I was going to answer this yesterday, but did not because I thought it was clear... I also have the GMRS-9R (two purchased on Amazon). I use chirp and you should use the Baofeng UV-9G setting. It works perfectly.2 points

Here is a GMRS specific version. It is called GMRS Live and works on Raspberry Pi. https://www.gmrslive.com1 point

Thanks. I just downloaded the .iso and will probably install it to play around with it but it looks like AllStar is made for HAMS. When I look at the node list all I have seen on my quick look was HAM frequencies. I have a couple mini computers that I can install software on and leave headless by the repeater (if I ever get that far). One of the computers is running Windows 10 and the other I installed Linux Mint on to play with. They were originally used for digital signage. They are only slightly bigger than a raspberry Pi but have an i5 Intel processor.1 point

Where do I start? Not exactly new to this but feel like it... repeater questions

Welcome! Great tower and great background! I worked as the JATC apprentice coordinator and later in the control center at an electric and gas utility for many years and our world would have stopped if not for the linemen, electricians, and relay technicians. Anyway, a repeater is connected to the internet with a network node device usually running AllStar software. Most are built around Raspberry Pi’s which have gotten easier to obtain lately. But by no means is it as easy as plug and play. Not that you can’t handle it, but there are always some issues. I haven’t done it myself but I have built some PiStar nodes for ham radio. Based on what I’ve read here the AllStar network nodes may require some source code changes, whereas PiStar is much easier, so my experience is not relevant. Hopefully this helps you a little.1 point -
I'm not particularly impressed with it. It does work, but it has lousy filtering so it picks up noise when the car is moving. Also, the transmit audio sucked eggs until I drilled out the mic hole to almost 1/4". Even at that it's still somewhat low. It's an OK-enough backup radio for throwing in another car when I need it but I can't recommend it as a primary radio, especially since I had to mod it to make it audible. I wanted to like it, I like the form factor, and maybe there are some versions that work better. Just not this one. In fact, this radio is sort of the last straw between me and the cheap Chinese radios flooding the market. Except for my Baofeng UV5Rs. I'm still a fan of those.1 point

@H8SPVMT Love the Jeeps. I am with you on I don't like mud, tears to much stuff up, and I like to trail and climb. Wife and I are approaching retirement, and we love to travel.1 point

Well folks- it gets better. The person claiming ownership of this site and also posting that nonsense on the site page has nothing to do with the site or its ownership. The owners are aware of this transgression but it doesn't appear anything's been done yet.1 point -
I'm officially retired now. We (wife & I) get out often as life allows but we try to stay away from the crazy stuff as we travel alone anymore. Getting too old for winching and shushing around in the mud. Learned a good lesson on that in a OK bean field while traveling on the Trans American Trail, alone.1 point

Hello Mike and welcome. @WRXB215 is correct, it usually takes a couple days at most for the FCC to put it in the database that this site uses to verify your call, unless the FCC is having issues. You can check the database here.1 point

Sorry, I don't agree. He simply made a joke about the thread title. His joke was funny, and not offensive. Your response however, was, in calling someone a DICK. I clicked on the thread expecting it to be about someone other people on the forum might know, perhaps asking if anyone had heard from Terry, or maybe if anyone thought a product or service someone named Terry offered was worthwhile, or maybe letting people know Terry had passed away. Nope, just a post asking a question about a radio. Good question, bad thread title, which I am sure was not intentional on your part. Thread titles are used so people know what the thread is about. Calling someone a DICK for making a joke about a thread title that doesn't come close to describing what the thread was about is an emotional knee-jerk reaction. Maybe take a second to breathe and rethink. ONce again, I believe your mis-named thread was not intentional, but it did nothing to tell anyone what your thread was about, hence the joke.1 point

Yeah, well at least these racks will give you a good ride when you're in the mood and won't complain about headaches.1 point

With only 22 channels available for me I just scan them all. I even do that at home. If I hear something interesting I stop the scan. It helps if the radio scans reasonably fast too. Some of the Chinese radios are really SLOW while scanning, if that matters to you. That might be one thing to check before laying out your money.1 point
