Gentlemen, Uncle Yoda is correct in the definition and use of a fixed station. Fixed stations only communicate to other fixed stations. Fixed stations DO NOT communicate to other mobile, handheld or base stations. The most common examples of fixed stations are SCADA stations used to monitor events and microwave sites. Microwave sites and SCADA stations only talk to another station of the same type, SCADA to SCADA and microwave to microwave. Base stations, operating from a "fixed" locations, communicate with other base stations, portable units and mobile units. A repeater site, even though it is in a stationary location is not a fixed station because of how it is used. It fits the definition of a base station as it passes communications between other base stations, mobiles and portables. Fixed stations use highly directional antennas such as a Yagi or parabolic dish pointed at the ONE station set to receive their transmissions.
So, the radio in your house or the repeater you use, even though their locations are fixed - as in stationary - they are not fixed stations.

You need to go into the channel and make sure you have the scan check box checked. Then when you scan it will only scan the channel’s you have check marked.

Like anything, it's a mixed bag. The folks I've talked to on the local GMRS repeaters have all been pleasant. I got my ham license not long ago and discovered a good community there too locally. Many of the local GMRS users and the repeater owners also have ham licenses and I found out I work with quite a few hams as well. As for MURS, I don't think there is as much a community around it, but I found that it is useful for outdoor simplex comms in the woods away from town where you won't find the band busy with business users.
However, in the next town over there's a group running a bunch of linked repeaters on GMRS requiring paid membership and the impression I get from the outside is that they would put the sad hams to shame.

GMRS on linked repeaters sometimes starts to sound like ham.
GMRS does have the offroad crowd adding to its overall popularity and the corresponding equipment demand, which is probably a good thing.  And Midland may not be everyone's favorite but at least they're bringing people in, and their everything-in-the-mike units sure are nice for many vehicles, although I wish they also had named channels and such.

Since this discussion is continuing, I will repeat myself from the previous discussion on hams using GMRS.
I think it demonstrates that the amateur radio service is not providing the “service” it should be, to the community at large, in 2023. Many ham radio test questions are out of date or antiquated. They have no real purpose to the users who are entering ham radio, and these questions and tests only serve as a barrier. Some will say they want that barrier to exist, to keep out the unwanted, just as they did with the morse code requirement. To those hams, I say ‘get over it’. The days of most hams being aerospace engineers and having pocket protectors are long gone. Like it or not, we live in the here and now, and it is a “new normal”. It may not be better, but it is new.
I thought there was a proposal in recent years to offer an entry level test of 5 questions, to give privileges on 70cm. That would be a step in the right direction for ham radio. What happened to that??? That is exactly what needs to be offered for entry level hams who only want to use an HT or mobile FM radio, with privileges only on 70cm FM frequencies. Give them privileges on 2m FM as well !
And in all reality, why do we even need test questions for those privileges, when it is basically the same as GMRS ? What do you need to know? You have a requirement to ID every so often, and you have to stay on these particular frequencies, and you would be limited to 50 watts TPO. No need to see if the applicant can recognize a resistor or a diode on a schematic. Who can do that today, with SMD components in everything? -/\/\/\/- is futile

Absolutely. It's a tough sell to get people to understand that for as many similarities there are between GMRS and ham radio, (push the button and talk, your voice comes out of someone else's radio), GMRS and ham are completely different in a lot of ways in terms of their intended uses and user base. It's more likely you'll hear someone on GMRS say real quick their Jeep is stuck again, but on ham you'll hear a 75 year old giving you 15 minutes about how his gout is flaring up for the fourth time this week.

Nope. Sorry Im not a fan of nets. They should be on Ham radio in my opinion. A national net just ties up repeaters when no one is listening to them.

Repeaters IDing. There are apps that will decode it, but the one I've used isn't very good at it (HT).

Just get a sat unit and don't rely on the GMRS radio. A Garmin Inreach Mini will cost about $20 for the safety plan and allow you to send a text or message home to let folks know your ok. Simple and cheap solution that will work on the entire AT. In the end the cost of the GMRS radios, paid repeater access will cost just as much

I can't speak to this location or repeater but they have membership info here https://nggmrs.org. Are you hiking together? What kind of distance will you have between you?  You may want to also carry something like an InReach Mini 2  for such a trip.

Just remember, that as predicted in the proclamation video, "some people" will always and forever spew reasons why Ch19 (any channel, actually) is not "the right choice", and will argue about it as they have for years, accomplishing nothing.. Those people are not invited to join with the rest of us normal people on Ch19..  They can go talk to themselves on some other channel..

The almighty and great Queen Randy(Notarubicon) has officially designated, in the absence of leadership, that GMRS channel 19 should be the "official" channel for traveling ie.( highway use) for those who are operating GMRS radios.  I agree with him if we start the movement it will be the standard just like channel 19 was in the day of the CB riggers.
Only those with a GMRS license are "authorized" to key the PTT on the radio however.  All fun aside this is a great idea and should be unofficially adopted just like channel 19 was for the CB radio guys.  What say you?
