True. It certainly could be FRS. I looked at their website but of course nothing about their radios. The owner is British and one of the instructors we heard was British so I feel the origin of the coms was verified. I just thought the whole thing was cool… listening to people talk while falling out of the sky was not what I expected to hear when I turned on my HT in the backyard. I did catch them again yesterday around the same time but only briefly and only sounded like one person, he was saying what maneuver he was going to do before he did them but he didn’t sound like he was directing others.

It’s not the # key unless you are in frequency mode. Check page 24 of the manual for memory mode. Boafeng UV-9G power is menu 2, menu again then up or down, menu exit. You can’t change 8-14 per FCC. 3) Output power (TXP) - MENU No.2 In this MENU you can select the high/middle/ low output power. Low power ≤0.5W; Middle power ≤2W; High power≤ 5W Note: select the output power can improve the quality of the call, while the low output power can reduce the radiation and the battery capacity loss. On channels 8-14, the output power cannot be modified If by chance you are referring to the Wouxun KG-UV9G it’s menu 5. I hope this helps

I suppose it could but my thought is that having a radio that could have a mic in a helmet would be more something that you would find with a GMRS but not an absolute for sure. Completely unobstructed line of sight !?! We thought they were at a closer small airport on the first jump but then on the second jump they were talking about lining up with the road near the prison and we pieced together it was the skydiving business in Lompoc which is next to a small airfield near the prison.

Yesterday I picked up and listened to several jumps from a five person skydiving group on GMRS channel 10. They were about 26 miles away give or take a few thousand feet (height is might). My wife and I were able to deduce where they were by the landmarks they were calling out and confirming a skydiving business located near there. One person transmitting and directing the group in turns and formations, calling out altitude. “Jumper 4 you can close in on 3 but don’t pass him” “everyone turn left on my mark 3-2-1” that sort of thing. Some wind noise seeping in to the coms. I was a little surprised I guess something like this was on such an open frequency and not the AM air or a business band. I would guess they had ctcss set to keep outside interference out but I didn’t think to check and I sure wasn’t going to break in for a chat while they’re falling out of the sky. I’ll say it was a bit more entertaining than the kids on the street with their FRS radios. I’d be interested in what others have heard that surprised them.

Great stuff. Our family moved to the beach in a small town in 1975 on the 4th of July. The similarities were not lost on my brother and I as kids. There was even an old crusty Quint like character with a fishing boat in the bay behind our home. It’s our favorite holiday. Thus my post. Thanks for sharing your story.

Yes I’m referring to the reverse function. No I’m not talking about talk around. Both my KG-935 and KG-S88G have it and they’re both GMRS radios. As I mentioned before the Boafeng GT-3WP has it which is the ham version of the Boafeng UV-9G. Same radio but the UV-9G is obviously configured for GMRS. Both manuals show it having the function. The UV-9G doesn’t though and my point was there’s no reason it couldn’t or shouldn’t. That’s all.

It’s software. It works in the same radio ham version so why not have it programmed in the GMRS version. It’s the same radio. It’s not a function the GMRS isn’t allowed to have.

Interesting. I really don’t understand why they lock it down? Adding insult to injury they print it in the manual as if you could do it. It wouldn’t cost them anymore to make the radio a little bit better. Other manufacturers seem able to figure it out.

Okay follow up. I did try the method you posted which does seem to put the “R” for reverse on the screen in channel mode, on my GT-3WP. Which is the ham version of the UV-9G but when I try it on the UV-9G it does not work. My assessment is that they printed the same info in the UV-9G manual as the GT-3WP but it only works on the ham radio and not the GMRS. I can confirm that my Wouxun KG-S88G does have this function.

Check page 19 and 20 of your manual. It looks like you need to be in frequency mode. I did try this on my UV-9G and I couldn’t get it to work. Maybe you’ll have better luck. I found the function easier to use on my Wouxun radios fwiw. page 19. UV-9G 6.3 Search CTCSS/DCS Code With this function you can search and store the CTCSS/DCS code used by other radios. Procedure: a. In frequency mode press [MENU]+[1][1]. b. Press [MENU] key again. c. Press [*SCAN] key; CT will blink on the display. d. When another radio is transmitting, the display will show the CTCSS/DCS code e. After searching the CTCSS code, the radio will beep and stop scanning. f. After setting, press [MENU] key for confirmation and store, or press [PTT] or [EXIT] key to return to standby mode. NOTE 1: The DCS scanning has the same procedure of CTCSS code, but you have to select MENU+10 to enter scanning. NOTE 2: If CTCSS has not searched the code, you can search using the DCS mode. this does not appear to work

What I have noticed is the use of colors in their radios seems to be consistent with the waterproof IP67 radios. I would say in this situation being able to see your radio as it falls into water makes sense. Disclaimer, I have the Wouxun KG-S88G… in gray/black

While there is no official coordination for GMRS repeaters the Mygmrs map page can help repeater owners see what’s in an area ahead of choosing a frequency. At least the ones that are listed. I’m going to guess the tones in question being used would be 141.3. While it’s not a hard fast rule this is generally accepted as a tone used on open repeaters and sometimes referred as the travel tone. That said an owner can still require permission through in my opinion having chosen this tone and or one that overlaps they may want to be somewhat forgiving. As mentioned by @kidphc it really is up to you how you want to set your radio up. Like you, I have some channel’s and tones installed more than once. For my personal set up I have programmed the first bank of the eight repeater channels with those that are closest to my home. The second bank is all eight repeater channels with the 141.3 tones labeled travel and the number for just that, travel. Finally the banks after that are repeaters I may use when further away from home. In the one case where there is a frequency that is being used twice near me I only entered the one that has more range and I am more inclined to use. I’m aware the other one is there and it’s an open repeater as well. The reason I set things up this way is I can separate repeaters closer to home from others by the use of scan groups. I like being able to only scan one particular group. With all the fire threats here, I have a channel group for the two counties near me so I can be a bit more informed when I’m hearing sirens near me. It came in handy last year as there was a fire less than a mile away. It’s all your preference and you may find you change things more than once. Hope this helps.
