  1. Everyone should just block him. He’s getting his jollies by being mentioned by many. Just completely ignore him. Don’t look at those hidden posts he makes. Make him as irrelevant to the forum as he is in life.

  2. I'm hoping someday, after reading everyone's comments expressing disgust at his rudeness and Lack of common sense that he may one day have a epiphany and realize that he's being an ASS, but then I'm sure that's asking too much, Oh well.

  3. What you did wrong was believing some clown on a GMRS radio that was claiming to be the local police.. TL;dr .. he lied to you..

  5. He did that already, a while back - he had his account deleted and asked the forum owner to delete all of his posts - my guess is because his callsign was showing and he realized that he was embarrassed to have people find out about who/what he really is.. where he works (if he even has a job).. where he lives (or where his parents house is, with him in the basement).. I think Sir Steven Shannon, H.E.R.D., et al, got it right.. the only attention he gets in life is here when he acts like an idiot, so the best thing to do is ignore him and stop talking about him (startinggggg... NOW)..

  6. Basically no one disputes that. But now we're down an absurd semantic rabbit hole. I don't know of anyone who seriously claims humans evolved independently in the Americas. That's not what anyone means by "Native Americans". But it's the argument you (or someone who has your ear...) are trying to have for...some reason?

  7. is that assclown even still here? I blocked him a month or so ago and this has been a much better place ever since... I highly recommend that everyone also hover their mouse over the his user-photo/avatar and click the IGNORE button.. and remember to recommend this action to everyone else when appropriate... Meaning each time he posts one of his socially rheet-harded posts.

  9. Negative Nancy is that weird 3rd cousin that everyone stays far away from at family reunions. Some complain about the price of the RT systems CPS but the cost is worth it for me. Especially now that they are starting to have more MAC versions available.

  10. I went with the RT Systems programming and solved all issues I was having with the Radioddity software. It's worth the few bucks extra. This is a good radio and only complaint is the display being hard to read in my Jeep. Just can't get the contrast right to see the display. This is mostly because of my eyes being past their prime. SoCal ... or whatever his name is a jackass.

  11. Guess what ?? 6 meters was open yesterday and Today !! I made 11 new contacts on usb , and 4 on fm @ 50 watts !

  12. I had to laugh..................... give these frequencies to the Hams? They will use them? Hams wont even use 6m unless the band opens up and sends their signal halfway across the country. I say, make a long range GMRS band. Regular citizens will put them to better use. I have sat here for quite awhile trying to find digital activity on 6m since voice is always dead. No repeaters, no simplex, nothing. I did manage to make one contact on FT8. The first and only contact since 1996. Since then, I haven't noticed even a fart of activity on 6m. So what makes anyone think Hams will make use of the 46/49 MHz band?

  13. The Cobra Trailblazer lineup is out, and soon-to-be-on-Amazon, and the Trailblazer 500 looks really exciting to me. A UI that can be pared down to just the couple of repeaters you care about / can reach, and it's based on their older business-focused FRS radios so accessories are already available, plus they sell the older PX650 upon which this is based at Wal-Mart, so I expect this to be the first repeater-capable handie you can buy at Wally World in a while…

Back To The Original Post With A Comment - I Personally Would Not Have An Interest In The Cobra Bubble Pack Unit, Due To The IP Rating & 2.5 Watt Output. The End.....

  16. A little family history. My great, great grandfather seventeen generations back on my mom's side was the Chief of the Zamboni tribe in Malawi. Does that mean anything to anybody? I don't think it should. Bottom line, we are all members of the human race and there's no need for all this pigeon holing and placing people in irrelevant boxes. Just my opinion.

  18. GMRS was envisioned as a service for use by the general public for personal use, particularly after the 2017 rule changes that eliminated new business licenses in the band. Since that main target for GMRS was general public use, assumed non technical users, the simpler the radio the better. Less crap for people to mess up, get frustrated, and quit using the radio. I would say if one is a knowledgeable user, then perhaps going with a quality commercial grade radio is a good move. Much more in the way of features and more customization options. All the radios I use for GMRS are mostly used mid to higher end commercial grade radios. Some are even digital enabled, used on the Ham bands in that mode since currently it's not legal for GMRS use.

