  2. Hi All. First post, here. I'm an RF engineer in the cellular space and have been dipping my toes into some use cases for GMRS for some local relay trail runs as a hobby. I am specifically looking for information on the receiver RSL range for some of the more common H/Ts like the KG-805G or the KG-UV6D. Since any link that has an HT in it will always be reverse link limited, I am surprised by the lack of published information on this. For cellphones as an example, most are capable of an RSSI range of -30 dBm to -110 dBm depending on the SINR. What I cannot find is: a) general guidance on that for GMRS (or even something close in the HAM bands) or any specific information from the Wouxun page on the actual range for the 805G or the UV6D. I need this to determine my coverage levels in my propagation tool, Atoll. I've built the sites in the software and have run the predictions for my locations, but without understanding the minimums and related SNR, I can't set my thematic maps precisely enough for a good idea of where my limits will be. I'm currently set up with -95 dBm as that seems to be fairly reasonable, but my OCD doesn't like assumptions. Thanks for any help!

    Jeeps & Radios

Just completed a GMRS test between my Jeep and the significant other. We both have Midland MXT400 w/ 6db antenna mounted on her JK and my TJ. Over 40 miles from Northern Colorado into Wyoming just south of Cheyenne. My standing elevation was at 5K' and hers traveling maxed at 6.1K' with some moderate terrain signal shadowing along the way. Clear voice typically and 3 to 5 on RX.

    SWR trouble shooting

From the sounds of it everything is 100% new. Different antenna, different mast material, different mast height, feed-line changes. Perhaps even a different location? A lot of variables now to investigate. Is the Ed-Fong antenna perched fully on top of the mast or beside it? If it is beside the mast the metal mast itself would affect it where as the PVC would not have. What was the SWR of the antenna alone before putting it up? What was it with just a short jumper between the meter and antenna. What was it mounted to when you measured it and at what elevation above the ground? What was it when on the ground and attached to just 1 section of metal mast. Is the antenna now at is higher elevation located near something that the previous antenna was not? Has there been some damage/deformation of the cable? Are all the connections tight? Have the connections been exposed to rain before they where sealed and made moisture tight? There are so many factors that could contribute to the current value. It would be good to know what you started with and which factors caused the change. I recently installed an antenna. I started by measuring the antenna while located 6’ of the ground on a homemade tripod and PVC pole. I then made measurements after every change I made so I could see the effect of each action so I could take remedial action if saw something I did not like. BTW, I am using a NanoVNA H4 to make my measurements. Hope some of this helps. Michael WRHS965 KE8PLM

    Terminal or Antenna

Replaced connector, with the same results. 2.8 to 3.0. This time i only soldered the pin and didn't solder the shield to the plug. I read that soldering the shield can result in overheating the insulator in the wire. Also with the new connector i extended the antenna as such as i could in the mount, about 1/4 of a inch. the results were a drop in swr to 2.0 - 2.2. already ordered a new antenna but i only have the two connectors so cant try another one without getting more. Thanks for all the help. Justin WRKX762

  8. GMRS is part of the LMR world so the propogation document I would refer you to is EIA/TIA TSB88C or D. Radios in LMR typically comply with TIA603D as far as SINAD sensitivity, IM , spurious, and adjacent channel rejection . That document stipulates how LMR radios are tested and provides minimum standards. The "Common" Chinese brand radios do not comply with any industry standards thus a receiver spec of "-122 dBm " is meaningless in the real world where stronger out of band signals will swamp the receivers of cheap radios that lack adequate front end filtering. Just passed the exams!

Well, today I passed my Technician and General exams for Ham license. When they told me I passed the General also, my mouth dropped open and all I could say was "WOW!" LoL I knew a few weeks ago I wanted to at least get my Technician license. And, I did order the book and got started studying for it. Along the way, I heard some folks on Facebook saying they wished they'd gone for the General too. Others said they hadn't studied for it, but were given the opportunity to take the test, and only missed by 2 or 3 questions. So, given the much increased communication privileges of the General, I decided to try to go for both of them. What a glutton for punishment! I was about 1/2 through my Technician book when I stumbled onto Ham Radio Prep and HamStudy.org. I signed up for the Technician/General package at Ham Radio Prep and started in. I found that liked working that way through the material better than the book. Also, I found the review tools at HamStudy were very good. Very helpful. It wasn't long before I was passing my Technician practice exams in the 80-90% ranges. At that point I moved on to the General studies via Ham Radio Prep. Gotta say, I was studying about as hard as I did back in my college days for a Final exam. I was even turning off the TV to really dig in!! LoL Even so, I sure didn't have the same confidence in the General material. Oh that math was messing me up. Never was that good in it, and this stuff, and their combining formulas, was making my head spin. On my first General practice exam I think I just got a 45%. Ugh! A few days later I tried again and happened to just squeeze out a 75%. "Okay, maybe this is doable." Mostly, the last couple days, I just finished the Ham Radio Prep material, and then I used the HamStudy tool to just keep reviewing, capturing my wrong answers to review the correct ones, and repeat. Actually, some of it was even making more sense to me! So, this morning when exam day came, I felt better, but I was still quite unsure of the General. Boy! I didn't figure on the stress of having 3 people watching me taking my exams! As I worked though the Technician exam I could hear myself thinking, "Take it easy. Don't mess this up. Relax. Go back and check." Ha! I passed the Technician, and it was on to the General. I knew it all depended on what group of questions I got from the pool. It could go either way. I was less sure on the General, that's certain. But, as I reviewed my answers, I thought perhaps I had a chance. I clicked that Submit button and held my breath. Shortly afterward I heard the moderator saying, "Well, you passed your General." I mean, my mouth literally dropped open, my eyes opened wide with amazement, and all I could say was "Wow! Wow! Wow!" So, looks like I'm a Ham now. My sister said, "A ham for a Ham!" LoL Oh, I just ordered a better HT too. ;-)

  10. I purchased 2 of these for my son. I immediately flashed the new firmware, then I read the data from the radio. When the read was complete, a window popped up, which did not show the channels/frequencies. If you look around, there is a place in the upper left part of the screen that lets you select the channels window. I don't have the application in front of me, but it is there if you look around a bit.

    Great people

It's nice to learn about decent folks today. My recent service and retail encounters have been literal nightmares....so thank you for posting something to raise my spirits. My next purchase will be through Buy Two Way Radios, just because it's the only way to propagate decent behavior.

I agree, I had issue with my 805G and they offered to exchange it and I said wait let me restore from factory backup first... That fixed it, so called back and told them all is well. They where ready to stand behide products they sell. That why I keep coming back. Jack
