No removable battery either, so you can’t carry a spare. -

I’ve been pretty disappointed with Midland’s customer service, but this looks good.
I wish they did a MTX575 with the ability to program 200-300 channels and give them names.

I agree. I was surprised to find that it worked better than my Midland ghost antenna. -

The Larsen LP450NMO we installed on the Jeep JK is working great. We hit a repeater about 32 miles out, in the hilly terrain of Western Washington, with us being down in a valley with lots of overhead power wires.
Mounting on the cowl turned out better than expected. We’re very pleased.

Those are not too shabby either. I used to call those hockey pucks. For UHF and 700/800 Megs they work pretty good. The ones designed for 150 Megs not so hot for Farz. Short range Ok.

Hoppyjr reacted to n2877 in New CB. First Impressions
After reading all these post, Im starting to miss my Cobra 29 radio. I even had fun with the PA function on it. I need to get a cb radio. I will get one that has the PA function on it for sure. Its easier for other drivers to hear you telling what the did wrong and how stupid it was with the PA then just me yelling😁

Hoppyjr got a reaction from RayP in Would like to know what radio you are using
In the Toyota 4Runner:
* Midland MTX575
* Until today I had the Midland “Ghost” 3db antenna mounted in the rear roof, but today I swapped it for the Larsen puck style NMO, which is shorter and seems to actually perform better here in the mountains. Model LP450NMO
In my son’s Jeep JK (next weekend)
* Midland MTX275
* Pulse-Larsen LP450NMO - mounted to the top of the central speaker bar. It will clear both hard & soft tops and work fine.
Handhelds:
I picked up the KG-UV9GX, but haven’t programmed it yet. It’s wearing the Smiley Slim Duck antenna
We have maybe six or seven Baofeng UV-9G radios and the gang charger. A couple wear Smiley Slim Duck antennas, the rest have Nagoya 701 or 771.

Here is a link to a Reddit post about that radio.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Baofeng/s/SxrCkiGYV1
I’d first Google and try the factory reset settings for other Baofeng radios, to see if any of that works.
Another option is to try programming software like RT Systems, to see if you can get in that way.
It seems to be one of the less common radios, so likely not as much info out there.

That sounds serious! What happens if someone uses one of these amps on their GMRS radio??
-
Hoppyjr reacted to tcp2525 in Gasket on NMO connection
No! Absolutely no. The NMO is designed to get its ground from underneath the sheet metal it's mounted to. The top side of the sheet metal is usually painted and will insulate. If you want to assure a good ground, rough up the bottom of the sheet metal with sand paper or wire brush. I've installed dozens of NMO mounts through the roof of vehicles and none of the above mentioned is really necessary. I never had grounding issues.

Hoppyjr reacted to WRQC527 in 95.1761 slightly confusing
This is the exact reason that I and all the people in my circle of amateur radio friends, which is quite a few, have made the MARS/CAP mod on all our mobile and handheld radios. Most of us use Yaesu radios. We're not interested in debating the nuances of FCC Parts 90, 95, and 97 and how they govern what device we carry. We're interested in communicating and not being stupid about it.

Hoppyjr reacted to OffRoaderX in 95.1761 slightly confusing
If the FCC doesn't even care (based on their contacts/enforcements), then why would I care?
-
Hoppyjr reacted to WRXP381 in 95.1761 slightly confusing
These debates are getting soo old. If it says gmrs on it, it says part 95…. Or it’s locked to gmrs “channels” to tx on its a gmrs radio. If it doesn’t or isn’t it’s not. Pure and simple. In the end who cares. It does not matter at all if you have an older, rare or different duel cert radio or not. Just don’t be stupid. No one will ever care or ever know as long as you don’t toss it up on some forum and talk about it. I’d venture to say a HUGE majority of repeaters and radios that are used on gmrs are not certified.

Hoppyjr reacted to marcspaz in Jeep antenna mount
I used that exact combo for awhile and it worked pretty well. I wouldn't waste effort or money adding a ground plane kit. There is plenty of reflective surface for the antenna to work. I stopped using it because, like @kidphc, I had an SWR that was a shade over 2:1 on the repeater frequencies. That is just how the antenna is tuned.
-
Hoppyjr reacted to nokones in Jeep antenna mount
For Trail Comm. it really won't do diddly to add a ground plane and most likely you won't be shooting skip anytime soon on GMRS.
On my 23 IZARUBICON 2 Dr. I run a glass-mount Larsen antenna on my rear glass with great success. If I remember correctly, my VSWR on 462 MHz is 1.12:1 and on 467 MHZ is 1.6:1. As for my farz, I don't know what the difference would be in comparison with either a quarter wave or my Laird 1/2 wave 2.4 dB gain omni antennae. I just don't see much differences.
As for my CB antenna, I am using a 5 Ft. Firestik II Tuneable Tip antenna and it is mounted on my Mopar Heavy Duty Rear Spare Mount Bracket. Mopar provided the means of mounting an antenna near the door hinge.

Hoppyjr reacted to OffRoaderX in Midland GXT67 PRO
If you are inferring that the radio cannot be programmed via the keypad, you would be wrong.
You are also wrong about it not being much different from any other radio..
But other than that, you're 100% right.
-
Hoppyjr reacted to Sshannon in why are there 2 channels shown on grms radios?
Many radios have the ability to monitor two channels. Those are the two.

No, but I do have strobes for 2 of my vehicles because I do volunteer field communications work for for DHS/FEMA, DoD/USMC, the Commonwealth of Virginia, Loudoun county and Price William county. However, they are hidden. Not a 'wanna-be' look.
