  1. Those Radio Shack FRS mobile units might date back to the time after channels 8-14 were added, but before the first seven channels were allowed more than half a watt, so they could be half a watt on all fourteen channels. The commission might have added their mobile restriction with that model in mind. I do not remember the exact chronology of rule changes.
Frs had 14 channels and .5 watts from day one. Just some early radios only had a limited number of channels. Frs never allowed more than half a watt......until the recent rule change.

  2. I leave my roger beeps turned on. It doesn't trouble me, and I find it helpful when other unfamiliar folks are on the same channels since I can easily tell they are not addressing my group as their tones sound different than ours. It's the same argument as a commercial on a radio station; if you don't like it, change the channel.
Just be careful.....Roger beeps are "good buddy beeps" to truck drivers. You may find yourself the recipient of an invite to a rest area men's room for a romantic interlude

Everyone in our GMRS group uses MDC so we know who is talking and/or what radio they are on.

Does it actually display their call sign?  Just curious.....if there is something to this.  At any rate, reading replies to my comment has educated me a bit and I see that MDC is likely used in important ways.

  4. Seems like a nice radio.

Wonder if they will put firmware update out for the v1.

Personally, I have 2x of the v1s and they do the job. So I won't be upgrading. Now if they charge me like $15 for a firmware upgrade (which I hope they have but don't charge for) I would consider it.

They radio it is based on always has been rock solid for ham use, for at me atleast.

Can't. The V1 has a "write once" firmware. Once burned into the chip, it's there forever.

  5. Just remember, that as predicted in the proclamation video, "some people" will always and forever spew reasons why Ch19 (any channel, actually) is not "the right choice", and will argue about it as they have for years, accomplishing nothing.. Those people are not invited to join with the rest of us normal people on Ch19..  They can go talk to themselves on some other channel..

My name is Queen Randy and I approve this message.
Actually, there is another channel that has been in place for decades. 462.675 pl 141.3 has been the recognized travel channel for decades. Many repeaters are here, on this frequency/tone.

It would have been a good idea to do your homework before all this. All you are doing is creating confusion.

  6. So...the btech isn't holding steady numbers...started at 51 watts on 462.650, and slides downward as I transmit. SWR is solid 1:1 into a Midland 5/8 wave whip.
Those rebranded QYT radios are famous for that. Take underpowered finals "overclocked" for lack of a better term and drive them to 50 watts. Pair that with a very inefficient cooling system and you are looking for trouble. I've got a similar btech amateur rig and I lost 70cm power output completely.

  7. Your output power is much lower than it should be; my understanding is that the RT97 has a 10w PA, but since you have fairly high losses when you put those Jesai duplexers at a 5mhz split they rate them to 5w out (they advertise the amateur one at 10watts… with a 10mhz split)
if you’re seeing 700mw forward, and if that Surecom is halfway accurate (they’re usually at least in the ballpark) I’m wondering if your duplexer is poorly tuned, hooked up backwards, or otherwise defective. It’d be worth putting that meter between the low port and transmitter port in the repeater and seeing what your output is there. Is there a high/low power setting in the software that might be messing with things?
Or a blown final and the driver is providing the output.

  8. I have it on good authority that TWO new GMRS radios will be released in the next few months that have a quick-road-channel/Home button, pre-programmed to Ch19, which many use as the official road channel for GMRS..
"Some people" will disagree/whine/complain about Ch19, so they dont have to use it - they can talk to themselves on some other channel that nobody knows about.
Actually, what people refer to as channel 20, has been the travel channel for decades. There is also a designated pl tone. Many open repeaters use this frequency and tone.

Only this "new breed" and some lunatic YouTube er are calling for 19. Personally, I prefer to talk to the old guard anyways.

  9. Things got stupid because there was no accountability or meaningful enforcement action.

Years ago I went round and round with a number of people on the “rec.radio.cb” news group. There was a hard core group who had no regard for FCC rules, couldn’t care less who was interfered with etc. Because of the lack of FCC licensing and no real enforcement they felt “entitled” to do whatever they wanted and had no fear of repercussions. A few of them were the most narcissistic people you would have the miss fortune to ever meet.

Yeah. I was on that group too. Did the same.

  10. A few years ago, I moved to the inner city of my hometown after many years of farm life in the country. I saw these gigantic antennae with spiral bases on these cars and vans around the hood. Naive me got excited and asked if they were amateur operators, innocently hoping to strike up a conversation about their rigs. They got downright mean, vulgar, and in some cases threatening for simply asking that one question. After a while, I realized these were chowder-heads running high wattage on CB. Mornings and sometimes in the evenings, their ear raping interference comes through my computer speakers and my headset when playing video games. It is super annoying.

ETA: These guys know they are causing massive interference. They simply don't care for anyone but themselves.
Yeah. Still at it. They run their overpowered inbred radios and make local communications impossible.

Here is the latest reply from Nora at Radioddity offering you a $10 refund; respond to the email address that I send you by PM:

She sent me a reminder email today looking for a reply.

I actually got the radio from the Tidradio folks.  Got it for free, so I'm not out anything.  Didn't get it from Radiooddity.

  12. Did you buy it from Radioddity?
Since the responded to me failing to provide an update tool:

If so, contact them ans see if they will swap it for one with the updated firmware
Got it from the Tidradio people on Amazon. They are clueless on firmware. They've since taken them off Amazon, due to rather scathing reviews.

Just for giggles, and in the true "hacker" tradition, I went to that link and downloaded the "programming software" for the UV-5X (setup.exe) even though I do not own the UV-5X:

It installs as PRG-P51UV-FCC-V1.0 and when you run it, it allows you to make those changes that the so-called "firmware upgrade" fixed, such as Wide vs Narrow, change CTCSS tones, etc.

Try it; I think you will like it!

It doesn't allow a high/low power adjustment though

  14. Can you be more specific as to which issues remains a problem for you?
Cannot set pl tone from front panel. Cannot set hi/low power from front panel. Cannot select wide/narrow (although this one isn't important) from the front panel.

  15. I had been playing around with settings and repeater tones and decided to do a reset.  I apparently mistakenly assumed it would do like my Radioddity DG25G and just reset factory defaults.  Now all I see are frequencies starting with 144.xxxx and no GMRS programming.
Did I wipe it out?  What do I need to do to restore factory settings?  Unfortunately, I don't have a Windows PC, so if I have to reprogram with the Wouxun software, I'll have to find a friend to help.
    Any help would be appreciated!
To restore factory settings, you must download and install a factory image. As always, it is recommended to always upload a factory image to your computer and save it away. A computer is quite obviously required in this case.
