  1. Oh, we can fix that. Buckle up. I got into this about a year ago with a $20 POS CCR. "I'll just buy one and try it," I said to myself. I'm up to six and have no idea how this happened.

  2. Exactly! At least a sense of humor, even dry, is enjoyable. That other person is more like the obsessed person who stands on the street corner shouting at passersby and waving a sign that says “Repent, linked repeaters! The end is nigh!”

  5. Hello everyone. Just wanted to come here and say hello from Hood County Texas. I'm just getting started in this hobby. So far, I only have 3 HT's. I will be looking to get a mobile unit when I figure out which one I want. Anyways, I wanted to say thanks in advance for any future help I may need to advance my knowledge. And thanks to the ones here that are on YouTube. You have already helped me out tons!! Vince WRWB752

  7. Just got off the phone with NCG and they said that they are waiting for the delivery to reach the port and claim that they will have them for distribution in a week or two. Of course, they will need to be shipped to the many vendors. Is it real, or just smoke and mirrors? I'm added to the DXE que so we shall see. A sliver of hope is better than no hope.

AFAIK nobody else makes a "Part 95 GMRS Repeater" Your best bet would be to look at LMR/UHF/H.A.M. repeaters. None of them are simple to use, but the RPT50 IS simple to use.. as long as it works.

  10. 10-4 on that. There is no way possible in this world that I can ever have the investment into radios that I have into firearms. Zero, none

  11. I guess it is sort of like the stock market... when everyone is freaking out because they don't understand the reality or the long term ... time to buy at a discount.

  12. I know how that works all too well. I'm also into firearms, and R/C cars. The good thing, so far, about gmrs is that I can buy a "good" radio for a lot less that a good firearm or R/C car.

  13. The first time I dropped my BTECH tri-band, a Boafeng derivative, on a cement floor it killed the audio. I had to get the radio replaced under warranty. I'm not impressed with their durability.

They are referring to requests not the repeater. If you are not signed in it says disabled by owner. Although it’s the same information as the forum you need to sign in separately on the map/repeater page. Once you do you’ll not see disabled anymore but rather that the repeaters (ones in question here) are open and the tones are displayed along with the request button. This has nothing to do with “repeaters dropping like flies” as it was suggested by @WRUE951. He’s just obsessed with another topic not relevant here. Try and be helpful people. Edit: in short, once you are able to register here you’ll see the info you are looking for.

  19. They were going to be my suggestion as well. A little pricier than the general ebay seller, but tested good gear. They ARE on ebay with the username erac1 last I saw. Have bought a couple things from them in the past, and they've been easy to deal with and helpful, zero issues

We are using the Bridgecom UHF repeater for GMRS and haven't had any issues. Though we did buy it without the built in duplexer since we had a better duplexer on hand. Bridgecom will program it for you with what ever GMRS repeater channel and tones you want. Programming is pretty simple with their software.

  24. I asked my buddy why he bought his third Beretta Silver Pigeon. He said, "Well, I was going quail hunting and my 12 and 20 gauge Berettas were too much, so I bought the 28 gauge." Those run ~$2,500 each -- and the Silver Pigeon is considered an entry level Beretta shotgun. I have a $250 Winchester pump I bought on sale. I like radios.

GMRS is dying, so Radioddity is bundling the DB20-G with an magnetic antenna mount, handy dandy cup holder mount for the radio, programming cable, and a book about how GMRS can help you family for a mere $89. So I have one on the way. I really haven't noticed a lack of traffic on the three repeaters I can hit from my QTH (location for you non-hammers). Spend freely and support the economy!

I agree with the agreement. In a heavily-wooded area I figure 1/2 mile, 2 miles if I'm lucky. Are you in your vehicle while your son is in the house? If so, that's a worse-case combination; try going outside and facing each other.

I’ve had a couple of these for about two years now. I’ve had no issues and despite being way less expensive than other radios I have they work just as good. None of the bells and whistles but solid cheep radios you can beat up that sound good.

What gives makes you think he read the manual after writing the first part of the single post describing what was "on the screen"? Too much effort to backspace over the erroneous statements before completing the post after his epiphany? Or he read the manual and thought he changed to "channels", but failed to actually do so and therefore DID have the dual watch vfo freqs displayed?

  30. I plan on it. I just wish we had more traffic in my area. I'm kind of a "tech nerd", so this is right up my alley. I feel like this rabbit hole is very deep, and I've already fallen in.

  31. Sounds as if your PS isn't right if the fan slows when keying up. A 50W radio will draw 12 to 15 amps when sending. Your PS needs to be 20A or better for that mobile.

  33. FYI.. Routing the coax through the rear hatch on my VW Passat wagon seems to have worked best for me. the angle, spacing, and rubber seal seemed to work much better than the doors or sunroof without bending the coax very much at all. Thanks for all the idea and input everyone.

  40. Yeah... refraction and scatter are why the RF horizon is further than the visual horizon. Once the photons overcome refraction and start to leave the atmosphere, a very small percentage of the signal is scattered, while most keeps traveling in a straight line. The more power you put out, the more the parts per million the scatter is and the more easily the signal can be pulled out of the atmosphere beyond the line of sight. Using troposcatter with a stacked beam antenna array and 1,500w, I have been able to talk to people in Texas from VA on 146.520 during contests and Field Day. UHF performs the same way. It's been awhile... so I don't remember the max distance we got on 446.000, but it was more than 300 miles.

  43. And yet this thread and its question has nothing to do with linked repeaters. Not everything does you know. Also these repeaters appear to be active. So you are just wrong. Most of all you offered no help for the person looking for info, just your obsession with linked repeaters.

  44. You were doing so well until you said the above. I would agree that the role of ham radio is not what it once was, because of things like satellite communications like you mentioned, but in any true emergency, there’s always a role for yet another avenue of communications. Compared to the number of hams, satellite phones are very few. As such, they should be relegated to the higher priority tasks. But many people won’t have access to satellite phones and they will still crave hearing from their loved ones and still need to hear what’s happening in the rest of the world.

    So,.....what now ?

"all" the other GMRS repeater systems throughout the country are not shutting down.. Many are, but some will choose to wait until the FCC actually does/says something. This site is much more than just some linked GMRS repeaters, so, no, my guess is that there is zero reason for this site to shut down.

    Bleed over??

The traditional use of the word “skip” applies to hf radio signals bouncing off the ionosphere. UHF doesn’t do that, but it does propagate long distances sometimes when there’s a temperature inversion which causes tropospheric propagation, also called tropospheric ducting.
