  1. @WSBU687 try Texas GMRS.net. There are repeaters listed there that are in your area that usually have traffic.
  2. That is already being done. Different frequencies, different tones, linked. I talk on two of the repeaters almost every day. I've gotten to where I know right where I need to switch from one to the other.
  3. Your list looks pretty impressive to me.
  4. Double check the impedance. It's my understanding they are different. Also, I think there are devices you can get to fix that problem.
  5. I'm glad that's not the case in my area. So far, I've only encountered one ham that was a jerk. He was on a ham repeater ranting about GMRS and NO other ham agreed with him. We all defended GMRS and basically told him to shut up. I never could get his call sign but I think, by his voice and his rant, that he was the same guy I heard several months ago on a GMRS repeater ranting about something. I think it's more about the individual than the radio service they are using.
  6. If you mean, it doesn't transmit, I suppose I wasn't clear. Some radios only give you 8 repeater channels that will transmit. The rest of them can listen but not transmit. I think they do this because they do not understand the regulations for GMRS radios. If you mean, it doesn't receive, you need to send the radio back and ask for a new one that works or get your money back. It should at least receive on those other channels.
  7. I do not have that specific radio but I know that some GMRS radios have the firmware programmed correct and some don't. The firmware should only prevent you from transmitting on non-GMRS frequencies. Some manufacturers mistakenly think you can only have 8 repeater channels that you can transmit on and only monitor after that. It sounds like the UV-9G may be one of those radios.
  8. On the repeaters I use, very little if any. Apparently in some areas there is a big difference but I'm not sure why. There are still a lot of repeaters in my area(Houston) that I have not used yet. Maybe some of them will tell a different story.
  9. Been thinking about putting another radio in the truck, maybe just one of my HTs but I keep putting it off thinking there is not a good solution. Those Lido mounts have changed my mind.
  10. I'm glad you aren't a Sad Ham. It's nice to get strait answers. Did the first one this morning. Now to find a crayon.
  11. Bad engineering. This radio used to be on my list for a possible future purchase. Not any more after all the complaints I keep seeing. Thanks for the info. Sorry you have had to go through so much with it.
  12. I'm not sure how this statement fits into a discussion about repeaters. Not having access to a repeater does not stop you from using your radio. It only prevents you from using equipment that belongs to someone else.
  13. Yes. "No MURS transmitter shall, under any condition of modulation, transmit more than 2 watts transmitter power output." Some frequencies are tighter than that: 151.820 MHz (11.25 kHz) 151.880 MHz (11.25 kHz) 151.940 MHz (11.25 kHz) 154.570 MHz (20.00 kHz) 154.600 MHz (20.00 kHz)
  14. @WRUZ229 Very interesting, let us know how that works out for you.
  15. It's a good sign that your laptop recognized it but did you select the right COM port in the software?
  16. @WSCD623 Welcome to GMRS and particularly, myGMRS.com. I like to refer to GMRS as the "Great" Mobile Radio Service. Lots of good people on the air and in this forum.
  17. Hubs are used to link multiple repeater groups together. Yes, while use linked repeaters, if you transmit on repeater A it will be heard on repeater B even though repeater B is on a different frequency and vice versa.
  18. That's what I did. I'm using a Nagoya UT-72. It's inexpensive and works well.
  19. In chirp, select the Radioddity UV-5G.
  20. @WSCD723 Welcome to GMRS. I'll second what @WRUU653 said about HamStudy. That is what I used and I was able to pass the tech and general in one session. I like that explanations they give, it's better than just memorizing answers.
  21. Finally got a chance to watch. That was hilarious!
  22. Haven't watched the video yet but that guy in the picture looks like a guy I work with.
  23. On Friday, I received my order of: Baofeng GM-15 Pro Extra batteries Solar panels The radios seem to be working well so far. Still more testing to do here. Have only tried a short test with the stock antennas but sound quality was good. Friday evening, using the wall charger, I charged the batteries that came with the radios. I didn't time how long it took but wish I had. It seemed to take longer than I thought it would. Saturday at 10:00am I set the extra batteries outside on a table with the solar panels. The day started off partly cloudy. I was busy but checked them when I could. There were times of bright sunlight when the charge lite was red and times with clouds when there was no light at all. I thought this test was going to be a complete failure especially since it gradually became more cloudy/overcast. At 3:00pm I gave up and brought everything inside and decided to put the extra batteries on the wall chargers to go ahead and charge them up. To my surprise they were completely charged. Next step is to run the batteries completely down and try the solar panels again. I hope it will be a sunny day when I do that. But charging without complete sunshine is a more "real world" test. I will give an update in a week or so after I have more info to share. Special thanks to @Lscott, @Sshannon, and @WRXP381 for their input on solar panels. P.S. Someday I plan on getting the stuff I need to charge a UV-5R with solar.
  24. @rdunajewski would have to do this.
  25. You would be able to use the radio legally on the frequencies it is made for.
