  1. I dont usually like to post videos here, but I have been so inspired by several of the "experts" in this forum complaining that we should not be using radios made in China that I put together a list of all the American Made radios AND I vow to purchase each one of these American made radios and do a full review of them in the next 30 days.. Thank you to "some people" that opened my eyes about not purchasing radios that are not made in America.

  4. Yes. Someone did mention that. I will need to look for a heavy duty plug & watch it closely for a while.

  5. Thank you for not HiJakkin me.. Easy answer: By making decent (not the best) radios and selling them for low-dollars.. And they can do this because of no unions, less/no environmental restrictions, government subsidies ENCOURAGING manufacturing, no/few child labor regulations, etc.. Basically the opposite of what you find in the U.S.

  6. Your reply was very pleasant and I appreciate that. I try not to think of it as "correcting" someone... because occasionally there is a negative connotation with the expression. I hope my reply didn't come across coarsely. I prefer to think of it more as... we have different experiences and we are just sharing our experiences to help each other.

  7. I'm not that good with the math. I cheated and got the information on the Internet from several different sources.

  8. If that happens I would be more worried about the Fusible links going up in smoke. Unfortunately, cigarette lighter plugs tend to be 12 gauge or less on the back side.

It's a great radio with many pre-programmed frequencies to play with/listen to and it has many fars. Sometimes I just stare at mine and caress it softly.

  10. It is definitely not just FRS radios. Every GMRS radio I have owned or used from Midland, has the call feature and a bunch of call tones. That includes the new MXT500 and MXT575. Come to think of it, every Motorola GMRS handle I have ever own had a call feature too.

    New to GRMS

Is there something specific about the radio or GMRS that you are lost about? Maybe if you give us some details someone can help.

  12. Unfortunately, she will have to apply for her own license. There are two legalese passages— IANAL —that prevent your girlfriend from using your unused license. I agree, and I don't envy the task she has ahead. I recommend Notarubicon's guide for applying for a GMRS license; it's what I used to get mine. As for FRNs, after looking at the FCC's page about FRNs, it appears she will need her own, too, and the guide goes over that also. Onto the legalese. First, the legalese for GMRS actually has provisions for something close to what you want to do, but no cigar: a GMRS license may be used by "immediate family members" of the licensee. Part 95.1705(c)(2), the legalese in question, defines that term rather generously IMO, but it does not extend to boyfriends or girlfriends (weird, it extends to parents and stepparents, but only siblings and not stepsiblings): Second, while IANAL, I asked someone who is (obligatory disclaimer: they're not your lawyer) about what the "Conditions" section of my GMRS license means when I got my license. Incidentally, I believe part (or most) of her answer was along the lines of "you can't give it to someone else if you're bored with it and don't want it anymore." I'm guessing that that was conveyed by the following sentence from said section: Perhaps your conditions are different and more lenient... so YMMV? I don't know.

  13. I'm running a Retevis RA25 "20 watt" (not quite) at full power through a DC inverter at home, rated at 12V/10A. The radio is showing 12.5V. I imagine you would be okay running your radio to the cigarette lighter, but like it was said, watch the amp draw?

  14. 15 to 20 watts. Don't sweat, it will still be 3x better than a portable.

You can actually enjoy GMRS for your purposes without having to throw shade at Hams...

  16. Everyone in our GMRS group uses MDC so we know who is talking and/or what radio they are on.

  17. I'm glad you have a good sense of humor.. I actually do just that on our trips. If there is someone who didn't bring a radio or doesn't have FRS/GMRS when everyone else does, I just hand out a cheap loaner while we're out on the trails. If you let someone use the GMRS radio,, unless the person using your handheld radio is an immediate family member, they can't use your license to go on the repeater. Also,, FRS radios are not repeater capable, so that prevents someone with an FRS radio from getting on a repeater as well.
