    KG-935G PLUS

Quick note: There is no minimum age for family members. Which reminds me, before I got into GMRS I asked a user why he had the radios for his kids when they could just use cell phones. He said, "I don't want Junior dropping a $500 phone over the side of the canoe."

  3. Just say the letters and numbers as if you were spelling in a spelling bee. There’s no “official” protocol. If you decide to speak phonetically my opinion (worth nothing) is that you should use the NATO phonetics. They are designed not to be easily confused. For instance, in your example you use the words sour and double, both of which can be easily confused with other words flower and bubble on a poor connection. The NATO words would be Delta and Sierra and there are no other words in the NATO alphabet that sound similar enough to be confused. But it’s entirely up to you.

  5. I use plain spelling unless the person on the other end has trouble understanding me. Then I use the NATO phonetic alphabet to clear it up. B and V sometimes get confused and also D and T.

  6. @numnutz6383, Okay I gave this a shot in Chirp. I changed the frequency limit to 485.000 on UHF RX, uploaded to the radio and I can now set the radio with a RX of 484.4000. Of course this is RX only. Give it a shot and see if you pick up the station.

    3 points
  8. Actually, this particular thread is pretty boring. Not really popcorn-worthy if you ask me. Where things really get entertaining is when folks start arguing over FCC rules. The fur flies there, I'll tell you what. You'll need one of those extra-large buckets that the movie theaters let you refill for free.

until its online and working i wouldn't register it. too many get added then never make it to the real world.

  10. I was wrong. After looking more carefully I found this: § 95.931 Permissible CBRS uses. The operator of a CBRS station may use that station to transmit two-way plain language voice communications to other CBRS stations and to other stations that are authorized to transmit on CBRS frequencies. (a) Emergency communications. Any CBRS channel may be used for emergency communications or for traveler assistance. (1) Operators of CBRS stations must, at all times and on all channels, give priority to emergency communications. (2) CBRS Channel 9 may be used only for emergency communications or traveler assistance. It must not be used for any other purpose.

  11. Once again, that’s not how regulations work. If it’s not part of the regulations, it cannot be part of a citation, because citations require a reference to the rule that’s being violated.

    KG-935G PLUS

The KG-935G+ is overkill for kids and people that are not into radio. I would get one of the lower models like the KG-805G or maybe the KG-905G instead. They are simpler and less intimidating while being very capable as well as less expensive. They are all commercial quality and very durable.

  18. I think it was the tones, I remember looking over them and thinking it all looks the same, I went tone on all as opposed to tsql on the two that are listed as such, for troubleshooting purposes. I decided to upload the file from the radio to check it, and sure enough, that repeater somehow was set to cross. I reset it, and I will try again the next time I am out that way. Also, FWIW it was the rx tone that was set wrong when it got placed into cross mode, I think that might explain the repeater opening but no audio coming through like you said.

  19. I mean, they didn't do it until 4 decades after the rest of the nations with CB equivalent services did it. If the FCC kept with the times, GMRS as we know it might not exist. Now that I think about it, 27 MHz FM with 50w and repeaters doesn't sound like a terrible idea from a technology standpoint, but it hasn't been very popular on 29 MHz. So, we may have ended up with modern GMRS regardless.
    2 points
  20. I think that's because mobile (in a vehicle) or portable (walking around) can't be connected to a landline. As in other places in the regs, the modern wireless technology isn't addressed.

  21. PL-259 is simply the connector, also referred to historically as the UHF connector. The actual cable type should be marked on the jacket of the cable.

  22. Doesn’t exactly say that either. Go back and read Marc Spaz’s excellent summary on one of the first pages. But the most important requirement is this: § 95.1749 GMRS network connection. Operation of a GMRS station with a telephone connection is prohibited, as in § 95.349. GMRS repeater, base and fixed stations, however, may be connected to the public switched network or other networks for the sole purpose of operation by remote control pursuant to § 95.1745. Notice also that mobile and portable radios are not addressed at all.

  24. This doesn’t make sense even from a conspiratorial perspective. Why would a friendly fcc employee throw a life preserver to the repeater owner and then cite the users? Second, show me a regulation that says it’s forbidden to use a repeater that’s linked.

  25. Absolutely. However, if I am in a topic that involves "A", the OP's Q is on topic "A", and you dont like "A", STFU. Let the folks that use "A" help. Just dont pop in and stutter that every post. Dont like CHIRP, fine, dont like whiteclaw, fine - Just dont have to remind us every time you dont like it. i hated Grindr at first, but later I had the room for it, for example.

  28. I know the station in question is from Puerto Rico since he states it in his transmissions. The President George FCC is the only radio with all modes that I have found so far that is legal to use for the CB bands. I could always open up my Xiegu G90 too

  31. I think President is the only company making FCC type approved radios with all three modulation types. The President George FCC is a great radio with all 3. So is the McKinley II FCC. I'm not sure if there are any other brands, but it would be fun to see what folks can find.

