As the esteemed gentleman from the California Central Coast ( @WRUU653 ) pointed out: I never contradict myself. Had you been paying attention you should understand that GMRS Channel 16 is for OFF ROAD as proven by the mathematical formula (4 X 4 = 16), and the OP is asking about the official HIGHWAY channel.. A highway is a road, and off-road is not a highway. Do better next time.4 points -

The specific restrictions are not in parts A and E. I don’t know if they ever were. Because changes to regulations are subject to the NPRM process by law, a better way to link regulations to treaties is by reference, which is done in 95.309, the superior portion of part 95 that affects all of the subparts: § 95.309 Coordination procedures and other restrictions for operation in certain locations. The operator of a Personal Radio Service station may be required to coordinate operation in advance and/or may be subject to operating restrictions if the station is to be operated in certain locations, described in the following paragraphs in this section. (b) Near a U.S. border or in an area that is or may be subject to an international treaty or agreement. Treaties and agreements may be viewed or downloaded from the FCC Web site: http://www.fcc.gov/ib/sand/agree/. The link in the quote leads to a bunch of agreements. The treaty that initially set aside Line A is referred to loosely as the Above 30 MHz Agreement, but there have been amendments and other treaties since 1962. I never have been able to find something other than my license that specifically states I cannot use channel 19 above Line A, so I really don’t know where to go to verify it. If new licenses continue to include that wording then I will avoid using the channel.3 points -

It has been universally agreed to by some, and decreed by the Queen of all that is GMRS that channel 19 shall be the unofficial Official Road Channel for GMRS. So it is written, so shall it be done... Bear in mind that "some people" will vehemently disagree and argue to the death against this, but just remember that they are wrong.3 points -

They don't sell the ground-plate with the SW102 anymore because it doesn't do any good. With that meter (most meters) you will never get an accurate reading of an HT antenna even with the ground plate. I recommend not wasting your time and not trying to overthink it.2 points -

I just purchased a couple of 3D printed HT stands for my 935G+ radios. I normally have one sitting on an end table next to me. I don't know how many times I have reached for the radio and knocked it over some times landing on the floor. The stand fits perfectly and has a cutout on the back for the USB-C port. The stand holds the radio at a good angle and is very stable. When I pickup the radio the stand comes with it which is a positive for me. That way I'm not dropping the stand. I got them on Etsy from a shop called BlackLodgeCreative. I believe the owner of the shop is a member here. He has stand for a bunch of popular HTs and a couple other pieces of radio associated equipment. I am going to purchase a couple more for other radios soon. I am not associated with the Etsy shop owner in any way other than being a satisfied customer.1 point

Well as QOATIG will point out - or did, as have a few others on YooToob, the big money in enforcement is in Pirate Radio and Telephones. I'd think FM on the low bands is something they'd have to get complaints about before any action on their part. and that action would probably just be a "knock it off" kinda letter. I can't see them bothering. Based on that video with the FCC Enforcements folks at the chinese restaurant, I imagine their response would be, similar to what the one FCC engineer told a person in the audience who complained about 7.200 - "turn the big knob." Only done FM on 10, but yes my FT-450D could do it from do it from 1.8 - 54 MHz, but I've got too many other modes I'm using at the moment to delve into that much.1 point -

Again, not a bandwidth issue. Pt 97 says an angle modulated signal (fm or phase mod) cannot exceed a modulation index of 1. 1.8 khz at 3.85 Mhz has an MD of 1.465 according to the formula I've used in the past. Unless my slide rule is sticky? This is the reason for the amateur bands that FM is not very useable below 28 MHz. It can be done, but it takes a lot of fiddling with your gear to get that 1 or less MD. Spelled out way down in 47 CFR 97.307 (f) (1)1 point -

SteveShannon reacted to amaff for a topic
Are you sure it's not a linked repeater system? That seems like far and away the simplest answer here. What channel are you hearing them on? You could hear them on, say simplex Ch20, but if you were trying to talk back on that frequency, even with the correct PL, you won't reach them if you're not going through the repeater close to you.1 point -

coryb27 reacted to SteveShannon for a topic
The traditional use of the word “skip” applies to hf radio signals bouncing off the ionosphere. UHF doesn’t do that, but it does propagate long distances sometimes when there’s a temperature inversion which causes tropospheric propagation, also called tropospheric ducting.1 point -
The fact that there are so many new CB radios out now (some of them not cheap, either) leads me to believe there is a big CB market. Companies like President, and a lot of the cheaper CCR-type manufacturers, are coming out with all manner of new radios, including handhelds, thanks in part to the addition of FM. I don't think they would be putting that much R&D and production effort into CB radios if the market was fading. Someone's buying them.1 point

