  1. I don’t have any of these but I’ve been looking at them as well. Right now I’m leaning toward the Icom IC-2730A. 50 watts, duel band, made in Japan, duel receive (can cross band repeat) can be upgraded to Bluetooth if you want, relocatable face/controls and a MARS/CAP mod if you like and most of all for me Chirp. I really want my next radio to work with Chirp. Anyway I’ll be interested to hear what others have to say as well.
  2. @WRFN864 very nice install, this speaks to my OCD . @jbkalla That’s a really nice practical solution where space is an issue. I like that the screen is in an easy place to view and operate.
  3. I didn't see any mention of detachable antennas... The way I read this was OP was not looking at a different detachable antenna but rather putting the existing part of the radio that is the antenna as well as the radio body outside the vehicle for better range while using the mic inside the vehicle. So the answer is yes it would help with the range that is until this thing takes a beating outside at 60 miles an hour and you couldn't see the screen. Thus my response of I don't think it was intended for this purpose. queue footage of radio flopping around in the wind
  4. It’s really just an FRS hand held radio with a speaker mic. Put the radio in your pocket with the mic attached where you can hear it and use PTT. I don’t believe they intended this as a vehicle mounted radio.
  5. I’ll second that.
  6. Thanks for the alternative link. Scadacore was the tool I always used.
  7. Could be. I’m using an iPad and a Mac but not the app. It would be worth giving @rdunajewski a shout out about the app though to help him flush things like that out. As for the repeater reach check out this tool. It can give you an idea of line of site and if you might be able to get there or not, though sometimes I can hit repeaters that look like I shouldn’t be able to.
  8. It shows it on mine. Maybe it's a cookies thing, but it's there.
  9. Shaw Butte is still on the site and the map. Select stale repeaters via the gear in the upper left corner of the map. Repeaters fall into the stale category if the owner hasn’t updated the info in over a year.
  10. Great radio, great price. You should post it in the classified section.
  11. Good info from @Sshannon above. Channel 20 isn't a repeater channel it's 462.675, which is the same receive frequency of channel 28 or as some manufactures refer to repeater channel 20. As @Sshannon explained GMRS radios have the offset built in to their repeater channels. By programming your tones in the appropriate repeater channel you will then have the offset (467.675) already set by the radio. Hope this helps.
  12. It looks like you are in an area with quite a few open repeaters. To figure out what’s going on let’s get some more info and maybe we can narrow down a solution. Are you hearing other people on a repeater? What radio do you have and how are you programming it? Are you using Chirp?
  13. Jet lag, I'm lagging today, come on kids don't lag behind...
  14. This is a great question. I think if you are in an area where you have simplex frequencies open to use and you can use the lower power successfully for your contact it makes sense to do so. It reduces your own exposure to interference. Use what you need to get the job done and not more. While some inadvertent interference is inevitable having a separate set of repeater frequencies would certainly help eliminate a lot of it. This is where I think linked repeaters is also an issue. You may be stepping on people you don't hear who are on simplex. I don't know how successful you would be getting this done but separate repeater frequencies is the best reason I have heard for expanding GMRS frequencies
  15. You inferred then if you prefer.
  16. Said the guy that identifies as "123"... I wouldn't say so far you have a knack for reading the room. Lots of very helpful Hams here and Steve is one of the most active and helpful. I have yet to see anything at all helpful come from you. you came here telling people not to pay taxes, called them foolish, comical and naive. All this before the whacko comment. So yeah go back and look further to see where it started. If the shoe fits. Now you're telling @marcspaz what's relivant... well I'd say you might want to try turning things around but I think the ten count has begun and the bell is about to ring. Good luck I hope you work it out.
  17. Seriously asking where is this happening? Is this in a big city? Industrial area? Other than the Walmart parking lot Murs around me is pretty darn quite.
  18. It also could be said it is foolish to state what others believe or don't. Sure a vilolation is still a violation but going two miles over the speeding limit probably won't get the same attention as going a hundred over and nor should it. Comical of course. I thought that was clear
  19. Ah, I see. You were proposing it as an alternative to the aforementioned voice scrambling.
  20. Sorry I miss read 12 as 120 (Tacoma’s have that as well). I was typing while the dog was begging for steak from the bbq. I didn’t mean to over complicate it. Now about that cup of water, is it half full or?
  21. Just as your radio has a TX and RX so does the repeater. It’s basically a radio as well, one that forwards what it receives on one frequency 467.xxx to another 462.xxx.
  22. It’s a conscious choice. So the party on the other end knows if someone is on the channel in simplex and/or the repeater.
  23. Whatever you do don’t hook it up to the 120 volt (unless you like smoke). These radios are designed to run off the car’s battery. You can plug it into the 12 volt dc cigarette lighter type outlet if you want to keep it temporarily installed or for a more permanent use run the wires back to the battery, red + terminal for red wire and battery grounding terminal for the black wire. FYI I don’t remember what the fuse size is for the cigarette lighter outlet, check your Toyota manual if you decide to use that. The fuse size should be equal or greater than the radios 15 amp. I believe it is.
