  1. Use self fusing tape at each joint and the coax connection. It is also highly suggested to wrap the self fusing tape with a good electrical tape. The self fusing tape is not UV resistant. I'm just finishing up with a third radio in my 23 Wrangler Rubi 2 Dr. to complement my Motorola XTL5000 High Powered Remote Mount UHF radio and my Cobra 25 LTD Classic AM/FM CB Radio. My third radio is a Motorola XTL2500 Remote Mount 840 Channel VHF radio. I 'm going to use a Laird TE Connectivity B1442 Base Load Non-Groundplane antenna hanging on the driver's side at the cowl with a Rugged Radio mount. I have the radio installed and the electrical connected however, I am waiting on a Powerwerx Anderson Power Pole Distribution Block. I had to remove my CB, Garmin Navigation Systems from the existing distribution block in order to power the newly installed radio. Essentially, all I have left to do, is finished up on the antenna mount grounding system, running the NMO antenna mount cable, install the Mini UHF connector on the cable, and tune the antenna. I intend to do that tomorrow. I called it a day at 3PM Arizona time. I've been out in the garage since 8AM and it was 113 degrees. Then, I will need to program the radio.

  5. Well, he certainly called out NotARubicon on that. The parties over. Lets leave this to die. There are other options. But no one seems to want to go that route. Easiest is change frequencies and bring the nodes up on ham. Ham repeaters can be closed, as in if you don't have a valid GMRS license and were part of the GMRS linked groups, your not allowed on the new ham repeaters.

  6. Mediocre SWR, but met specs per manufacturer. The biggest problem was lack of performance compared to the lesser Tram 1486 antenna. I couldn't get into local repeaters that shouldn't have been a problem. The second one I just got is really performing better than I expected. It's meeting up to the performance claims we read about on this forum.

  7. Got mine from Chatt Radio out of TN and as far as I'm concerned it was a good experience. He had 14 in stock while others had none. Took about 1 week to get here and shipping was $15 because it is an oversized package. I thought they might have sent me the wrong antenna because of the packaging and I sent an email after 6pm and he got back to me within a few minutes. Turns out the packaging was from the manufacturer that way and modified because it was the "C" version of the 712EF. After sending the email I noticed the antenna itself was labeled as the "C" version as he has said and told me I would love that antenna. And I'm sure I will when I get it up in the air finally.

  8. I also have the Wouxun Q10H and really like it. Since the question was about GMRS radios its sister the Wouxun Q10G has both NOAA weather alerts and is rated IP-67.

  10. The RDM models seem to be the favorite at Walmart. When traveling do you use an external antenna? There is a dual band magnet mount specifiy for MURS and GMRS. https://dpdproductions.com/products/dual-band-gmrs-murs-mobile-antenna If you use a duplexer, some adapters and a couple of short jumper cables, you can have both a MURS and a GMRS radio connected to the above antenna at the same time. The duplexer will isolate the two radios so they won’t get damaged during transmission. https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/cma-cf-4160j

Thank you. I just had to feed my addiction. I won't have many freqs program except for the Part 90 Business Radio Service freqs I'm licensed for, and the MURS channels for receive only since I can't get radio powered down to 2 watts so I can listen in my travels. The CPS will only allow me to take it to 10 watts.

That is typically where I mount my full-body radios, too. The tricky part is the antenna. Many people make the mistake of using a 3/4 mount and the nylon washer is trash in days... maybe weeks. But if you install a UHF mount with a UHF to 3/4 adapter, you get an incredibly strong mount. From there, it's just a matter of grounding.

  16. Oh please show us where they said this . You are flat wrong. Here’s what the FCC says d) Individual licensee duties. The holder of an individual license: (1) Shall determine specifically which individuals, including family members, are allowed to operate (i.e., exercise operational control over) its GMRS station(s) (see paragraph (c) of this section); (2) May allow any person to use (i.e., benefit from the operation of) its GMRS repeater, or alternatively, may limit the use of its GMRS repeater to specific persons; (3) May disallow the use of its GMRS repeater by specific persons as may be necessary to carry out its responsibilities under this section.

    Linked Repeaters

What @SteveShannon said… I don’t know that I would go so far as to use the word threaten but the downside has been debated ad nauseam. But since you asked, for one it has been pointed out there are limited channels available for GMRS repeater use. How will you know that the frequency is clear in the other area across county? You won’t. Amateur radio has more frequencies and coordination to avoid these issues. I merely pointed out that a single linked repeater is the same issue but to a lesser degree as many linked repeaters. Ergo a slippery slope. Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with the decision about linked repeaters the issue and reasoning behind banning them is the same for two repeaters linked as it is for three or four or twenty. If a family member of mine moves across country I’ll probably get their phone number.

  21. 100% this. Unless you're having trouble getting through (and even then, the few extra watts maybe will / maybe won't make the difference), there's no need to have it on maximum chooch.

  24. I know this is an old thread, but just in case someone is still reading it: - there are a LOT of MURS radios out there now. Radioddity has a good one that goes for around $30 - as with any 2 watt vhf radio, any discussion of range is meaningless. The range of a MURS HT is somewhere between 1/10 of a mile and 10-12 miles. It all depends on a multitude of factors. But my personal experience is that the rubber ducky antennas are good for about 1-2 miles over water, up 3 miles with external mag mount antennas. - being able to use external mag mount antennas makes MURS far better than FRS when it comes to vehicle to vehicle communication. It is great for maintaining group comms when traveling in a “pack”.

And that will probably be the end of propane fired anything on those grounds. Insurance companies tend to react to anything like this and tell policy holders that they will not continue their policies if they allow whatever source of a loss was to continue to be used at a facility. While there are several different 'reasons' stated for the removal of corporal punishment in schools, a bit of research will show you that the insurance companies, after paying out on a couple schools being sued, they put a stop to it by refusing to insure any school that still used that method of punishment.

Okay, let's go there. If a family member moves across the country, what's the problem? How does that single link threaten anything? Where's the downside?
