WRDB702 reacted to Sshannon in FCC License Name Correction
    From the FCC FAQ page:
Can I change the licensee name by filing a request to update administrative information on a license?
Yes, but only if the name change does not involve a change in ownership of the license or licensee. Otherwise, a transfer of control or license assignment application needs to be filed. Additional information about these types of filings is available at the Transactions Topic page.

WRDB702 reacted to WRAM370 in DMR on GMRS
From my experience as a not-very-interested amateur radio license holder, I observed an interesting phenomenon occur on the local ham radio scene, as digital modes such as C4FM (Yaesu System Fusion) and DMR began to appear.
It absolutely killed the local ham radio scene.
People either embraced the technology, or hated it, and in that process, people got angry with those who disagreed with them (think modern day politics in America).
As such, there is little-to-no amateur radio activity on repeaters anymore, and amateur radio as we knew it, has got both feet firmly in the grave…in this neck of the woods. Dozens of repeaters go unused.
Those who embraced the digital voice modes (or “the dark side” as many called it), started out on talkgroups with fairly large gatherings of hams. Over time, they would get the azz of one another, and break off into other talkgroups of smaller, more intimate groups (another way of saying, only those who can tolerate each other), because they realized they could just keep creating new talkgroups. Now there are hundreds, if not thousands, of talkgroups, where two or three hams talk, where they used to talk to large groups on their local analog repeater. Excellent use of bandwidth.
It is interesting to see the discussion of DMR, or perhaps some other form of modulation, on GMRS, with it’s limited bandwidth, and no requirement to understand anything at all about radios. When asked to share spectrum space with analog and digital users, I can only imagine what will happen.
My worthless and unsolicited opinion is…if you want to play with a DMR radio, get yourself over to amateur radio. All sorts of people struggling there with code plugs, color codes, time slots, etc. And these are people who have “passed” a test to demonstrate proficiency in radio operation.
I think there is too much effort being placed in trying to turn GMRS into amateur radio. People want internet linking, wide coverage repeaters, nets, vanity call signs, ARES/RACES affiliations, digital voice modes. It all exists over on ham radio.

Subject to topography, you should be well within the range of the Johnstown repeaters.

    Very good point.

Pressing the ‘Menu’ button operates as the ‘Enter’ function when navigating the function menus on Wouxun radios. If one gets in the habit of only pressing ‘Menu’ only when intending to make a change and ‘Exit’ in all other cases the problem of upsetting the codes can be eliminated.

One thing I think many would like is an ignore feature where posts from ignored users would not show. The ability to edit your personal ignore list would be required so names could be taken off the list as well as being added.

That's not what I've heard from repeater owners.   i believe you are way under estimating the cost. (Of course, a repeater owner could tell you better than I. )

There are some nets I enjoy, and some I do not.  I did however, recently find a redeeming element to even the most annoying of nets.  The constant traffic was very helpful in finding the best location on my roof to place the antenna.  ?

The closest repeater listed on MyGMRS.com is Coffe675, but it's a bit far from you.
You might try searching other directories like repeater book as well.
Without access to a repeater you can still get good use out of your GMRS radio of you talk friends and family into using GMRS as well.  It is great for outings, hiking, camping, amusement parks, road trips, etc.. (terrain dependent).
Have you installed the MyGMRS app on your phone yet? It is very helpful in finding repeaters while traveling.

If you change your address it will appear as an administrative update and the original address is still viewable. It just won't show up on the FCC's first screen or MyGMRS.
If you are truly concerned about your address bring associated with your ID, maybe a new ID with a PO or mail service address is in order? Not sure about the process or rules for a new ID, though.  It might be a simple solution (other than contacts learning a new ID).

Well, I could swear that's how it used to work, but I just tried that and it doesn't work that way anymore.  The FCC CORES system is quite possibly the worst system to navigate I have every seen.
    I apologize, BoxCar.
But, what you can do is save your FRN and password as your login and password for the License Manager site: https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsEntry/licManager/login.jsp
From there, you see a list of your licenses.

That works, but you really don’t need to search for it.  Just log into CORES and you see all the licenses for your FRN.

WRDB702 reacted to BoxCar in Wattage limit via cigarette lighter plug?
And that's where the NEC and Ampacity tables have their largest differences. In radio work, at least with the radios we are dealing with on this site, wire lengths don't come into play so there is no regard to the internal resistance of the conductor and any losses that result from length. I believe the NEC formulas are set to keep the insulation temperature below 60C where the ampacity tables allow temps up to 130C. The most common PVC coating will withstand a temp of 160C while silicon will allow a temp of 600F which can light paper. Additionally, we are normally dealing with amp draws of 16 - 18A max as the radios are limited to 50W. 100W amateur radios will draw 28A which can be run on 14Ga wire, but I build all my harnesses with 12Ga silicon.

CHIRP will be updated overnight and tomorrow's build will have the patch included, so loading the patch manually won't be necessary.

    Update:
I purchased a heavy duty cigarette lighter plug (20amp) and have it plugged into a 15amp fused circuit in the van.  I also have 15amp inline fuses between the plug and the radio.
I have had the radio in the van for a week now with no problems.  The radio is working well on low (5w), med (20w), and even on high (50w) without blowing any fuses.
I will keep an eye on the connections and wiring, but I'm pretty happy with the results at the moment.
Thank you to all who provided suggestions.

I'm running a Retevis RA25 "20 watt" (not quite) at full power through a DC inverter at home, rated at 12V/10A.  The radio is showing 12.5V. I imagine you would be okay running your radio to the cigarette lighter, but like it was said, watch the amp draw?
