A fixed-mount marine radio with a big antenna mounted on the top (third?) deck at max power (25W IIRC) transmits many farz when the only obstacle is the earth's curvature. Another good reference for those new to the subject: https://www.boatingworld.com/articles/boating/vhf-radio-your-ultimate-guide/2 points

Not all crimes are illegal. Everything is relative. It was only an analogy after all. I don’t understand why anyone would be remotely interested in using a repeater where the owner doesn’t want you. Nor would I want to use a repeater where I felt the owner had unreasonable rules. I’ve seen that too. I just wouldn’t care and I’d find an alternative. Well looks like I’m out of give a shits on this one. I have literally become bored with the subject. Who knew2 points

NEC says ground the Tower to common ground, the same ground your radio equipment is grounded to, your main electric panel ground. Some folks add a separate ground for the tower but NEC says to ground that to your common. BTW, your antenna is grounded to the tower via the mounting so no you dont need to ground to antenna2 points

Question: Paid Subscription Repeaters?
WRXB215 and one other reacted to SteveShannon for a topic
But why not just setup a repeater on one of the other pairs? Nothing is gained by intentionally running interference (and yes I appreciate that you said you wouldn’t.)2 points -
And if you did that you would be interfering with other transmissions. Along with just not being a good human. Do you go out of your way to cut off other people in traffic just because they do?2 points

Just because you can find a way to pick the lock and start a car that’s sitting on a public road it doesn’t give you the right to do so. Get your own car and drive the same road all you want, loan it out to neighbors and friends if you want. Feel free to pay for whatever fuel or power source it uses, parking fees and insurance and leave the keys in it with a sign that says free to use. You are not entitled to use someone else’s car without permission because it uses public roads. The GMRS repeater is owned by an individual. It’s his or hers to do with what they want. The FCC rules and common sense back this up. It doesn’t matter if it’s for their own family, or a family farm, or a radio club, or they just let it sit there unused, it’s not yours. Sure it’s nice when people make their repeater open for others to use but it’s a permission given not an entitlement. I find it amazing that this concept is so hard for some people to grasp.2 points

Let's talk antenna masts
AdmiralCochrane and one other reacted to WRYZ926 for a question
I would at least try to get the antenna up higher than the house if possible. Not everyone can get antennas higher than trees in the area. There are all kinds of options when it comes to antenna masts. A study flag pole will definitely work as will chainlink fence top rail or 1 5/8" fence posts with couplers. Satellite dish/J mounts also work well. Some j mounts are 1 5/8" diameter and can be extended using couplers and 1 5/8" fence posts. Just remember to properly secure any mast with wall clamps and guy wires/ropes, depending on installation, to keep them from falling. I made a mast from 1 5/8" fence posts for my Comet GP-9. I used j mounts for my Comet CA-712EFC and HF cobweb antenna. I used an eight foot piece of 1 5/8" fence post on the j mount to get the cobweb up a little and it is secured with guy ropes.2 points -

A quick update...the 3rd-party cable I had ordered nearly a month ago finally arrived about 30 minutes ago. It was listed as a cable for the AnyTone AT-5888UV & AT-778UV radios. I ordered it because the photo of the pinout on the RJ-45 jack looked the same as the Midland cable I had borrowed. And it works! I can read from and write to the radio. It was $11 on Amazon. Now I can fix my radio if it loses the split tones again. However, I will still be looking to replace this radio.2 points

Antenna grounding?
SteveShannon reacted to WRUE951 for a question
I wouldn't consider the NEC a 'bare minimum' but more so of a 'standard' Some manufactures of electrical equipment may 'suggest' additional steps or recommendations beyond the 'standard' but defiantly not required.. However some manufacture may require their recommendations for warranty purposes but i dont know if any manufactures that do.1 point -
The specified audio power on the 1000G+ is 3W, external or internal which is what the vast majority of radios out there have. Some do have 5W. So it should be as loud as the internal speakers at least. If it's not, try another speaker. I've no issues with my Wouxun "driving" external speakers, same loudness as the internal (seems louder to me actually). It's a 90's Cobra external speaker. But if your hearing is marginal it's always gonna sound not the best. There's options but all require another power source: Power(amplified) speaker: Needs external 12v source. Ex: https://www.wearecb.com/bc23as.html Audio jack to bluetooth: a small bluetooth device that plugs into the external speaker jack and pairs with your cars bluetooth. Requires power (most are just battery powered and have a USB port to charge but if you permanently plugged the USB port into a power source it's always powered). Pair this device with your bluetooth enabled car stereo, and your audio will come thru your vehicles speakers. Ex: Amazon listing Audio jack to FM Transmitter. A small FM transmitter that plugs into your external speaker jack. Requires power (most are just battery powered and have a USB port to charge but if you permanently plugged the USB port into a power source it's always powered). Tune your car stereo to the devices output station and your audio will come thru your vehicles speakers. Ex: amazon listing1 point