  19. I agree for sure. Anything under 20m is very hard to get communications out of while mobile. 80m and 100% equal to QRP, for sure. 100w in for less than 2w out. If you are actually moving, that makes it even harder. I have seen some guys spend $2,500 or more for some of these high-power screwdriver antennas, but it's pointless unless they have a mobile 1,000w amp. Even then, the 1,000w to the antenna on 80m would be like 150w-180w to a proper vertical antenna (not even a dipole). That antenna would be hot enough to cook on. LOL

    Re: Newly Purchased ICOM FR4000

An alternative option would be to build a Allstar node with a RasberryPi, then connect the node to a URIxB, and then make the db25 to db25 cable to the FR4000. Make sure to push the remote button so that the green light is lit for the remote on the front of the FR4000. The node can be programmed however you want for CWID and time. This would also allow you to change to ham frequencies and link your repeater in the future if you decide to change over to ham from GMRS.

  21. Yuck!! That's even worse than my guess on 75/80. It would fair to say using those antennas would be equivalent to a QRP radio with a full sized dipole. The testing you did should be impressed on Hams operating mobile. Some spend a fortune on those antennas to operate on the HF low bands.

    Travel Tone??

I can remember that in the 1970s, most of the highway patrol and sheriff's department vehicles had CB capability, although I don't know if they were issued or private purchase. I'm sure they'd be a lot less useful today, since almost every vehicle has a cell phone and someone will call in the event of an emergency, so I'm not surprised that they stopped monitoring CB channels. I do have a CB in my truck, and sometimes I hear something useful, but not very often, TBH. As far as I can tell, most people using FRS/GMRS to convoy on the highway are using tones. There have been a couple of times when I heard people who were obviously a mile or so behind me and I tried to warn them about something I was seeing, but they couldn't hear me. It may be that in some parts of the country, the channels are so jammed that you really need a tone, but in Oklahoma and the surrounding states where I do most of my driving, conversation is pretty sparse, and most of the time I'm solo, so I run with no tone. Even if I can't talk to them, I can hear people warning one another of lane closures, etc. and that's useful.

  24. Maybe instead of thinking of this as a "One band can't do both those frequency ranges" *problem*, it should be looked at as a "maybe GMRS should have cross-band repeaters, and maybe they could be used to build networks of repeaters with "not public network" connections..." *opportunity*.

  26. That's great! It works for many people, just didn't work out for me. Oh well, that's life. Now at my age I don't think I really want to get married again anyway. Once you get use to the peace and quite, no more daily drama, that's hard to give up.

  27. I work, pay the bills and do thing around the house when needed to help the wife out as she is disabled and can't work. I also prepare as much as possible for any unforeseen man made or natural disaster when basis essentials could be in short supply. My wife has never once given me a grief about any of my hobbies. She doesn't participate in some of them, but she does enjoy the radios and listening to the locals talk about things going on in the area and on my SDR receivers here in the states and overseas.

    How many FARS??

Talk to Brent at Cerro Gordo. If you put a repeater on the ridge up there you should be able to make it down to Saline Valley and parts of DVNP and still have coverage to Mt. Whitney. There are 2 commercial antenna sites on either side of his property, but he actually owns the land all the way up to Cerro Gordo Peak (9163 ft).

