  1. You are welcome... let me know if that helped or if you found a better fix... Are you on PC or Mac. I'm asking to see if I want to put CHIRP on my old PC with XP on it.
  2. I use the new version on a Mac with CHIRP. CHIRP has issues on Mac... the mouse does not line up with tip of arrow, more like the middle or body or arrow. So my work around is select a line and then click on "Properties" or go menu Edit down to Properties. Then from here do tab and will go to that first line, tab again goes to Name and you get 6 spaces to name it. Hope that helps. Jack
  3. I know this is an old reply on my part but just starting tomorrow with my G Daughter studying for Ham Ticket. So I saw the Wouxun KG-UV8H... and look forward to your comments for this radio for a Tech level 1 or General level 2 operator... Thank you for your open and honest reply, that is why I value you helping me in the GMRS and now in my Ham pathway. Jack
  4. It appears that the new $35 fee for GMRS licenses will take effect on April 19th 2021. Great news! for those up for renewal and those on the fence. https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2021/03/19/2021-03042/schedule-of-application-fees-of-the-commissions-rules Jack
  5. I agree with all the answers above... So we all are in the right community. The only three thing in my situation is as following: 1) Been in radios, CB and FRS (Jeeping and traveling) and with the kid playing around house and camping. Do mostly simplex but I have a family only repeater to play with until I get a better antenna. 2) Grand kids getting into radios (FRS as have several all these years) and our 12 yo grand daughter and I went into GMRS as she wants to go into Space Force. Now we are going to study this summer for our Ham ticket. 3) Have a great repeater in our area but not enough folks on it. Have a few other private family repeater in the area which are quite. So I found an app https://zello.com for my iPhone (also available for Android). I joined several of the nationwide repeater groups via the app. Not that busy but folks are logged on but crickets... I key in with name call sign and always get a reply from some folks still living in NY, NJ, PA etc (Locked In). Later on after time zone change I talk to a few in AZ etc. It is interesting to connect with others and use proper radio etiquette. So if you are hearing crickets give https://zello.com. In fact I see myGMRS but disconnected. Enjoy your radios, Jack P.S. I should suggest when you setup for a FREE account put your name in followed by your GMRS call sign on the same line. The channels are monitored and you have to validated by the monitors to make it work. Here a list of channels I have: gmrs, gmrs network, gmrs washington, GMRS-REPEATERS AND mygmrs.
  6. JT, welcome to the GMRS family, as a fellow newbie back in Nov. I'm willing to help you.. I have many mentor and coaches since I started. Now I'm in Western NC but lived for years in Northwest NJ and worked in NYC some 30 years ago. I can not speak to GM-30 but I have a 905G and love it... So do you have any repeaters in your area and are you signed up? Who in your family will be using the radio, e.g. teaching the grand kids proper radio on FRS channels. Feel free to PM me with your reply. Jack
  7. Grant, let us know how you like the 805G. I have stated this before... I have a pair of 805G before the 905G came out... 805G are mow for wife and kids but 905G is my radio of choice for the group scanning. Enjoy your radios and reaching the repeaters with all your radios. Jack
  8. MCGMCG, you are in the right group... enjoy the guys who want to help you.
  9. This happen to me on another model... so I set the code on the menu and not through CHIRP. Jack
  10. Thanks for sharing your plan... I learned more with the added details. Enjoy your camping out. Jack
  11. OK now I'm getting educated. So where do I find repeater in my area that are on Zello? I have Channels for gmrs 24 connected and for mygmrs discounted. Where do I go from here to find others.... OK to PM if we need to talk about it. Afterwards I will then tell all what I'm missing in understanding for their good. Thanks, you took the bait to help us folks who only know a fraction of what you know. Thanks, Jack
  12. OK I will bite...WRAK968 I just want to hear / monitor the GMRS conversation for entertainment purpose. So how does Zello work and it this the right venue? Thanks in advance for education us. Jack
  13. This post reminded me of the mental exercise I did some time back... Like you I spend most of my time outside. I have outside speakers driven by the RV stereo. So if I got a call I had to go inside to respond. Then I said what about just mounting a radio in outside entertainment center. That lead to "can have access if I'm driving" (I have a motorhome). So I settled on getting a HT like a KG-805G as good quality, water resistant, and can use it everywhere. Food for thought, IMHO. Jack P.S. I purchased a $400 repeater for RV and Ed Fong antenna attached to ladder.

Do you have a 805G... If so you will need to pick KG-816 radio format. Do a backup file before changing anything. Save As often with different name so you will know what backup file that worked in case you have to go back. Enjoy your 805G, great radio. Jack

Have you tried CHIRP software... I use it for the Mac and see it has a Windows release. https://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Home You will need to pick KG-816 radio format. 16. I got my VRX-7000 from https://www.ebay.com/sch/refitradio/m.html?ssPageName= and looks like price is up... You will need a programing cable and software with a PC with Window XP and above. I have TWO 805G and one new 905G... get the 905G is a great radio with group scanning... well worth the $30 over the 805G (which is $80 and 905G is $110).. The extra $30 you will thank me later... Or you can buy one of my 805G at $70... joking... I like the 805G for the kids to us on FRS. I can not help you with Midland products... all I know is they have issues with repeaters. So if you get a 805G or 905G, I can help you and show you how to connect to a repeater with permission from owner... Just PM me and we can talk and share config files... If you get either 805G or 905G get the following... https://www.buytwowayradios.com/wouxun-pco-001.html Just so you know I personally have had issues with a a 805G but later to see I did not do setup correctly, and BTWR said return it and they will replace it... but I found I screwed up the config file and reinstalled the factory file and all was well... So happy that they stand behind there products they are dealer for with someone like me who screwed up the config file. I also get all my accessories from them... If you want, we can have a phone conversation, just PM you phone number and best two dates and times for me to call you so we can spend time to got answer to your question... I'm a Newbie back in Nov and learned a lot from this forum and have some great coaches and mentors.. Way above my pay grade. So I can answer the easy questions. Just so you know I have 10 plus Newbies that I was able to help them get the knowledge so they could make the decision they needs for them and family on products, what there plans are. Jack
  17. Welcome to the forum... as an older newbie, I got my first repeater (VRX-7000) the other week. Learning a lot and meeting new and helpful folks. You are in the right place... read as much as you can, ask questions. In my case I would PM a poster to go deeper without boring others with my simple questions. I have a few "go to coaches and mentors". Jack P.S. Does anyone know where I can get a dealer manual for the VRX-7000. I have the consumer manual but does not go as deep as the software does running the exe in -D mode. Thanks.
  18. Terry, which backup do you want? 805G is in CHRIP (both Mac and PC) and radio mfg software is PC... The 905G is only available in the mfg PC software. So which do you want... Jack
  19. O well, it may have fixed it but BTWR will determine that as a fix. That is why they wanted my CHIRP factory backup to send to others in need. So I have file for both 805G and 905G if anyone needs it. Jack
  20. I agree, I had issue with my 805G and they offered to exchange it and I said wait let me restore from factory backup first... That fixed it, so called back and told them all is well. They where ready to stand behide products they sell. That why I keep coming back. Jack

  22. Good question... I'm a Part 95 guy following the FCC current (not past Part 90) equipment as my first GMRS radio was a KG-805G which I was looking for a Part 95 radio as my number one criteria. Now I really like the KG-905G for the channel grouping. Jack P.S. Sorry for delay, it is Spring time and been working on landscaping at home.
  23. You may want to see how you set that button up... do you have the PC software and cable to look or do it from the radio menu....
  24. Thanks n4gix... G Daughter and I will be studying this summer to seat for Ham Ticket. Jack
