New to GMRS - How to Get Access to Use a Repeater
MacJack replied to gmarman's topic in General Discussion
That is great history of FCC 2017... since I'm new, 2020, I would not know this... Thanks, Jack -
New GMRS Application Fee Reduced to $35 (from $70)
MacJack replied to intermod's topic in General Discussion
Welcome to the $70 Club who purchased at FCC current price and before the discount. I paid $70 end of Nov. The word on the street is 60 to 90 days from end of year as FCC published for public comments before turning on the switch to change price. Jack -
Welcome to the group Abock33. Enjoy yourself. Jack

Thanks for your attention and comment. It is a valid address for me. Just not my house. I read the rules.

O yes SteveM, and add if you wait and it expires you will get new call sign. -
So you are in Berkeley, CA... Thanks for the link to look up in FCC database. Jack

That is another good idea... I just did an FCC address change to my Police Hq. Jack
-
Thanks berkinet, I did an address change with FCC to police Hq. So I'm good to go now... So if you are a LEO PM me and will tell you what is up. Jack

Great... As for the RT76P is that the repeater or walkie talkies? If repeater would like to hear more of your experiences. Jack

Welcome to the group PapaT. Enjoy the fun. What radio did you get? Jack

Welcome new user to the group..... This is food for thought IMHO. Research what brand of radio you want to get for the new FRS/GMRS channels and hold off getting your license. It looks like it will be 30-60 more days for the $35 fee. So while you are waiting test your older iCom with your new purchase of a pair of FRS/GMRS radios. It is my understanding that the new FRS go up to 2 watts. I would let the kid play with the older iCom as they will be close, within eye sight which is the distant the .5 watt old iCom can go. So if you lose one or two ok... I have 4 bubble wrap Cobra and just use them for the kids fun time (lost two already). It almost like a wireless intercom in my house. While you are waiting to save $35 you can scan or monitor the GMRS channels. This will allow you to see what is going on while you can use it on FRS channels with your iComm. I started back in Nov 2020 and thanks to many of the good guys and information on this site have helped me so I can help other newbies... don't worry if I say something incorrect, they will step in and gently help. So the 3 month from my license I studying and asking question then got radio and been ready to go since Christmas. Hope this helps you and others reading. Remember whatever you pick is what is best for your needs, e.g. who know maybe your family dog will be on air... joking but know FCC all family members, I did not see anything saying no dogs or cats. Jack P.S. I have attached our family radio channel setup... It show the wattage for FRS and GMRS. If you look up some of my post you will see what radio I picked and why, it all personal. OK guys, it has been warm in WNC until snow comes next week. So need your input. I'm still looking at the https://shop.mygmrs....mrs-repeater-5w Will this work for my RV and or Jeep as a repeater/base with a Midland MicroMobile MXTA26 6db Gain Whip Antenna and Midland MicroMobile MXTA12 Antenna Mag Mount. What do you think... Rich if I purchase through myGMRS will you program it for me and support me. I sent one email question to Retevis which they replied with no answer and an offer of $80 off and 3 week delivery. I need to know I can ask a support question more than the $80 off. If I pull the trigger I do not want to wait 3 weeks thinking you have it in stock. Thanks, Jack

Welcome dchemphill1 to the group... I agree with WRAK968, just have set radio to scan.. If you hear some traffic on the any of the channel just say WRAK968 monitoring or radio check. Strike up a conversation... Good group of folks. And do look for repeaters in your area. As a newbie myself feel free to ask as this site gets new folks with the same question and these guys take turns answering my dumb questions. In fact I got so self-conscious I would Private Message the poster to get a better understanding. You will find all my mentors and coaches... Jack

I heard from end of year, need 60-90 days before all set. FCC has to go through all the steps of publishing for comments and paper pushing the doing the website change.

Welcome to the group SteveM. I live in a mountain area and have a great owner of a private repeater who allow our family access. I Jeep in the woods with limited cell service so I did GMRS with just a two handhelds. If you are high enough up the mountain range, you can put your own private repeater for you and family to use and if you which a select few others to use. The select others are who will come to your aid if need be. In Lscott last line, "If you have GMRS repeaters in the area you can access where you plan to operate then GMRS would be a better choice in that case." So start looking around for repeater and not all repeaters are listed so listen in and talk to other GMRS folks. Happy hunting for what is best for you. Jack

Nice reply... I agree. Now on a funny note... you said CCRs or Cheap Chinese Radios and here all the this time I was thinking it was Communist Chinese Republic because my adopted Chinese twin daughters are so happy being an American. I have to loosen up and not get to correct so to see the humor in it. Thanks, Jack

Thanks, I agree with you... she smarter then me.. Has a mind to remember things... Her only problem is does not know WHY this or that yet. Jack

I did look it up and my address in on it. Hope Rich see this post as I agree... as LEO they do not print our address on checks. Jack

Welcome to the group... I have the same handheld as Michael and as my first step into GMRS, I too got information overload. One thing I wanted is flexible use in car/Jeep/hiking/RV and home. Also wanted radio certified by FCC to be legal. I have kids and GMRS fits my needs to teach them. Check out other posts made for whatever radio you are looking at. You see radio is a personal thing and a lot of "IMHO". https://forums.mygmrs.com/topic/2373-type-accepted-transceiver/ Jack

Need suggestions - Cannot reach repeater
MacJack replied to danphuffman's topic in General Discussion
You are welcome... It took me a week plus over the holidays to find help as dealer was closed... It's an old computer think.. Delete and start over. Since I was a newbie the owner of repeater spent time educating me. -
Since I'm newbie, I watch all the post... It looks like your Icom was replace with https://www.buytwowayradios.com/icom-ic-f4001-03-rc.html . Saying New version with Lithium-Ion Battery and Charger!. IMHO.. I got a two starter radios, KG-805G which is a CCP radio. Icom is Japanese. I am an old Motorola guy but they're not the same as they were years ago with all the gotcha. Did you see the posts on review of radios? https://forums.mygmrs.com/topic/2183-brand-name-radios-proscons-thread-usednew/?hl=icom https://forums.mygmrs.com/topic/2183-brand-name-radios-proscons-thread-usednew/page-2?hl=805g&do=findComment&comment=20996 Check it out... a lot of reviews so search the forum. I use more then 16 channels. I set my radio up to standard FRS and GMRS as well as the repeaters I can connect to plus a few GMRS channel low and high power with PL codes that we use as a family. Also a few travel repeaters... That added 6 more channel slots. So I scan all channels and go to any of the ones I want to connect with... The family is scanning as well and I tell them what channel to go to.... Works great. Happy investigating... Whatever you pick will be the best for you, so let us know what you did pick... My job done, to show you why 16 channel is a limit to how we use GMRS radio for our family needs. Jack

Need suggestions - Cannot reach repeater
MacJack replied to danphuffman's topic in General Discussion
First thing that comes to mind is your PL code for Tx is not set or wrong one. Have you put your home radio to your father house using his setup (cable, antenna etc)? Jack Edit: Did you do this: -Have tried changing to a different radio, cable and antenna to confirm no hardware issues. I forgot to add that I had hitting the repeater with same radio and the bad radio kept forgetting to save code after turning off. Reinstalled factory setting and changed PL code and all is well. -
Thanks Michael. Question any advantage of having two different codes for Rx and another for Tx? I was playing with that with my two handhelds and could not get it to work. Jack
