  1. looked at the repeater page as well; honestly, i'd lean a little more toward @WRHS218's interpretation. given the information present. if it were requests disabled and tones unlisted, i'd agree with @gortex2, that it was intended to be closed/private. However, requests disabled+tones posted more says to me "it's open, you don't need to send requests". that said, it'd still be courteous to call on the system when in range and request permission that way alternately, it looks like the owner's callsign is also his username, so you may have luck reaching out to him with a private message on here (the forum). I know i get an email when i get a private message, so that may be a way to get through. that might also be a good route if you're going to be out that way regularly and want to set up a membership to support the system (since the links are broken).

  2. I just saw this when I replied. I didn't realize that when Access requested were disabled it meant the repeater was closed. I think if I were the owner and didn't want others to use it I wouldn't publish the tones, although it is easy enough to figure that out. Thanks gortex2 for learning me something.

  3. I looked up the repeater here and the Access Requests have been Disabled By Owner. You have the tones for RX & TX. If it were me I would put the repeater in my radio and when I got in range I would ask for permission on the repeater.

Yep, Channel Mode is correct. It's just hard to understand.

    Repeater Issue

That's not for a KT8900D. The KT8900D is an amateur radio. Not a GMRS radio. From the manufacturer.... Dual Band: VHF and UHF / 144 / 430Mhz TX amateur band version: 144-146 MHz et 430-440 MHz RX: 87.5-108MHz, 136-174MHz, 400-480MHz, 220-260MHz and 350-390MHz The QYT KT-8900D covers RX and TX 144-146MHz and 430-440Mhz in analog FM mode with 25 watts (VHF) and 20 watts (UHF) and VFO button for channel or frequency change.

    Repeater Issue

That radio isn't compatible with GMRS. As pointed out above, its a Ham radio, not a GMRS radio. It can be modified to work on GMRS, but there is no soft-mod. It requires a technician or someone technically skilled with the proper tools to both add and remove some components from the main board. Once that is done, it needs to be reprogrammed. Given it costs about $45-$50 to do the mod (assuming you already have all the tools) and its only an $80 radio... almost no one does it. I would recommend you just buy a GMRS radio.

  9. A friend purchased us both one of these and they make a huge difference on the road. I tried it out sitting on the aluminum roof of my UTV in my yard and it allowed me to hit a repeater I couldn't hit with the HT antenna.

Scanners can monitor the repeater input freq just as easy. I have repeater input freq programmed on my radio for RX as I can then scan for the tone/dsc for that repeater input as well.

  11. I just received this antenna from Amazon 2 days ago to pair with my UV-9G and GMRS-V2. It worked very well attached to a pizza pan in my front window, but it REALLY shines stuck to the roof of my SUV. I have three repeaters in my area that I've been *barely* able to connect to, but not communicate through due to static. I can now transmit and receive clearly on all three repeaters with no problem.

  12. Yeah, I had the 275 before and will be mounting it in my wife's Jeep. I love the 2 channel monitoring of the KG-1000G but I really miss the quality feel of the 275, and the simplicity. I also miss the loud speaker, as I mentioned before. Its just a better radio for a Jeep. If I was a big time GMRS hobbyist, the Wouxun would be better.

  16. I agree... 50 watts is not needed. If you had not made a purchase yet and it fell into the "nice to have" category, that would be fine, but there is very little range difference between 15-20 watts and 50 watts. You probably wouldn't notice in the hills and mountainous areas. People who benefit from the additional power will be those who are out in open areas (water, desert, flat country/farm lands). Especially if they are using a large tower or have an elevation advantage and are trying to communicate with a party with a similar setup. As mentioned by @gortex2 if you are wheeling with people who are using handhelds, it won't matter anyway.

  17. The MTX115 and MTX275 is ideal for your off road adventures. People get worked around the axles on 50 watts. The mobile is easier to use and drive and talking to the jeep behind you 5 watts is fine.

  18. Well, I guess I did it backwards! I got my license, bought a couple of handhelds, and then bought a Midland MXT115 for my Jeep. For my needs I didn't feel like I needed 40 or 50 watts, as I'll mostly use it when wheeling. Lots to learn here though!

  19. We need to be supportive of them coming out. It takes a huge amount of courage to face yourself and openly admit to who you are. That courage needs to be admired. Oh, wait... you are talking about pulling your radio and getting a different one. Nevermind. I was picturing the Village people all dancing around with the KSG1000 radios with Diana Ross singing her coming out song. Sorry.

    GMRS travel channel

Based on my subjective and nerdy calculations, there are a little over 10,000 licensed GMRS users that are affected by this, which works out to about 7% of the United States licensed GMRS users. I say we (the 93%) use channel 19 anyway hahaha

    What NOT to do

I just finished a conversation on one of my repeaters about the antics of an operator on the system last night. Like I personally have any control over it. But then I realized I do have control of it. By yanking the cord out of the wall feeding power to the repeaters. At this point Johnstown675 and Johnstown600 (the linked repeater to midwest) are off. And may well be for good. So here's what NOT to do. When you are a GMRS user, and you are using someone else's repeater FOR FREE because they make a serious effort to provide and maintain equipment for you to use. Don't complain to them that someone 3 states away on a linked system was acting the fool, cussing and drunk on the repeater system. It's a REALLY good way to make them mad. For them to decide it's NOT worth the trouble to keep the equipment on the air and then decide to just pull the plug. For those of you in this area that were using the link and the 675. The jury is still out on what I am gonna do going forward. You have ONE person to thank for it being gone. And that's for you to figure out. But I ain't listening to people complain to me about the actions of another on a linked system. And if you happen to be the guy that complained.... CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! You got the repeaters shut down. SO there will be no more bad words on the repeater, since there will be no repeater. RANT OFF>...

  22. Yep, I don't think that will present an issue, I got very familiar with the Retevis software yesterday

  23. at the time the thread was started, the 701C was the better option for GMRS (being tuned for 455mhz) compared to the normal Nagoya 701 or 771 which are tuned for 430mhz. The 701g & 771g are a step better for GMRS, but they didn't come onto the market until mid 2020. https://www.buytwowayradios.com/blog/2020/07/new-gmrs-antennas-from-nagoya-are-now-available.html

    GMRS travel channel

Just remember, that as predicted in the proclamation video, "some people" will always and forever spew reasons why Ch19 (any channel, actually) is not "the right choice", and will argue about it as they have for years, accomplishing nothing.. Those people are not invited to join with the rest of us normal people on Ch19.. They can go talk to themselves on some other channel.. My name is Queen Randy and I approve this message.

  26. I am new to GMRS (finally), and have mobile and portable communications as of right now. Hoping to have a base set up before the end of summer. I have a UHF base antenna. I just need to get the coax and radio and get my antennas mounted permanently. I currently monitor all 8 GMRS channels on my scanner at home in addition to some Ham radio repeaters local to me and simplex calling channels. I have the same ability when I am mobile. I try to stay prepared if anyone uses them for help. I have not noticed any active repeaters except for Woodstock, Belfast, and there is one other local to the Belfast area but I cant remember what the frequency is off the top of my head.
