    Elimination of the FCC?

And yet they drive on interstate highways. Seems a little hypocritical.

Hi Murph, Welcome to the forums. You can have two way communications between you and your entire family without setting any tones. That’s easiest.

    Stun and Kill Function

Once again, Stun and Kill have absolutely nothing to do with reducing your transmission power. Stun disables transmission entirely. Kill disables transmission and reception.

  4. That configures when your radio sends its ID, which is called by various things: ANI, caller Id, etc. Most of us simply leave it off.

  5. Who gave the right to the Biden administration to raise the price of toilet paper? It's getting cost prohibitive to take my morning dump. I'm not going back to the good old days where corncobs were your first choice when you got to the last page of the Sears catalog. I have no problem with the FCC because I follow their rules and guidelines. I don't se an issue here.

    Elimination of the FCC?

No FCC, means more radio frequency interference, higher telephone bills, and more scam telephone calls 24/7, and undesirable language on TV and Radio. Doing away with the FCC was a stupid suggestion.

Welcome @Murph62. You got it right. Simplex (radio to radio) doesn’t require tones but if you do have them set then you want both radios to be set the same. Tones can open squelch on repeaters so you can use them. They can also prevent you from hearing others that don’t have the same tones set. Others without them set will still hear you.

  13. Thankfully, you're right. Unfortunately, we still have to deal with them on the internet.

  15. Menus 23 and 24 (in the Parent manual I referenced a few days ago) set the Caller ID and control when your Caller ID is sent, which I suspect is the same as your ANI. The pages (49-51) on remote control that I screenshot and posted back then describe the process of Stunning and Killing, but they refer to a value that I don’t find elsewhere in the manual. They refer to “Controlled Code”. Maybe it’s the ID of the unit that is sending the Stun, Kill, Monitor, or Inspection code. I really don’t know. And on this unit it doesn’t appear there’s a disable function so you’ll definitely want to change the ID.

  16. Interesting thread I clicked on, only because today I received a call for a lost APX4000 Model 2 on a trunked radio network. I had to explain why I was only going to"Transmit Inhibit" the radio, as then they usually end up at one of our repair shops, when someone notices they receive, change channels, and otherwise appear to function until you try to transmit. Many organizations in commercial radio shy away from stun and kill, and the use of system keys helps keep your radios/programming within your organization. It would be interesting to know if CCR's now have this as well? Some do most everything else as found on commercial radios.

    Elimination of the FCC?

Ah yes. The infamous CB Keydown competitions. I've said it here before, I'll say it again. Keydown competitions are what's missing from GMRS.

    Elimination of the FCC?

With no FCC then all bands would be like CB is now days or how FRS can be at times..

    Elimination of the FCC?

I'm not a big fan of government intervention but the government does have it's place and serves a purpose. @PRadio pointed out some very good reasons why we need the FCC. Without them, you probably wouldn't be able to watch the big game on your TV.

  23. Amen to that. We don't need DMR in GMRS.

  24. Oh, I've had more than one incident with them. I have a commercial account with both FedEx and UPS. And I much prefer UPS. I only use FedEx if a customer requests it. Bottom line, I hate inefficiency, laziness, slackers, and other burdens on society that think the world owes them a living. The whole workforce has deteriorated after the China virus was unleashed. Just my opinion.

  26. New to the website. It’s a wonderful tool and super easy to use. I am loving the app and thanks for allowing us to try beta. Out of all the FCC and Ham radio websites you have created the cleanest and easiest to navigate site. Excellent work!! Enough typing…time to get one the air!!

  27. I got into GMRS because I needed another layer of communication with my family. I also understood the limitations of FRS, and discovered the possibility of repeaters for GMRS. I stumbled into a working repeater, which will be programmed this week. There are no other repeaters that get into the country I typically venture into. I was just on a mountain top this morning, and am starting the process of the application for a solar site on that mountain with the BLM. I tested my V-1 radios to the house HT to HT and had clear communication at about 15 miles with a friend who lives 4 miles south of me. This repeater, will give an incredible amount of coverage to where I spend about 80% of my time in the hills. Add to that, cell phones and SPOT, and I am set quite well communication wise.

  28. I am fortunate that a local amateur radio operator has a repeater available. It is done properly on a 400 ft tower. The repeater covers the entire county and portions of adjacent counties. My initial itch for my own repeater was because I live in a low lying area and needed help getting over a hump to reach my wife’s mobile when she is at work. Once I discovered the local amateur radio club, I joined and got access to the repeater. It eliminated all desire to set up my own repeater. Like you mention, GMRS is not wildly popular. For the most part it is only we two who use it, with the occasional visit from one of the hams. If the repeater owner ever decides to stop maintaining the repeater, I may very well become interested in building my own again. Fortunately, my coverage needs are modest, about 10 miles. We probably could blast through most of that distance on 40 Watt simplex, except for the hump right in the middle.

  29. Thanks for the replies! I've actually installed a strategically placed 'mobile' antenna (small 5" wire antenna) above my roofline that works well. It's right next to an approved HDTV antenna and is so small that you can't really notice it! We'll see how long that lasts! Since my area is elevated in relation to the Tucson valley, I have a small advantage. Anyhow, my ultimate goal is to move to a non-hoa community which will solve many of those issues. For now, I'm hitting the local repeaters and getting good simplex range as well. I like that I can communicate with my son when he treks into the desert near my home. Cell phones are good but there's nothing like instant communication! I don't plan on getting into the other bands but I do remember how I used to marvel at my granddad's HAM equipment that could reach to other countries! I also want to say that I think this is an awesome website with great info (especially repeater info) and have to really say 'hats off' to the creator! I'll be a member as long as the site is around. thanks again for the input folks - it's nice to have people with knowledge that I can turn to when I need help!

  31. I wonder if you people know that stun and kill function is by digital means, not analog. As in if you are using a DMR, NXDN or P25 unit and someone wants you not on that talk group. There is no analog means of doing that for the reason that in the digital modes your radio is transmitting a unit id number. In analog it doesn't.
