When I assembled my Comet mono-band 70cm antenna, I used anti-seize on the threads, tightened the connection firmly, then wrapped in 3m electrical tape, followed by a layer of coax-seal, then for the finish, put a nice bit of heat-shrink tubing over the entire junction.

Perhaps a bit of overkill, but seeing as how I was paying someone else to install the antenna on the steep roof of my house, wanted to protect it as well as I possibly could.

At sixty-nine I'm barely able to walk a straight line on a flat surface. My days of tower climbing and roof-running are barely visible in my rear view mirror.

I'm new to the GMRS world and I can honestly say I'm excited about the possibilities that I see. I've been monitoring here in the East TN area for a few weeks and there doesn't seem to be a lot of chatter. I have to imagine that it is the nature of GMRS. I suspect there are times when things pick up and get active, but that just isn't right now. For those that have been active for a while in the area, was GMRS able to be of use during the wild fires in Gatlinburg?

I'm also curious as to what radios people are using. I hope to get a few of the Midland 40w mobiles in the future, but one of the things I would like the ability to do, is save repeater settings instead of having to manually change the channel each time we venture into a new area (have them preloaded). That coupled with wanting something new, I simply haven't been able to find anything that fits the bill. I'd also like similar functionality from a handheld, those seem a little bit easier to find however. Bottle line, I'd love to know what you guys use, and why. Also, what are your main uses for GMRS? I work on technology and have seen major outages take large tolls on commercial communications methods. I see GMRS as a means to connect to my friends and family during those times as well as during times of duress, should ever have any.

My current "oldies" includes operational Patrolman Pro 1 (148 to 174) mhz.)  and a Patrolman Pro 2 (30 to 50 mhz).  State Patrol here used to be on 42.040 and 42.420.  Hot "skip" used to be on 39.500 and 39.580 .  Still use it occasionally for Red Cross ERV's operating on 47.420 in disaster areas.

I have something very similar to that I had forgotten about thanks for the reminder.. I’m more concerned about where they connect together and it being a fine thread thus the anti seize (the nasty silver stuff that gets over everything that is great for a prank underside of car door handle) lol

This product works extremely well on junctions as well as for in-line connectors. I have used this since the early 1980's and have never had a failure.

Well it won’t be to a service that can be overrun with all the toys on frs all the combo units that people never got licensed for.. ignore it and collect the bucks from those that do get licensed. And now with the for every regulation 2must disappear I don’t see much happening on this freq cb or ham. Heck look at the famous repeater in calif on 2 meter. That would be so easy to shut down one letter to the owner. And they avoid that. Well best to keep the trouble on one set of freq. hams have problems on 7.200 also 14.313 but that has calmed down though.. might be because of the bands have slowed down All just speculation on my thought process

In the early 1970's, in the midst of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and western countries, there was actually some international commerce trade taking place. An American tractor salesman and his wife were on a sales trip to Moscow. Between sales meetings, they had planned on doing some sight seeing near their hotel around Red Square. In order to see what the weather would be like the next day, they turned on the TV and found only one channel... the USSR Communist State Television Network, but the channel did have a weatherman named Rudolph Pochenko on the air. His forecast for the next day was for rain ending at exactly 10:06 AM and dry conditions after that. The next morning, when the salesman and his wife got up, it was raining, but at exactly 10:06 AM it stopped and cleared up. The salesman looked at his wife and said, "Rudolph, the Red, knows rain, dear."

The state EOC (MEMA) is way behind the curve on communications other than public safety VHF, satellite and WebEOC. They do have an FNARS station and there's some ham gear there but it's not used much and the HF side of things is woefully lacking. So, the quick answer is no. The counties are where the action is.

Hello, I'm Derek, WQZP709 (the ink is still wet on that ticket).  In an odd twist I was handed two UHF repeaters. One appears to be fully fictional and the other might be OK albeit it came with a report of a bad RF power supply (this is fixable), both need to be reprogramed. The obvious use for these two repeaters is GMRS and that opens the door for a whole bunch of learning curve. I'm hoping to tap into the vast amount of knowledge here on the forms and get a couple more repeats on the air for folks to use.
