If you have not yet decided, the (new) Wouxun 905G is my new favorite.  Water resistant (near waterproof) and double the battery.. Same simple interface as the 805G .. I have both, but the 905G is what i now use the most.

Aha. You’re the guy I blame for spending $320 on an “Ocean” radio instead of just being satisfied with my Baofeng BF-F8HP HT and a mag mount antenna. . Seriously your GMRS vids are great.

He worked at several places in the states and around the world, but most of the time he was at Plum Brook research facility west of Cleveland. If you have ever seen the movie Armageddon, the scene where they are in a giant vacuum chamber and the female astronaut asks Bear what would happen if she kicked him in the balls, that's the world's largest vacuum chamber and it's located at Plum Brook. My kids have a tent on their bed made from cloth used in some sort of rocket humidity test that was inside that chamber.

After posting to someone else's thread and realizing I hijacked his thread about scanning, I figured I'd start a new thread with cool "tips and tricks" that people have discovered with their new KG-1000G radios.   Perhaps we can also use this thread as a "does anyone know how to..." for the KG-1000G.  It will also be an interesting read for anyone considering this radio, since it will hopefully eventually contain a lot of detailed info about how specific features are implemented.

I'll start with this one (cross-posted from the other thread - if someone can tell me how do delete that other post, I will be glad to do so!):

Quickly adding a "privacy tone" that others are using on blister pack radios
My Jeep and I were in a parade over the weekend for a couple of WWII vets that were celebrating birthdays (97 and 100!).  The organizers were on GMRS/FRS HTs and I asked what channel they were on.  "Channel 7 with privacy channel 35" he told me.  Not knowing which brand radios they were using nor remembering off the top of my head which frequency corresponds to "privacy code 35" on most radios, I was able to use the Menu [41] "SC-CTC" option (which I've programmed to Key C) to "grab" their PL frequency and then save it to my radio on channel 7 within about 30 seconds.  Super handy if you're needing to inter-operate with people on Motorola, Midland, or Cobra radios and using "privacy channels".  Note: If you want to be able to RX and Tx with the tone, you need to also change the default setting for Menu [40] "SC-QT" from DECODER to ALL.    Pretty neat feature that saved me the stress of having to manually look up possible tones and then program them via FPP while the parade was starting...

Neither. The set screws should pierce the paint and get ground on the hood.

Just got mine, just started testing and so far it looks like its going to be a great radio for the price. I live in Galax, Va, and on low power hit the Stone Mountain, NC repeater with a great signal report that is 31 miles away indoor with stock antenna, very nice. so more to come

brasda91 reacted to MacJack in Any simple GMRS two-way handhelds that have more than 2W of power?
drabina, let me weight in... I'm a newbie and my first two HT was the 805G with reviews I read from mbrun and others, it is the great radio... BUT then I got a data cable and use CHIRP on my Mac and the world of making life easier to setup radio was so helpful.  I added several personal channels on the end of the radio channel list as well as for several repeaters and channel our family uses to most to be able to use with older FRS Cobras etc around the house or campground with the kids and G kids.

So that was back in Nov/Dec and reading this forum, asking questions in post as well as PM to my mentors and coaches.  Well I got a KG-905G from BTWR https://www.buytwowayradios.com/wouxun-kg-905g.html with a 15.5 antenna and it great distance... I'm still formulating and writing a reviews.  So far the feature I like the most is it is more beefer, great battery life, more water resistant as I have a Jeep top off from Spring-Summer-Fall.  But the best feature is channel scanning by groups... I have made up so many groups like my repeater group with favorite channels, FRS channels, Just GMRS repeater channels to hear or monitor the repeaters that I do not have the PL code.

So what I'm saying is I was like you, KISS at first but after getting involved in GMRS and where I'm at now, I would purchased a KG-905G over the 805G... no regrets as the 805G works for the family, light weight and easy to use but for me where I'm at the 905G is the answers.  My cost justification is I can still use my 6 FRS with the G Kids without a license and teaching them to do radio correctly.

Have fun, you will get what is best for you and family, so let us know what you pick and why.  O I should say since I'm a fellow newbie I offer help to you, just PM me and will help if you pick and get the data cable with software or other accessories...  (This offer goes out to all newbie with a 805G or 905G as well.)  I found the secret sauce which will make sense and you will be up and running quickly.

I agree, I had issue with my 805G and they offered to exchange it and I said wait let me restore from factory backup first... That fixed it, so called back and told them all is well.

They where ready to stand behide products they sell.  That why I keep coming back.

I'll issue a pre-emptive welcome to GMRS. It's a great community, especially here. Hopefully you'll get your license soon. I have a 27-foot Forest River Wildwood and always use my handheld GMRS units for several reasons when camping, but not for the reasons you stated (or at least I haven't done so yet). My wife lets me know I'm screwing up when backing into a site with the radio. A few feet makes a huge difference as you know and by the time I hear her shouting or she dials a phone a tree could be in the trailer living room. I also take a lot of photos in some remote regions after nightfall and before dawn. A two-way is the ideal solution if an emergency arises, assuming I haven't ventured too far. When we caravan with the son-in-law radio beats even bluetoothed phones in the trucks because it's faster if you need to alert the person behind or in front of you. There's something of an official GMRS channel for roadside emergencies, I think Ch. 20, but I'm confident someone here will clarify or confirm. I also contact owners of repeaters near where we are camping to secure permission to use their repeater in an emergency. As you know, cell phone service stinks at some campsites, but if someone has a repeater on a mountain nearby you can punch a signal out to summon help. That's critical in my case because my daughter is a quadriplegic and the first trip with our trailer the state park locked the gate at 8 p.m. and there was no cell service. We were instructed to drive to the check in station in an emergency and use an outside landline to call 911 in an emergency....when sometimes it's not prudent to abandon the victim, even temporarily.

I think your idea is great, though and I'd sure be game to help start a trend (although I have my doubts with Smartphone addiction today). The traffic/weather report idea, though, is sort of like truckers with CBs. There's some propagation differences that shorten most transmissions, but there's also none of the trash talking on GMRS...well, exponentially less anyway.

So have you posed your question on any RV/trailer groups? If not I'll post it on the Forest River groups I belong to. Not sure if the admins will delete it, but I'm sure interested.

That may be a very good thing.

Let’s us all be good stewards of the GMRS service by our example so it does not run away from us and turn into trash like CB did in so many places.

The NA-771 is tuned to the amateur frequencies, not GMRS, that's why the SWR was so high
    440-450 MHz compared to 462-467 MHz, that's a 20+ MHz difference

The stock antennas are usually very broad-banded & inefficient

    I just looked at mine & it's labeled 136-174/400-520
That's probably the antenna from the UV-82 radios

The least expensive quarter-wave for GMRS [that I know of] is a Nagoya NA-701C,
which is tuned to the VHF/UHF commercial frequencies [so it would also cover MURS on VHF]
and is way closer to GMRS

It's sold in the mygmrs.com store for $14.99
    https://shop.mygmrs.com/collections/antennas/products/nagoya-na-701c-antenna

You spent $7.79 & some time to get an antenna that will perform on the GMRS frequencies
I'd say that you broke even
