I would be pissed if you put me on that list!  Most people that use GMRS are not interested in being contacted by random strangers. ...Then to add it to google and Farce book who harvest and sell everyone's data already.

Good one!  The funny part is that its like you dont realize that you put yourself on that list and all that information that you gave to the FCCs such as your home-address is tied to your GMRS callsign, and was already on Google, Facebook, and probably a lot of other places..

If I ever wanted to cancel and run into the problems listed above, then I would just stop payment, or close the PPal acct.

I agree and recommend the same to anyone having trouble with this company, (or any company)..  For recurring payments via PayPal you dont even need to close the PayPal account, you can simply "end" the recurring payments.

    • For comparison you could look at one of the pre-programmed repeater channels 23-30
    • You could key up and if you have it wrong it wont matter/wont hurt anything
    • On a GMRS repeater if the frequency given is 462.xx then it will always be +5
    • It looks like you haven't added the recieve-tone, but that is optional anyway, and for a beginner/to reduce potential mistakes i would not bother with it yet

It all looks right but the only way to know for sure is to try it.. and remember, if it's not right, it doesn't matter/nothing is going to break/no airplanes will drop from the sky.

naturally I looked at Kemp as well as ebay which begs the question, if buying an XTL 5000 or 2500 or whatever model from ebay how would I know the flashcode to determine if it does ADP encryption or if it does p25 or to determine frequency range

If you buy from Kemp, or any reputable dealer, you tell them what you want and they will sell it to you OR, they'll tell you what they have on-hand .. if you buy from ebay, beware, its a den of thieves and liars.

It does require additional cost with a xtl5k/xts5k you will need a key loader

Incorrect.  The Motorolas can do "ADP" encryption which does not require a key-loader.. ADP is not as strong as AES256 (which does require a key-loader), but it is MORE than good-enough for anyone not transmitting state-secrets or plotting another unplanned group-tour of The Capitol.

is one digital voice mode more user friendly and easier to program/obtain/work with, than another?

It has been my experience that P25 is much easier to setup/program than DMR. Both can do a LOT, and neither are 'easy'..  But setting up standard (non-trunked) P25 on simplex or a repeater is very straight-forward and setting up encrypted P25 is also pretty easy AFTER you know what to do.

they aren't going to bug anything of significance.

LIES!! I know this for a fact because the guy that posted that spurious RF emissions from a UV-5R will totally black-out emergency services started his post by saying  "..I have been a licensed ham radio operator for 23 years"... and in his forum signature there was license number and a list of all 17 radios that he owns.. So, yah, he was totally legit.

So is it possible to have a radio that does digital and analog, dual mode type use?

Pretty much all XTL5000's are Analog and Digital (P25) capable (at the same time).  Although i'm sure there are some out there that do only one or the other, I have never seen one (and I/we have gone through buying & setting up dozens for our local GMRS gang).

Does the xtl5000 have the capability to be used on multiple frequencies

YES.. although as mentioned, the XTL comes in EITHER a VHF model or a UHF model.  I have several XTL5000 UHF models and they are programmed with all GMRS channels, a dozen or so GMRS repeaters, a dozen or so more H.A.M. repeaters, as well as all of my business/LMR encrypted channels.

When you apply for your LMR/Business license you can choose to get UHF freqs, VHF freqs, or a combination of both.

They are, but not legal to transmit with on GMRS

Incorrect.. If the (factory) box says "GMRS Compatible" as stated by the OP (and it was not written in crayon) then it is the GMRS version, which is FCC Part 95 approved for use on GMRS meaning they are perfectly legal and within FCC guidelines to transmit on GMRS with.

  10. There are many companies & business-radio resellers that will do all the paperwork and footwork for you, for a modest fee. Last month I got my LMR/Business license and 7 frequencies from a place called Kemp Wireless in Eugene Oregon - everything included was less than $400 if i recall correctly.  Basically they asked me a bunch of questions over the phone, I gave them my FRN info (YOU have to create an FRN/account on the FCC website) and 15 days later I had my LMR/Business License and my frequencies .

  11. "uplink" = TRANSMIT

    any "D" tone = DCS/DTC/DPL

So just select DCS/DTC tone D423 from the Transmit Tone menu whilst on the correct repeater channel, save it, and you're done.  Should take no more than 15 seconds start to finish.

PRO TIP!  -- The numbers of CTCSS and DCS tones do not overlap, so if you ever aren't sure, just scroll through both menu options until you see the number you are looking for - it will only be in EITHER DTC or CTC, never both.
