    Line of sight

For an average-height adult, the horizon would be about 3 miles away if the earth were perfectly spherical and smooth. UHF waves aren't 100% line of sight; they do bend slightly due to the earth's electromagnetic field, but it wouldn't add much. So, maybe 3.5 miles if the earth were smooth. Barring anything else, that is the practical limit of a UHF radio. However, the earth isn't smooth and even a little difference in elevation can alter the line of sight substantially. From my house, I can't talk to the WalMart 2 miles to the southwest, but I have talked to another HT 15 miles away to the southeast, a GMRS repeater 25 miles to the northeast, and a 2 meter ham repeater 33 miles to the northeast. Two days ago, I had a conversation on a 2m repeater 20 miles to the north with 1 watt. The difference is elevation -- all the repeaters are on towers and my house is in a relatively high position. To my southwest, there is a hill about 30' higher than my house. I suppose there's some practical limit to how far you can communicate with 1 watt due to atmospheric and electromagnetic interference, but for any practical purposes, it's terrain that limits your range. From one mountaintop to another mountaintop with nothing higher between, 100 miles is attainable with an HT. Unfortunately, most of us aren't in that position.

    Security

It never hurts to have multiple layers of security. But a determined thief will not be stopped if they want something bad enough. My home security is a little different. I have a big dog that is half Great Pyrenees and half lab mix along with several cats. I have red lasers that track movement. The lasers will get the cats attention and they will fiercely attack what ever the lasers are pointing at. And that noise will get the dog's attention. The dog will finish what the cats started. All of which gives me plenty of time to react if I am home.

The surveillance camera's are in the truck, ill be notified ether way. Nothing is 100% but weeding out the amateurs is key and catching the professionals would be nice. Layers of protection/deterrence is key. Like my countermeasures for police, i have 4 layers of protection from them, ticket free for longer than i can remember.

    Tram 1486 issue

I use mine for transmitting on both simplex and to repeaters, but it primarily functions as a repeater antenna, so I cut it for something like 464Mhz - but because of the design of the antenna the SWR is virtually the same on 462 as it is on 467, IIRC its something like 1.03:1 .. The antenna is very forgiving..

Or, you can do like the rest of the doofuses, cut first and then if it doesn't work, get on the Internet and tell everyone how crappy the product is.

    Tram 1486-B Antenna

I’m guessing the OP ordered it, then shifted into overdrive while waiting for it to arrive. Once he receives it he’ll hopefully notice the directions. On the other hand if he took it out of the box and shitcanned the box without reading it, he’s going to suffer some serious ribbing.

    Tram 1486-B Antenna

Yes it has to be cut, as indicated on the instructions in the box.. Those same instructions also very clearly explain what the frequency cuts are, and which sections to cut, and how to cut them. Its almost as if the instructions answer all of your questions. SOURCE: I have a 1486 on my roof.. and, i read the instructions ...

    Tram 1486 issue

I find the Tram antennas pretty easy to tune following their instructions. I tuned my Tram 1174 for 467 and the SWR is a slightly lower on 462. I mostly use the local repeater at 467.600 and the SWR is 1.4 and it is 1.2 at 462.600. I could have kept messing with it but figured 1.2 and 1.4 was good enough. I have the luck of the Irish and stopped there so I didn't cut too much off.

437.815 to 437.785 is 30 kHz, much less than 1 MHz. So you’re shifting +/-15 kHz not MHz.

I actually had the one on the left, as a child. Mid-1960's I believe. Made by Mattel. The barrel retracted into the frame and the grip pivoted into the bottom to make a toy camera. Push down a small lever on the outside and the barrel extended and the grip folded out, as in the picture. I believe it fired roll caps.

  26. Exactly. Since GMRS was always intended to be a Short range or Local radio service to begin with. Everyone's ambitions about trying to make Gmrs a nationwide thing would be better served if they just studied up and got their amateur radio license instead, then they would have Several avenues available to them to accomplish Nationwide comms.

  29. iIf you have one radio in your left hand hitting the transmit button, and you have 2nd radio in your right hand hoping to here the transmission from your left hand and you don't. The radios are to close and you experienced something called de-sense. The radios are to close to one another. As the song goes "you have to keep them seperated"

    Midland Ghost antenna

Fixed them for you.. That spot is fine as long as your soft-top doesn't tear it off, but heed this warning: "Some people" are going to proclaim that ghost antennas are "no good" and "dont work", or that your location is not "perfect" enough.. These people should be ignored with extreme prejudice.

  32. Hmmm I wonder how they would classify a radio installed in a vehicle, but connected to an antenna mounted on a building, but then, because it's all still on the same property, I use a hot-spot in the vehicle to remotely control the mobile radio from my computer to operate the radio from inside the building. Man, make my head hurt just thinking about it.