  33. You’re correct. The convention of using Channel 9 for emergency purposes is not part of the FCC regulations. What I said above is incorrect. Channel 9 is reserved in regulations. § 95.931 Permissible CBRS uses. The operator of a CBRS station may use that station to transmit two-way plain language voice communications to other CBRS stations and to other stations that are authorized to transmit on CBRS frequencies. (a) Emergency communications. Any CBRS channel may be used for emergency communications or for traveler assistance. 35. just because it comes with a cable doesn't mean the radio is Chirp supported. What radio are you talking about? The thread's about an RB91 digital repeater, ostensibly. I doubt that's what you're trying to program in Chirp....

  36. All of these replies regarding the use of CHIRP has been entertaining. I use chirp and its always worked well. I am on a MAC so have fewer options. Bottom line, use what works for you. The best piece of programming software is the one that works for you in your situation. I will admit there is a little decoder ring regarding chirp, however posts in this thread has pointed to manuals, and given good info regarding usage/programming of TONES. Best of luck.. regards

  37. i believe you are dismissing the Shannon Effect in stating you need solid copper core coax. The Shannon Effect (not our Steve's notes) states the higher the frequency, the electrons move closer to the surface of the conductor. That's one reason some coax has steel or aluminum cores and just a copper shell. The key figure to check in the cable's specs is the velocity of propagation along with the cable's loss.

  38. To program skipped channels wirh Odmaster, select the channel you’d like to modify, go down to “Scan Add” and select “on” to scan that channel or “off” to skip. Likewise, to program on the radio, in Menu #16 “Scan Add” select “on” to scan that channel and select “off” to skip.

I have several rifles that use Magpul 5.56 magazines. How dare the 9mm magazines do not work on those rifles, therefore, the 5.56 is not valid. You use what works for what you need.

  40. I bet you already do! Part of what makes Chirp useful, but also sometimes difficult to understand, is that it has to store information for hundreds of different radios in a kind of least-common denominator database. Once you understand that you can program all of those radios.

  46. Last night at 2310 hrs my son-in-law called me and woke me up. He said he and my daughter were outside watching a wildfire on a mountain that is less than two miles from my house. I got up and went into the living room and could see the flames. I turned on my 935G+ and moved to the Cal Fire Command frequency and the County Sheriff's frequencies. We talked for a few more minutes about evac routes which would be different for both of us and chose a GMRS channel for contact in case we had to leave. I called a neighbor who lives close and let him know and heand his wife came up to our house as they didn't have a view of the incident. As we got settled in our dark living room I turned on my second 935G+ and brought up the Cal Fire tactical channels and found which two they were using. At that point We could hear the local SO as they were trying help get gates open on the dirt roads crossing private lands for Cal Fire. We could here Cal Fire setting up the Incident Command post and after units from as far as two hours away arrived we could here the fire teams talking to each other as they reached and worked the fires. My neighbors left at a 0130 and my wife went to bed at 0230. I sat in a dark room watching the fire and listening to the fire fighting activities until the sun came up a couple of hours ago. There are a lot of radios that can do what the 935G+ can do as well as and maybe better. However, I had all of the frequencies programmed into both radios in advance and they are always charged up and ready to use. As I sit here this morning looking at the burn area so close to my house and listening to the fire fighters give turn overs to the next shift I realize how important having a good radio/radios can be in emergencies. Went tend to use our radios as a fun tool or toy. We like to get on line and argue and complain about things that don't really matter, comparing the size of our antennas. Program your radios with frequencies that can help in an emergency and keep them charged up. Learn to use your equipment and have a plan. The fire was burning 1/4 mile below six towers on the mountain top that have the local amateur repeaters and a lot of commercial antennas (no GMRS repeaters). Thankfully the fire didn't go that direction. The fire went in the opposite direction from us. I can no longer see the fire so it looks like we are safe this time. At this point no lives were lost and no permanent structures were destroyed with no firefighter injuries. I now return you to the latest thread on FCC ambiguity...

    KG-935G PLUS

Pine and cedar trees are the worse when it comes to absorbing UHF radio waves. Our repeater range is limited to about 30-35 miles when using a mobile radio depending on location. There are a lot of hills and valleys with old growth hard wood trees along with lots of cedar trees. Our GMRS repeater antennas are at 400 feet and our 2m and 70cm repeater antennas are at 900 feet on the same tower. I live 21.5 miles away from the tower. It is hit or miss on if I can get into the 70cm and GMRS repeaters with a hand held radio from my house, it depends on band conditions. I normally do not have any problems getting into the 2m repeater from home with a hand held. I have several hand held radios and the Wouxun KG935G Plus and KG-Q10H work the best for me. I have an Icom IC-T10 (entry level) along with an Explorer QRZ-1 (rebranded TYT UV88) along with several Baofeng radios. The IC-T10 and QRZ-1 aren't much better than the Baofeng radios when it comes to RX/TX clarity and picking up interference. I have to agree to reach out to the local GMRS repeater owners and your local ham club members. It is becoming more common for amateur radio license holders to also have their GMRS license. Most will be more than happy to help new people out. Our club put up a GMRS repeater for an extra means of communication along with using GMRS as a possible stepping stone for those interested in amateur radio. Congrats on the new 935G Plus, you will enjoy it. I will suggest using the actual Wouxun programing software that can be downloaded from Buy Two Way Radios for free. You will need a Windows computer to run the program, but it is easy to use.