The Motorola guide is their recommendation but not a NEC requirement, however their guideline does meet NEC grounding specifications. To meet code, grounding requirements must meet the NEC1 point

Proper grounding can only be achieved by using 500MCM wire. Using anything less is totally and utterly foolish and breaks all safety and grounding requirements.1 point

Being in compliance with the law doesn't necessarily mean you are morally and ethically correct. Man's laws are often in direct contravention to what is right and just. To put it another way, we have a "legal" system, not a "justice" system.1 point

True it's not a crime. But it is unethical and possibly immoral. Folks doing things "just because they can" without regard to others rights and personal property just makes for unnecessary grief. And as mom would say "it's just plain rude". So ask yourself this question, were you raised that way?1 point

Let's talk antenna masts
Mrsig reacted to MarkInTampa for a question
I'm running a 30ft flag pole from Home Depot for a mast with a GP-6NC. For a bit more stability it's also anchored to the house. I ordered a telescoping flag pole but they sent me a sleeved sectional (6 5ft 2-1/4" sections) by mistake. Didn't send it back, figured it would be more solid than the telescoping version and by loosening the clamps on the house I can remove or add sections by myself so it wasn't a big deal. I thought I could get away with no guy wires but it seemed to sway a bit more than I would like at 30ft so added some. Dropped it to 10ft or so with the antenna attached and it made it through a direct hit from hurricane Milton.1 point -
My dad just took one of the paks into a Batteries Plus and they disassembled it, matched the three main cells with new equivalents, and re-soldered up the connectors on the new cells and re-shrinked wrapped them together and made 3 more for all their handsets on that system. I think they charged him like $11/pak.1 point

No one can do that. You can still use the frequency like you use the road. That’s why the FCC says to make sure you are not interfering with other transmissions.1 point

That’s correct. For UHF it’s several percent further than the visual horizon.1 point -
In my opinion, it really depends on your expectations. 15 feet gets you about 5.5 miles to the RF horizon. 35 feet will get you out to about 8.5 miles. 50 feet gets you about 10 miles.1 point

Introduction
WestMichiganGMRS reacted to WSBN926 for a topic
"Hey everyone! My name is Theron, and I’m in Greenville, MI. I have interest in GMRS and amateur radio, and I’m eager to learn more about the radio hobby. I’m excited to connect with experienced operators and newcomers alike. I'm towards the outer ranges of most of the repeaters ranges but the Wouxon KG1000G+ and (current temporary) short stub mobile magnetic mount is able to hit them most of the time. However, reports are that my signal is on the weak side at full power into the Moline repeater and others. I often simply listen to the Nets/Skywarn and general chatter in the evenings. I'll be upgrading my antenna (J-pole or Yaggi) and height at the home base to provide a clearer signal into the repeaters which will improve participation in the Nets / Skywarn. In addition to radio, I enjoy exploring the great outdoors, welding, and carpentry. I work in the large scale industrial bioprocessing industry as a research and development scientist and data analyst.1 point -

Midland MXT400 Programming Cable
PRadio reacted to OffRoaderX for a topic
Ignore anyone trying to talk you into spending more money IF your current radio does what you want... and if you decide that you have grown weary of the limitations on your current radio, you will never actually get a helpful answer from that particular rheet-hard - he only knows how to type negative things and never anything that is actually helpful. You may as well put him on your block-list like everyone else does.. that way you don't have to see his stupidity and overt-acts of utter social retardation until he makes a new account and starts over.. again.. with a different name.. So IF you have decided that you want a GMRS radio without all the limitations of your Midland, there are many manufacturers to choose from like Wouxun, BTech, Radioddity (and more) - but which one is "best" depends on what it is you are looking for/want/need, so let us know what is important to you/what you are looking for in a GMRS radio and we can make some suggestions ..1 point -
Every mag mount antenna and every NMO kit I've ever seen uses RG58. I'll bet all of you have at least one on one or more of your radios. RG58 is even more lossy than RG8X, so I'm mystified about why your installation is right and mine is wrong. If the dummy load isn't between your ears, tell me something I can use. Be Elmer, not Mr Magoo.1 point

i have a Harbor Freight Telescoping flag pole mounted on my 5th wheel trailer (rear ladder mounted) that i slide a home brew Copper J-Pole with 3D printed clamps. This set up is for a portable repeater when camping. Fully extended im getting about 20-25' and with no obstructions around me i get pretty decent coverage. It doesn't take much to hamper the signal, a few trees will kill the signal quality. You should see the same type results.1 point
-
this is geared to de-regulate the big TV/telecom/internet industry and will have zero impact on GMRS.. So to the folks that think this is their gate to 'heaven' to loosen the rains on GMRS,, think again, the FCC will not waste a second reading letters that we need Linking, etc..1 point
