  1. Based on the FCC site down, I checked to see if the fee was being changed to $35 for GMRS... No it did not change yet... Jack
  2. That is good to know that of you own a Midland MXT400 can be switched to wide band which make is sound so much better. Thinking Midland was only narrow band caused me to purchase a wide band KG-805G Jack
  3. Vince did a great job of sending you to the correct place... the hard part for me was under Radio Serive pick ZA which is GMRS license. If you want a few weeks the price will go to $35 for 10 years. Me and many others are in the $70 Club as I got my license in Nov 2020. Still $7 a year at current price and good deal at that. The best way to see if you have a repeater in your area is to just scan the Repeater Channels 15 to 22. Jack
  4. First let me welcome you to the forum and group of helpful GMRS folks. I must be living in the Utopia of GRMS with a repeater. WNC is very family friendly, great for kids to learn and who want to go get their ham ticket. And for the rest of us have a family friendly private owned repeater with a 30 mile plus range. The owner of the repeater wants others to use it with permission and controls and watches the use. We are planning a GRMS fest picnic in August to do a meet and greet and change the PL code as he has many authorize users folks who have let their license expire as well as his PL code has been written on the wall for unauthorize users share PL code with others people who do not have unit ID. So are you willing to do a private repeater and set up use and purpose of family friendly communication? One of the things our local private repeater owners wants to have a kids night so they can chat and get involved in GMRS leading ot ham ticket. In short if you do not have what you desire for your area, make it happen. Our local private repeater owner does not charge a fee to play but open to donations. Which we did with funds and offered time to help work on the repeater site as needed. Also some of the members on the repeater help each other in base station setup etc. For our family we use the local repeater for family communication, Jeeping where we do not have cell coverage and talking to others and make friends. Make it happen for your area, let us know what you plan to do, equipment you pick etc... There are many good support and helpful folks on this forum of which they have allowed me to grow in knowledge, be thankful for my local owner private repeater. You could be that guy in south eastern VA. Jack
  5. Welcome to the group WRKP558 from fellow LEO. Like you, We have 6 adult kids 30-50 yo and G kids from 2-27 yo. I been teaching the teen G Kids GMRS and they are eating it up but some are shy to talk sometimes. You would think after playing with the FRS for years camping they would have gotten over mike fear... Must be the call sign mind sets that raise the bar knowing anyone can report them. We are working on our repeater adventure now. As for antenna, It has been suggest to look at DB404-B about $300 verse the $40 DYI. This forum is always good for suggestions which I consider as helpful. Jack
  6. Welcome to the forum and asking a great question... as a fellow newbie back in Nov 2020... I took the Part 95 certified radios to make my $80 purchase handheld from CCP as a starter radio and has been great... One thing I learned is my handheld is 25MHz bandwidth and sound is great... I'm not the tech guy. I can not remember if it was Kenwood or maybe Midland did half the bandwidth... Someone will help me remember... Jack
  7. "PapaBear" was my handle and all the kids, now 40 yo where baby, momma bear and running dear, the runner of the family. No memory of my callsign. Now on another point... New GMRS fee start date... See below from FCC... I think it will happen end of Feb or weeks into March... And if I'm right Tampa Bay will win SuperBowl.. But I do like Patrick Mahomes II. V. 8. smalpierre, I would sail from SW FL to Cuba and the area... I had a satellite antenna and receiver connected to my computer to capture real time weather. It was not as good as preplanning the trip and weather coming. I later became a weatherman to figure this all out. So now no sailing and I use app called Weather Underground and it is 70% correct and about 5 hours late on forecasting. I just can't trust NOAA view of the weather being 70% correct and 5 hours late... Just listening/reading someone view just does not cut it for me after taking the weatherman course years ago. You are well ahead of me on the repeater project. I purchase a GR1225 and the seller whom I a trust is a ham and is setting tuning it for me... We talked about antennas and he suggested a DB404...$350 which is same price for repeater but have been told it all in the antenna and location. What are you going to use... cable, cable ends etc... My guy said use Heliax cable... I'm not smart enough to know why so will learn via this and other post. So what are you using as a repeater hardware... Other folks are looking at us to answers. Thanks for helping me compare notes.. so other can learn. Jack
