I can open a repeater that is a in an area 60 miles away. I do not have a direct line of site so I am surprised I can open it. My handheld will not transmit any voice , can it be that I have power to open repeater but not enough to transmit?  Three of my handhelds will "Kurchunk" it ,but none with audio.  Is this normal? Thanks for any ideas.

I am able to hit 2 repeaters that are over 50 miles from me on my handheld. It is a 5W handheld. I am in Campobello SC and they are in NC. Sounds like your offsets may not be right. If its 462.5000 the offset is 467.5000 etc, etc.

Yes.. AND... Even if you accidentally hit the PTT button without the antenna connected, the radio will be fine..

    AND...
Even if you accidentally hold-down the PTT button for a few minutes without the antenna connected, the radio will be fine - doing this is not recommended, but contrary to what "some people" will tell you lies about, nothing will happen other than heating up the innards.

I was "thinking" that, but wanted to confirm. Thank you.

  3. I have done a search before, but I prefer just opening the map on this site, zooming in to my "area" and looking at repeaters around me. I look at the green halo range and if it's close enough I enter the tones for the repeaters and try them. That's just my prefered method. Also I do this for travel. If I know I am going on a trip and plan my route, I look at repeaters along that route and get them programmed.

  4. I will say since the storms, I have seen a lot of new people in the GMRS areas of social media I follow.

This seem like an amazing time to grow and help these new people getting into the hobby.

I would say, like me, the new crowd found myGMRS and are just going through requesting all the repaters close to them no realizing they don't have do all the requests unless they are labeled "request permission".

SO, if any of our new GMRS people see this post is a repeater is listed as "Open" you are free to use that repeater without permissions. If it labled "Request permission", then please do so.

I hope the new influx of users enjoy the hobby and stick with it.

    Hi everyone,

I’m relatively new to GMRS and currently have a few Wouxun KG-935G Plus handhelds and a couple of KG-1000G Plus base units. I’m using CHIRP and Wouxun’s software for programming.

I’d love to connect with someone more experienced who might have an improved code plug that I could apply to my radios. I’m located in the Cornelius/Lake Norman area.

Thanks so much for your help!

I learned to work my way around the Map on this site and find the repeaters close enough to me that I could hit and programmed those tones. I have learned and grown slowly and by asking questions. Glad to help if I can. I use the KG 935t myself and enjoy that radio.

A repeater I'm wanting to connect to is listed as having Input Tone "265 DPL," but this doesn't match any of the options in my Radiodity GM-30 (actually a Baifeng GM-15) software. The options I see are "D265N" and "D264I." Which one should I use? And should I enter this my my transceiver's Rx DCS or its Rx CTCSS?

The DPL just means digital, So what you want is that D265N for your tone. And that was a good question. Feel free to ask anything.

Use DaVinci Resolve.  It's the same software many commercial movie production companies use, and is the top rated software used in Hollywood.  The best part is, its free for folks like us.  Commercial licenses don't give us anything we need.

I use Corel VideoStudio also, which is $80 to buy, but is way easier to use when I am doing something quick.

Thank you! I will look at it this evening.

  8. @marcspaz I am new to the video editing and took the time to make one on CapCut, but when I went to download it said I didn't have enough space to do it. It wanted me to pay.... So, I have not gotten a full video done yet. Not sure I want to pay for editing yet. If that makes sense.

How many mounting locations do you want? "Yes"
    lol

I have those bullet proof mounts in my colorado z71, great stuff. I abuse my truck pretty good, and my phone and tablet have never fallen out or even moved.

Yes and Yes, I only need about 6 more mounts. lol

I agree, these are great mounts and I have had no issues in 2 years with phones. I will put the iPad mount to use this weekend in Ga.

Heck yeah! So glad you have gotten to do that traveling. Enjoy the trails! Would be cool seeing you at Uwharrie but in a couple weeks me and some friends are doing Beasley Knob. Uwharrie a few weeks later, more than likely.

Dickey Bell, as a Trail, went through the rehab and is in fantastic condition. However, Little Daniel is really washed out a lot compared to my trip in 2021. A lot of those out-croppings are extremely more difficult. I would say more difficult than any part of the topside of 390/Daniel. People with 3.5" of lift and 37" tires were taking 7 to 10 minutes to make it to the top. With my Jeep being on  4.5" long-arm with 40's, it was a walk in the park. less than 2 minutes.

    You showoff you, lol. I am on 3.5" with 37's. I know, I know, I wish I was 4.5" with 40's.
