power (ERP) is the product of the power input to the antenna, times the gain relative to a half-wave dipole.

I see the FCC requires transmitters be Part 95 compliant, at least to be sold/labeled for GMRS use. I also see where the FCC limits power to 50w - but I do not see where the amplifier must be Part 95 certified.
Common sense suggests that if the radio is compliant and the power does not exceed 50w, it’s a non issue.
Regardless, are you a Junior FCC Agent? If not, I fail to see why you would care…..
You answered your own question. An amplifier is a transmitter which requires FCC certification.
I care because I don't want GMRS to turn into 27 Mhz. There are too.many CBers already on GMRS trying to ruin it.

The FCC is always right. Mostly.....The FCC must be wrong

Broken linkHere’s what the FCC says:

There are no more watts emitting from the antenna. A 25 watt signal is still.25 watts, regardless of antenna design. Gain just indicates how that power is used.I am assuming he means you aren't getting more actual "watts" from gain which is true. That's why it's called "Effective" Radiated Power and not True Radiated Power.

Negative. See the first reply to my comment. His explanation is spot on.That’s completely wrong. To calculate ERP you take the RF power input to the antenna and apply the gain.

Gain does NOT increase your ERP!I found this calculator searching around the internet. The only thing is minimum baseline is LMR-400 cable. I was hoping it would go down to RG58 so you could make comparisons.
https://www.antennas.ca/calc_ERP.htm
My little system with 6.4 watts out, 50' LMR400 to an antenna with 7.2dBi of gain radiates and ERP of 24.5 watts.

There are no Part 95 certified amplifiers for gmrs; therefore illegal.

You don'tI'm trying to register as a member but it wants a US call sign.
I'm in Canada and don't need one here.
Can I still join or is this site strictly for Americans?

You were just told you aren't allowed to. That radio has no modifications available. Not asking if I'm "allowed", I want to know if there's a hack (Mars/Cap mod, unlock, whatever you want to call it)to be ABLE to transmit on 8-14 and on VHF/MURS frequencies?

The FCC doesn't assign the FCC ID and certify the radio. The testing labs do. The test report goes on file with the FCC.- "illegal"? No..
- Not complaint with FCCs regulations? Maybe.. But, the FCCs certified the radio sooooo..
- Does the FCCs care? According to the FCCs' lack of enforcement, No
- Do any normal people care? No
The FCC has later gone and pulled certification on some radios that were later found to be illegal.