  9. Your are welcome... Sounds like you did it all right even getting 15 inch antenna. Sorry link was bad, got it off google and did not double check... So try this. https://www.buytwowayradios.com/nagoya-na-771g.html as got it from the firm. I did have a 771 and got the 771G for other KG-805G handheld as it tune for GMRS. I could tell the difference (IMHO) and was able to return the 771 to Amazon thus have matching 771G. You just have to track it down as to the noise. Take radio with you in the car... My grand daughter and I where board one day and heard folks on FRS channel 3 and find a crew laying fiber optics cable for Frontier. They used the FRS to say pull more cable and ask mom to pick us up. Remember this is western NC... Watch where you step. Jack
  10. Welcome WRKN318, this is WRJX754 over... 5 is a good number to start on your squelch unless you are getting noise on scan... What you are not hearing tells me the other person can trigger your handheld to opens up but to weak to get you. If you go higher on squelch you will not hear them at all... In fact you will only hear those who voice will come over and will not be tripped up. I would look for a better antenna, I have two of these BUT make sure they will fit your handheld before ordering as I have a KG-805G. It is night and day on making my 805G work for miles. https://www.buytwowayradios.com/blog/2020/07/new-gmrs-antennas-from-nagoya-are-now-available.html You will have a great time on this forum, enjoy yourself and keep asking questions so other newbies like you and me will learn. Jack
  11. Well hook up a repeater to the net... cost you lest then 1K and so much fun and learning. Jack
  12. Welcome Jeeper and RVer's... GMRS is for you and your family with grand kids. I'm having so much fun showing the grand kids that GMRS is two steps up from FRS and CB, which is fun as a kid. But my preteen like to talk via repeater to BFF. Yes they have to do the right things and call signs. They have so much respect for the license of GMRS... Yes I beat it into them... So I purchased a Motorola GR1225 repeater for home and will use it for RVing and Jeeping. It is not installed yet maybe by March as it is cold outside. I'm connected with a private repeater owner who has the best location and 30 mile range. He has taught me and G daughter so much... We donated to his repeater cost and offer to help him short of tower climbing. We are planing on a GMRS fest for the 50 or so who are authorized on his repeater. So read between the lines and if you have any question PM me and I will go into details... You are in the right place, welcome to GMRS. It is a family fun thing short of being a Ham which is for one person license. Let me know if this helps you. Jack P.S. I use an app on my iPhone for real time weather... Hearing NOAA over the air does not do it for me... I'm more visual and like to see radar and all the other data.
  13. Welcome to the forum, family and group, just reading and follow posts daily. This site is better than a book as you will see two or three sides to issue. I'm a newbie since Nov and it is like drinking from a fire hose... These guys are great mentors, coaches and friends... Feel safe to ask questions as it has been asked before and I think some of the guys (inter circle) take turn answering them. This is the only way a new bunch of newbies come on will see the same question asked from last month etc. Jack
  14. You go "Radio Cop" walking around undercover. You are having way to much fun plus exercising and spying... Invite your group to come to the Mall for fun while staying in shape in the winter. BYOR (bring your own radio) with raincoat, hat, sunglass etc. Jack
  15. I agree with wayoverthere suggestion... BUT if that does not work what I learned from my 805G is best to go back to factory settings then add just the channels and not the PL codes but do them via the HT menu for the DCS. Hope that helps from me having same issue... Just a work around. Jack Edit: Then upload radio settings to software files.
  16. Welcome fellow Jeeper/Overlander to the forum... Glad you are here. This forum has a great group of helpful/friendly/mentors/coaches with a wealth of info.