  30. I guess you are the resident insulter and jackass when someone asks a question? I see your snide comments all over this forum. Your type should normally just sit and watch but it never happens 'cuz you just have to get your jollies. You just LOVE talking down at someone new to gmrs when a question is asked. I bought the RT Systems software [far superior to the free download CPS from Radiodity] and found out that the DB40-G manual is full of crap. Darn near everything is programmable. And YES, I got into ham radio from back when CB was 23 channels, there was a 5 and 5 rule, and the radios were crystal controlled (early 1960's). My first cb was a Heathkit GW-22 five channel crystal rig. I went in the navy and when I got out, an old cb buddy had gone ham so he gave me the novice test in 1972. That got my foot in the door of ham radio. I have held NOVICE, TECH, GENERAL, ADVANCED, and now EXTRA. I am still licensed and know morse code (Extra Class) 53 years later. I still have my old 23 channel Citifone SS mobile and base rigs (gathering dust in the closet). I just got interested in GMRS because our local Skywarn group started using GMRS as an alternate method to check in to the weather watch nets along with 2m/70cm. PS: I doubt any of this will put a civil tongue in you but one can hope. PPS: Radiodity does supply a "driver" for their CPS but it made no difference. I now have my radio programmed for several local repeaters. PPPS: I bought a nanoVNA so I could build my gmrs j-pole antenna and get it tuned without a lot of rigamarole. I didn't have to put up with your type while building it either.

  31. @WSHW974 please ignore the snide comments from this forum’s resident ass hat. You can certainly program tones in these first 30 channels. What they are referring to is that GMRS is a channel based service and so the frequencies are assigned to the channels and baked in. The first 22 are simplex and the next eight are for repeaters with the same receive frequencies as 15-22 and the transmit having a pre programmed + 5. (462.xxx Rx and 467.xxx Tx) No need to set the offset as it is also baked in. You can set tones for repeaters as well. Hope this helps.

That actually makes a lot of sense for those situations. We had something similar to that here in some localities, but with waste management. The counties that take a high volume of commercial waste have installed CB Base stations at the office and mobiles on some of the rigs on the landfill so they can talk to the commercial drivers and provide directions as they approach and move around the landfill. Those facilities that I am aware of did it on their own (per location) without getting the county government involved. It was just local managers that implemented it.

    Re: Newly Purchased ICOM FR4000

The Bridgecom repeaters do not transmit the CW ID using tones at all. So the only way one will hear the ID is if they have their RX tones turned off. But there is quite a bit of traffic on simplex that none of us want to hear so we all use RX tones. The Arcom RC-210 will take care of that and allow us to transmit the ID with tones enabled. Plus it allows us to do so much more than just run the ID.

  36. As a Native American, I will tell Dumb Trump that he can kiss my rear end. Nothing he says will stop me from using my native language. That would be the day. Plus, one must read before one posts, because that executive order has a loop hole designed right in it. It states: “nothing in this order, however, requires or directs any change in the services provided by any agency. Agency heads should make decisions as they deem necessary to fulfill their respective agencies’ mission and efficiently provide Government services to the American people. Agency heads are not required to amend, remove, or otherwise stop production of documents, products, or other services prepared or offered in languages other than English.”

  37. I'm looking for an antenna that is pretty much waterproof as it will be submerged at times. Possibly a Laird Phantom antenna will work? The surface area and curvature of the roof should give ample ground plane and have an optimal takeoff angle. It will need to withstand impacts from underwater obstacles. When on land, grounding shouldn't be an issue as there will be four grounding points, plus one auxiliary ground.

    GMRS security risk.

Community Note / Readers Added Context: To identify someone based on their callsign takes 10 seconds and can be done by anyone in the world with access to the internet. To identify someone based on their license plate number in most states takes a lot of work/knowing the right people/filling out the right forms/paying a lot of monies, IF it is even legal to do so in your state.

  39. My parents are both in their 70's. They dont go on jeep events but wanted a radio to talk on my repeaters. The Midland is perfect for that. Why would I buy a crazy complicated CCR to put in there vehicels that they would totally baffled about. I mean I still can't get my father to swtich from his flip phone and holy crap when someone sends him a text and the "darn thing beeps at me". You also dont realize the amount of farmers that use midland. I've installed a dozen repeaters (LMR) for farms that are using Midlands in all the tractors and equipment on the farm. They are simple and last. If your using GMRS as HAM lite then your right there are better choices. But for simple communications they serve a purpose and will sell more than all the other vendors combined this year and next year.
