UHF GMRS/FRS should move towards a better spectrum utilization mechanism at this point, implement something along the lines of DSSS or FHSS which will allow those 22 channels to be used by thousands of people at once and any given user will never know someone else is talking.
Doesn't that defeat the purpose of GMRS/FRS? I bought my radios to stay in touch with family and friends during outings, and that wouldn't work too well if we never knew if someone else was talking.

Well, Katy at BaofengTech recommended the G version, I believe I'll grab that one.

Never mind, I see you ship next business day, very nice!

I found out from Katy @ Baofengtech that the newer UV-72G is the old broadband UV-72. The new UV-72 is more ham tuned.
Good to know, as I am currently torn between purchasing one or the other for GMRS!

be sure to keep blank lines between categories
That's a great tip, I didn't think of that. Thank you!

Hi all, I am looking for opinions not hard facts (gasp!) in regards to the Nagoya UT-72 and UT-72G antennas. I will be mounting the antenna to my car roof to pair with a Retevis RA25 GMRS mobile radio. My primary concern is GMRS rx/tx, but it would be nice to have decent rx for local 130-139 MHz (fire, police, etc.) for my enjoyment. I will not tx on any HAM bands, and I don't care if I can rx NOAA stations. I have a NA-771G on my HT, and I am pleased with the rx on UHF/VHF and tx on GMRS, so I was thinking the UT-72G would work best for my mobile install. Thoughts?

Be aware that the Radioddity DB-20G and the Anytone AT-779UV can use each others programming software and code plugs interchangeably.
But the Retevis Ra-25 apparently must use its own programming software and code plugs generated from its software.
Yep, I don't think that will present an issue, I got very familiar with the Retevis software yesterday

I have on order the Retevis RA25 (DB-20G aka AnyTone AT-779UV). Going to pair it with a Nagoya UT-72G.
That is the exact setup I am considering, how well does it work for you?

I travel though many states and want to be able to have emergency communication while traveling and at home.
I'm guessing a cell phone (or even satellite phone) is not a viable option?

Just wondering how long it takes to ship merchandise from the myGMRS store to California?

I'll suggest using the option to disable TX on those channels (hit the >> for the individual channel(s) in the software to get into individual channel settings) to prevent any accidental key ups
Great tip, I was just browsing the software (which I tend to do before purchasing anything, maybe I'm a nerd) and I think I won't have any issues.

If your local public safety is with the 136-174 or 400-470 (or 480, I forget the max offhand) range, it CAN scan through them.
Very cool, the local stuff I listen to is generally 150-160 MHz. Thank you for the answer.

I found a great deal on a Retevis RA25, but for those of you that have experience with this or the DB20-G, can it do the following? I would like the ability to tune/scan one channel to GMRS channels, and another to local police/fire for my listening interest. My handheld Baofeng UV-9G can do this easily, can the mobile radios I mentioned also do this?
-
One more thing I didn't consider: perhaps I am too distant? My UV-9G has a Nagoya NA-771G antenna, but I am also trying from the ground floor of my house, and there probably is poor line of sight and also obstructions. I'll try again at a better (higher, clearer) location. Thanks for the ideas everyone!

Unless the receive tone of 74.4 is specifically listed for the repeater change the tone mode from TQSL to TONE. That will transmit a tone only but not require a tone for receive.
The repeater spec shows an input and output tone of 74.4, I think this means that a tone is required for RX and TX? I thought TSQL was the best option based on the CHIRP guide I saw online.

Are you hearing anything back on the uv9g, that would indicate you're getting into the repeater (a static burst, beep, etc)? I don't see anything in the settings you mentioned that stands out as 'off'.
If yore getting into the repeater, is the second radio in the same room with you? It's possible that the strong signal (even a few mhz off) is overloading the receiver of the other radio so it doesn't hear the audio coming back from the repeater, though you may hear the repeater key up.
If the answer to the first question is no, are you sure the repeater is still active, the tone hasnt changed, and that you're within transmit range?
I do hear a short static burst back on the radio, but that radio is only a few feet away. I will have my wife monitor it upstairs instead. Good points.

Hi all, I am trying to setup a repeater connection in CHIRP using my Baofeng UV-9G, but I am not able to pick it up from my other radio. Please check if this looks correct?
repeater 462.550 MHz FM, input tone 74.4, output tone 74.4
CHIRP Freq: 462.550000, Tone Mode: TSQL, ToneSql: 74.4, Duplex: +, Offset: 5.000000, Mode: FM, Power: High, all other fields empty
Thank you!

I used a pair of Baofeng UV-9G's up in the mountains a couple weeks ago, and I was pleased with the range and clarity. I'd say we got 3-4 miles on high power with many trees and other obstacles in the way.
-
If you're looking for cheap FRS, I got a pair of Pofung BF-T11's on sale for $20. Programming cable was extra but worth it to get rid of tones, change band to wide and higher power where applicable. I took them fishing and they outperformed my pair of Midland LXT600pa's.

For those other newbies out there, this is an account of setting up my DB-20g.
I'm glad you wrote this, I have been thinking about buying the DB20-G. What antenna did you purchase? I am considering the Nagoya UT-72G.

I have a pair of Baofeng UV-9G's and they are great. Easy to program and long battery life. I use them to chat with my companions when we go on outings, and my friends have bubble pack FRS radios. Everybody keeps in touch nicely.

GMRS is the only Paid option for general repeater use.

Maybe I misunderstood. Are you suggesting that the subchannel aspect of things be improved, so that users could almost have privacy and nuisance-free conversations? But at the same time, allow for wide-open (non-subchannel) settings for those that want to operate on an open channel? I could get behind that.