  17. Just go talk to the mall management and help them fix this problem that his radio vendor needs to fix this so he does not get a fined. If I was a legit communication shop would fix it at no change if I s????up and mislead them. Be the hero, you may get free VIP parking for life. joking Jack
  18. You guys have confirmed we are good with GMRS as a camping and Jeeping venue. I have many post on doing a repeater in my RV... I think GMRS is great for us family wanting something for us and add repeater for more distance as needed. Welcome to GMRS Read the following to get your license... Yes get a GMRS radio mobile or handheld. I have two of these https://www.buytwowayradios.com/wouxun-kg-805g.html and we love them. Yes they are Chinese... I have a handheld CB for years in my Jeep and MH and have not used it in years... it is in storage box in the Jeep. I have used FRS over CB while Jeeping and camping with family and friends. Now GMRS radios are better and also GMRS certified radios do FRS as well so you can use can I still use the campground FRS radio that cost $20-30. Go get your license for GMRS (no test, just be legal) the fee today at $70 for 10 years will go down to $35 for 10 years... I guess this will happen in 30 to 60 days as rule change was approved and awaiting public comment to make it happen and FCC to change the website. Start here:https://apps.fcc.gov/coresWeb/regEn...JJ4XWDLLZnxFyv1y211XQQXL!773356295!-597742934 You will want to pick a GMRS license this is what to look for: Radio Service Code: ZA After you get your call sign... it will take 2-3 days for that FCC info is loaded up in my GMRS so you can become a member as myGMRS check to see if you have a license... As I said look at some of the great advise I got from the folks on this forum for doing repeater on my RV... These guys are Hams willing to help us non Hams out hoping we become Hams to keep their group alive and growing... Hope this helps you and others... Jack
  19. You would be the best tester for us guys... Looking forward to your eval... take your time... I just spent $300 on GR1225 repeater and add to that antenna and parts one needs to make it work... So no money in my honey radio budget for more equipment is done... I told my wife that my GMRS interest with G Daughter is cheaper then a mistress or getting full service at massage parlor... just joking my 25 yo daughter told me about these words... how surprised I was... I have been staying home to much and and need to get out more.... Doing honey do's and working missing cause me to miss out on this life style out of marriage... Jack
  20. OK I like what you are saying about NMO... I have a https://midlandusa.com/product/micromobile-mxta26-6db-gain-whip-antenna/ on a magnet base... I would just need a mount to side of my RV... any ideas??
  21. No smalpierre did not get it if you are talking about the one Steve sold to me. He a great guy and help to this newbie repeater guy... Yes not running full power... 25 and 10 if need be. Your comment are well received and like the way folks watch out for us newbies. Jack
  22. First welcome to the newbie club... I started in Nov and these guys are so good and friendly to help.... Correction... I have two KG-805G and I can still take advantage of talking to the cheap FRS campground walkie talkies... no license required... kids walkie talkie. If you do not have your call signs, go get your license for GMRS (no test, just be legal) the fee today at $70 for 10 years will go down to $35 for 10 years... I guess this will happen in 30 to 60 days as rule change was approved and awaiting public comment to make it happen and change the FCC website. Start here:https://apps.fcc.gov/coresWeb/regEn...JJ4XWDLLZnxFyv1y211XQQXL!773356295!-597742934 You will want to pick a GMRS license this is what to look for: Radio Service Code: ZA Hope this helps. Let me know how we can help you on this learning your trip, e.g. how to get repeater permission... check out some of the many post. FYI it takes myGRMS 2-3 days to valid your call sign to be a member.Jack
  23. Great info.... So I have a CHINOOK NOT FOR SALE anymore at https://www.jbewing.com/ForSale/RV/ look at the photos... I'm a visual guy... so show me some photos. Your reply post is a great start to see. The CHINOOK is fiberglass so what antenna do you suggest so I do not have to do a ground plane. Jack
  24. You are confirming everything the seller said and is doing... Not a eBay purchase, which I only use to get hard to find spare parts. Keep the advice coming. putting unit on the counter top with the AC on. Jack
  25. Well warm and sunny here for last today but I will wait for you to do it first so you can tell me what you did. I do not use my crank TV antenna, we have DirecTV for $5 a month add on reciever since some of the over the air TV shows are not worth the channel surfing. Jack
