I leave mine on for my younger son's FRS HT just so I know it's him.  My older son I trust with a GMRS HT and don't use it.  They are 6 & 8 so their voices sound very similar, plus it's not going to upset many people only being in FRS toy with very limited range.  It doesn't really bother me when people use it though.

SkylinesSuck got a reaction from bhawkins4194 in Interference coming from head unit in Jeep
I swapped sides on the CB and GMRS antennas today. Boom, no interference. I did notice though as soon as I provided power to the rear camera (which I had to disconnect during my rewiring) I got interference again even with the antenna on the other side, even when the backup camera wasn't "on." It has 2 12v inputs. One is the 12v trigger on the reverse wire, the other is switched 12v power to power it and so I can select the input and check on a trailer or whatever.

So for now, I put both power wires on the reverse switch so I only have to worry about interference in reverse which is a non-issue. I might try a different camera later to see if that makes a difference and then I can wire it up like before so I can check a trailer if needed. Not crucial though.

I've been listening to local fire and sheriff's dispatch in addition to air traffic control in my area as well. My kids get a kick out of hearing me at work on it.

Has anybody tried the Wouxan Bluetooth mic? I'm also looking for a good external speaker for it but I can't find what impedance the radio wants. It's just not loud enough in my noisy Jeep for me.

Not much of a trick and it may seem obvious to others, but I just noticed that this radio can monitor CB freqs. Gonna get it programmed up this weekend. I have a CB in my Jeep, but never use it or even turn it on really.  I like the idea of tucking the CB away in the center console and being able to monitor CB freqs just in case.  Then I can dig out the CB if I need.

I agree with that club president and the OP, that talking to jammers/dickheads just lets them know they're doing a good job and gives them the attention that their mother never gave them as a child, but I really want to hear more facts from @WRQC527 about the FCC pulling licenses for talking to unlicensed operators.

This sounds very serious!  Can you tell us how many have lost their license (ham or gmrs) for talking to an unlicensed operator in the last 10 years?

    Wrangler models:

After the CJ came the '87?-'95 YJ. Leaf sprung and weird square headlights.

Then came the best Jeep, the '97-'06 TJ. Coil sprung and proper round Jeep headlights. Just the right amount of modern but still stupid simple. They also made an "Unlimited" variant people unofficially call the LJ (long Jeep) which is stretched similar to the Scrambler. Also the Rubicon model had a better transfer case and locking beefier axles.

'07-'17? were JK's. These saw the advent of the 4 door option which has seen them explode in popularity. It also means a lot of people who would have otherwise bought an SUV to haul the kids around bought these, so a lot of earlier Jeep guys kind of look down on these. You'll see a lot more stupid low profile 24" rims or bought not built mall crawlers in these years. The JKU just means JK unlimited which is the 4 door version. JKUR = Unlimited Rubicon model JK.

The '18+ are JT (Jeep truck) and JL. They are nice and very expensive. I wouldn't want to scratch mine or roll it.

    Non-Wranglers:

XJ is the classic Cherokee. Super dope. I love these. '87-'06?

ZJ is the original Grand Cherokee. These are very cool. Because v8 and you can still wheel them

The pinout for the cable can be found on page 19 of the owner’s manual for the KG-1000G.

It isn't reinventing the wheel when the wheel doesn't exist in practical use to begin with.
Nobody is using 20.  And I never said anyone was using 19.  I just said I think it has a better chance because it is logical.  Someone brand new to GMRS would be more likely to first try 19 for a travel channel than 20.
I wish I had as much influence as you all seem to think I have.  But someone else here just might.  So you ought to be trying to convince him, rather than me.

SkylinesSuck reacted to axorlov in 50 watts simplex. I'm confused.
Bad advice. Absolutely do use 462.xxx0 MHz simplex with all 50W. Simplex users are entitled to use these frequencies. Repeater outputs are too entitled to use these frequencies. Use good operating practices to avoid interference.
Now, simplex on 467.xxx0 MHz is a big "f- you" to the repeater, because these are repeater input frequencies. Operating simplex on repeater input messes up repeater for everybody else who might use it at this moment. This is why simplex on 467.xxx0 MHz is not allowed by FCC (not to be confused with 467.xxx5 MHz).

SkylinesSuck reacted to mbrun in Are there any repeaters near Washington, DC?
In my continued understanding of the rules, Yes. If a repeater is used solely for communication by the owner and others covered by the owner’s license, my understanding continues to be that it does not need to ID. At the moment it switches from owner’s family communications to use by members of the public/different license then it is suppose to ID.

SkylinesSuck reacted to BoxCar in Whats with repeater users needing permission on GMRS?
This is untrue. A repeater owner is not responsible for any traffic carried through the repeater as the repeater has no control over the traffc. The responsibility lies solely with the traffic originator. The repeater owner would be responsible only if  they originated the improper transmission in the first place.

As a matter of decency, yes. Just know that it's not the law or anything.  If you put your listed or even unlisted repeater out there and somebody finds it and starts using it without permission (roger beeps and all), they aren't breaking any laws.  If they comply with all applicable regulations, don't expect the FCC to do anything but laugh at you over the phone when you call in to report somebody using your repeater without your permission.  Nobody owns any frequency on GMRS and if you put your equipment on the air, be prepared for anybody and everybody to use it, because they can.  Is it rude?  Yes.  I don't want people doing it, but they can.

It seems like a lot of people here also have Jeeps and maybe even it's the reason you are in to GMRS. Just curious who's got what equipment in what rig, how you have it mounted, and what you generally use it for.

I have a '98 TJ with a Midland MXT275 and the Midland 6db nmo antenna. I also have the same Cobra 75WXST and Firestick antenna I've had forever and have rarely used. Hopefully the GMRS one will get a lot more use. Planning to install another KG-1000 in the Jeep soon.

I was driving from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin today, and I was monitoring channels 15-22. I originally was monitoring all channels, but I was getting super-local chatter, and I was mostly interested in high-power simplex and repeater traffic.
When I heard something, it got me thinking. What repeater are they using? That gave me an idea for an app or a web page.
I downloaded the GMRS repeater database, and made some *really* crude JavaScript. I whipped this thing up in an hour, and it's embarrassing, but it works!
Showing is probably easier than telling...

It's just a web page that gets your location from the browser, and then looks up the closest repeater on each channel. Right now I'm only showing the basics, but there's no reason I couldn't show the "tone in" and also have a link to the repeater details.

Useful? Did I just reinvent something?
I didn't make it public since I'm not sure what the licensing is for the GMRS database. If someone knows, let me know. Or, if the owner wants to reach out, lets chat.

Here is a tip/trick we discovered last week getting 2 KG9000G's setup as a repeater.    It was super simple to setup if you watched the video from BuyTwoWayRadios.com or NotARubicon.   However one thing we noticed was we did not have a repeater tail.   This is disturbing because when you put a call out there you don't know if the repeater is up or not.   We found a strange menu option in the advanced settings called Repeat Hold Timer.  Here is what the manual says:
We were skeptical but we ordered the RT Systems cable and software and put in 700 milliseconds for this value in the software on the transmitter radio and now we have a tail.    Very useful.