UV-82 BAOFENG UV-82 5Watt UHF/VHF Radio
kirk5056 reacted to SteveShannon for a topic
It’s not as simple as that. Some of the thirty GMRS frequencies listed in four different groups have specific limitations for power and bandwidth. The easiest way to ensure you comply is to purchase a radio that has been certified for GMRS. A better way to think of this is to understand that your license doesn’t license you to use specific frequencies, but rather to use certified GMRS radios. There are amateur radios that are not certified but allow you to transmit on GMRS frequencies. It’s highly unlikely you would be cited; almost nobody ever has been. I don’t know if the UV-82 is one. Personally I buy GMRS radios for GMRS. It’s just easier. And I buy amateur radios for amateur radio use. That way I don’t even need to think about it. If someone tells me to use channel 20, I know what exactly they mean. Repeater channels only need CTCSS or DCS tones added because they’re already programmed.1 point -
UV-82 BAOFENG UV-82 5Watt UHF/VHF Radio
kirk5056 reacted to OffRoaderX for a topic
It is important to point out that the rules posted by the esteemed Mr. @SteveShannon above, apply ONLY to FCCs part 95 Approved "GMRS" radios. Because the UV-82 is not an FCC Part-95 Approved GMRS radio and is instead a H.A.M. radio, EVEN IF you have a GMRS license, you are not permitted to by the FCCs to transmit on GMRS frequencies - and it is very likely that the UV-82 will not even allow you to transmit on those frequencies. Failure to follow these rules will, per many online experts, WILL result in a $10,000 fine OR up to 10 years in prison!1 point -

Let's take that assertion by assertion: "Almost all GMRS radios also support FRS frequencies..." That would be true if you said that GMRS and FRS share the same frequencies entirely, except that FRS radios can't transmit on the repeater input frequencies. All current GMRS handheld radios support all FRS frequencies. FRS and GMRS use all of the same frequencies except for repeaters. GMRS mobile can't transmit on 8-14. "Channels 8-14 on a typical 22 channel consumer radio are reserved exclusively for FRS" That's just incorrect. GMRS handheld radios may transmit on all 22 channels so long as they don't exceed 500mw on 8-14 and stay narrowband on 8-14, or 5w on 1-7. Only handheld GMRS may transmit on 8-14 (and FRS). No mobiles. But GMRS handhelds are fine. Look it up. I did. "These channels can be license-free, ..." No. If you are operating a handheld GMRS radio on any GMRS channel, any of the 22, including 8-14, you are supposed to be licensed. If you are operating an FRS radio on those channels, you don't need a license. "So if yes unlocked the radios will transmit establishing open communications and ensuring the operator has a established license and follows FCC rules. " I can't quite make sense of what you're saying there. But an unlocked amateur radio isn't supposed to be used for GMRS. I'm talking about what is authorized, not what is possible, and not what is enforced. There's really nobody enforcing the use of a handheld ham radio that's been unlocked for GMRS, so long as it's following power limit rules, and not being used to cause a lot of trouble. But according to the rules of the FCCs, you're not supposed to use an unlocked device for GMRS. This is clear in the FCC spec. In practice, those who use any radio for GMRS, stay conformant in terms of bandwidth, power levels, frequency centers, and the stipulation that 8-14 is for handheld, not mobile, nobody really seems to actually care enough to try to enforce whether the radio was unlocked or not.1 point

Most of the Baofeng radios have analog FM transmissions. Digital access codes can be used on analog radios. The type of modulation is different than digital DCS codes. Simply go to the DCS menu, select it, and then select the code.1 point -
They do use both digital and analog tones. So, yes, D026 will work on a Baofeng.1 point

Best gmrs handheld radio?
TrikeRadio reacted to koni13 for a topic
Almost all GMRS radios also support FRS frequencies, which can be used without a license. Channels 8-14 on a typical 22 channel consumer radio reserved exclusively for FRS. These channels can be used license-free, but are limited to a half watt of transmit power and will have limited range. The GMRS is available to an individual for short-distance two-way communications to facilitate the activities of licensees and their immediate family members. Each licensee manages a system consisting of one or more transmitting units (stations.) The rules for GMRS limit eligibility for new GMRS system licenses to individuals in order to make the service available to personal users. So if yes unlocked the radios will transmit establishing open communications and ensuring the operator has a established license and follows FCC rules.0 points
